Tommy Wright (not that one)
« on June 07, 2018, 02:22:27 pm by Herman Hessian »
here's an outlier - how about Tommy Wright at St Johnstone ?

has kept them competitive for five years against the second tier SPL clubs (Hearts, Hibs, Aberdeen etc), won trophies, even taken them in to Europe

international player, SPL manager of the season, decent bloke - and rovers have never had a problem with taking irishmen on board

lack of EFL experience might mitigate against him, but that didn't do Derek Adams any harm at Plymouth !

I'd have thought that he'd be looking for a bigger club than us to warrant a move, but he might be open to "getting his feet under the table" in the English game before pitching for something more ambitious - would be good to get someone in who has a real motivation to make a case for their own abilities, rather than just jumping on the bandwagon of recycling one of the same old names from the lower league treadmill; no reason to suspect he'd but up for a move - but the question was posed by an StJFC fan as to why he was never considered for jobs south of the border, so thought I'd chuck his name in to the mix - thoughts ???

Genuine question - I've not seen the job spec.

Which ones does he not have?

if Rovers board discount folk who have won senior trophies, plaudits in top-level domestic leagues and participated in European football - and played internationally - simply because they don't know the ins and outs of Bury, Fleetwood, Grimsby and the like, then the club are beyond help - as I say - see Derek Adams; the recruitment (or retention) of an informed, capable assistant manager would render that completely moot...

Which ones does he not have?

"A working knowledge of the EFL or its equivalent "

Not sure you would call Scottish 2nd tier an equivalent?

Noticeable that there is no mention of championship football or aims in the job description.

I don't disagree. Why we can't just go and approach someone who might fit the bill I don't understand.............................or maybe I do.

what I meant was that he was competing against the second rank clubs, rather than Celtic who are obviously in a league of their own, not that he'd managed in the second division:

Quote
After Wright led the club to a top-six position in the Premiership, he guided them to their first Scottish Cup Final after a 2–1 win over Aberdeen. They were victorious in the May 17 Final meeting with Dundee United at Celtic Park. It was St Johnstone's first major trophy win.[ Wright signed a new contract with St Johnstone in August 2014. He signed another contract with St Johnstone in October 2015, soon after the club had rejected an approach from Dundee United for Wright.

He was voted Premiership Manager of the Season for the 2015–16 season, leading St Johnstone to another fourth-place finish and a third domestic cup semi-final, losing out to Hibernian.

St Johnstone secured a third successive fourth-place finish in the Premiership in 2016–17 under Tommy Wright, with two games remaining, also qualifying for Europe again.

St Johnstone were in the Scottish 1st tier. He's EASILY qualified as per the job description.

Of course he does, Cantley is being obtuse as usual.

He’s managed at St . Johnstone in the 1st tier of Scottish Football, been in the Europa Cup as well. His win rate in that time is nearly 41%. He must fit the criteria required.
Note his win rate is just about 4% more than DFs with us. In what is believed to be an higher league.
Whether he’s applied or will come we will wait and see.

If anyone else mentions win rate as meaning anything outside of huge amounts of context (thus rendering it meaningless), I will scweam and scweam!  :suicide:
