My abiding memory of him is that Cup match away at Palace. Second half, Palace corner, ball headed out picked up by JD on the edge of a crowded penalty area, couple of steps and a glorious pass upfield into tthe path of a mega motoring Greg Blundell. run, tap, swerve, bang! Brilliant goal. And they were top division, with Andrew Johnson, at the time I think while we were 4th division wannabees.

From a header out of defence to the ball in the Palace net - I don't know the real answer, but it surely can't have been more than 12 or 13 seconds. In fact, thinking about it now, I really cannot remember any other counter attacking goal by the Rovers with that same pace and directness. Stevie Lister got one at York years ago that was a good one - but that was a pitch length run and dribble that took a lot longer. I can't think of any others that were notable.

Ah. I should have been more clear. Goals wot I have seen. Yes. Brentofrd away wasn't a bad one.... :) Probably the most exciting one ever to tell the truth - but I wasn't there to see it in the flesh.

Not the same John Doolan sadly. What a player the big man was when not injured.

When he played well, we played well, size doesn't always matter :)

Not the one I'm thinking of IDM. It was an evening match that we won 3-0. Definitely at their place. My Dad took me there. I think it was one of the Billy Bremner promotion seasons. There was quite a big crowd there.

Talking of John Doolan brings me back to the debate about Keegan. Yes, Keegan does what it says on the tin but you wish we didn't need his type of player who's a spoiler. Give me a John Doolan any day of the week. Could anchor the midfield, mix it as well as add value by being progressive with his passing and shooting.

October 1979 Bob, it was 3-1 and it came on the back of a 3-0 win at Stockport County 4 days earlier.

Oh cool! Beilliant Surrey. Thank you. Funny how you (well, me) always forget the goals the other lot score!

Feels like it was only a couple of seasons ago.... 35 years! Where the hell did that go?
