Title: Fish in the pool we are in
Post by: selby on August 11, 2019, 09:06:18 pm
The subject of budgets, and getting to come to us has rolled on for quite a while, so i thought every team we play ( most anyway) are surely no better off at attracting players to their club than ourselves.
So I thought it would be interesting to pick a player who impresses you/ us every week from the opposition, and could be realistically in our price range. I hope others will join in and pick a player it could be  an
interesting list by the end of the season.
My pick at Rochdale is M.J. Williams   played No 8 a tall spindly player with lots of vision.
For those who were not at the game he played  just in front of the back four similar to the Whiteman roll, but not as adventurous, although Rochdale played through him on most occasions from the back and he  had a good range of passing.
He was released by Liverpool at the end of last season (probably played with Herbie) and starting his second game with Rochdale.
Also interestingly can play central defender

Good shout, looked a real standout player. I thought the lad up front Pyke has something also

A product of the Huddersfield academy 21 years old ELF. and in a good place to learn from Henderson, there are some great players who don't cost the earth. It will be interesting to follow their season, and how they fare.
Thanks for being interested. We could have an interesting list by the end of the season.

I Tweeted that about Williams at half time yesterday. Sign him for £300k and then sell Whiteman for £3m. Job done. You always have to be looking for the next cab off the rank at our level.

I bet Darren Moore looks forward to you scouting reports and what he should do next .

I like your positivity , but you can't judge or put a price on a player because he played well for 45 mins in the 1 game you've seen him play in.

At least they are watching the game, it is not all about one team, and this is hopefully a bit of fun that could be useful, not somewhere you can try to score points. Were you even at the game? At least three of us thought the kid had a good game, so he must have been doing something right, and shows there is talent under the radar that doesn't cost the earth.
We beat them easily last season, and they looked destined for relegation and with their BUDGET are now having a great start to the season.

I liked the look of that lad Pike too, Uncle Arthur. Created a lot of their forward momentum.

Don’t tell him Pike.

Make that four that thought their number 8 had a good game. He set his stall out early and constantly demanded the ball and kept it moving. An impressive performance and I assumed he’d be older than he is as he played with a poise and control that you’d normally associate with a more experienced player. I had a feeling I’d seen him play for them last season too, but I must be wrong on that.

Whiteman still the best midfielder on the pitch, though.

Interesting idea this maybe mods could make it a sticky for thoughts after every game?

I’d say we’re one of the bigger fish in the pool, but we are not a Pike or Perch

I heard the lad Pyke had a good game also but was protected somewhat by the referee. Had it not been for that it might have been a different kettle of fish.

No, you're quite right. Jordan 'MJ' Williams started both games v DRFC last season.

His namesake and teammate (also Jordan Williams) was at Dale last season and has now moved to AFC Fylde.

More like a tench, grubbing about in the bottom but with the potential for powerful runs? ;)

I do like their number 8 decent player, but I would say he offers nothing more than Whiteman does and that's the thing for us, we need to bring in better than we have.

He looks a decent player, agreed. Remember him standing out vs Dale away last season as well. Remember him causing a bit of aggro (might have been a couple of feisty challenges) which you don't mind seeing when it's your team tbf.

Grimsby's goalkeeper McKeown was the stand out player on the pitch last night, pulling off a couple of very good saves, following up on his MOM in their game against Bradford at the weekend, and Ogbu a youngster up front was strong and awkward, ran the channels and caused us problems especially when they got in front and needed pressure relieving running the ball out.

Not disagreeing with the performances Selby but Ogbu is no youngster, he's 28 years old and Jolley just signed him from his scouting pool of Swedish based players.

McKeown has been at Grimsby years, always had a good reputation but personally I wouldn't want to see us signing a keeper of that age when we have Lawlor at the perfect age as a goalkeeper progressing at this level.

RA , thanks for the info, I just picked the two on the night, and thought he was a youngster. Our goalkeeper impressed me and Jon at centre half, I honestly thought on the night none of the Grimsby players would get in our full side in a league game, and that is what was so disappointing to me, we lost to a side basically we are better than, and it is throwing money away the club could use to it's advantage.

If people did less carping the forum would be a more pleasant place cos on the scale of things we’re doing pretty well and some are just looking for bones to pick. From a standing start DM has his skates on and hopefully by the close of the transfer window we’ll all be happy again, wahoo! :)

No problem Selby, it's always good to look out for new players especially at this stage in the window.

Their left wing back had quality as well.

Gaz, I thought that Kiwomya started well against him, but Blair never got into the game  and he became isolated, and as you say hegrew stronger as the game went on,we definitely lost forward penetration in midfield when Whiteman went off at half time.

I have no grounds to really say this but I think it could be a pivotal season for kiwomya - he could surprise a few if given a chance. Rovers don't regularly offer long(ish) term contracts out and he got one - I know for a fact that Liam Scully (i speak/text to Liam on a regular basis)nd the board were really chuffed when Rovers got him - after his illness he has a lot to prove. Hopefully he'll come good!

For todays game I am going to go for Harry Souttar their massive  Austrailian  central defender, formally of Ross County and Dundee.
Only 20 years old so time to get better and more experience. Hard and uncompromising, if he improves he will attract atention from bigger clubs.

which makes you wonder why Stoke re-loaned him yet again to Fleetwood for the whole season after playing 11 times for Fleetwood last season - Jones (X Luton) his Stoke manager has now won 4 out of 25 so he might be gone soon and the new manager possibly could recall him ?

Can you recall a player on a seasons loan? and is he out of contract at the end of the season?  Checked, cost Stoke £200,000 and under contract to 2022, one to follow.

Maybe we should sign Wes Burns, he scored more goals today than Marquis has all season...

This week I am going to go for Jack Payne, a player when younger I saw at Bradford City while on loan from Huddersfield.
He is a good midfield player, has a little of Coppinger and Duffy about his play to me in the way he brings other players into the game.
I was disappointed with Lincoln apart from Jack, him being the only one of their team that, who were mainly players that have been around for some time at this level, Toffolo probably another you could say we could go for with a future, but we have been there.
So I am going for Payne, on past performances as well as this, a good player who is probably destined to play his career in the lower divisions and could be a pain in the arse to us for a few seasons to come.

He wasn't too popular at Bradford City in the end.
City supposedly took on paying all of his wage (£13,000) a week to keep him after January until the end of the season.
While the team was heading for relegation he was showboating and not putting the effort in. I would want more commitment than that in a player. Even if you are only on loan.

Idler, I would agree with all that if true, but he looked their best player to me yesterday, and played well when I watched him at Bradford.

He looked a decent player, but we have better players than Payne in that position.

Jonathan, I have no argument with that, he was their best player, but I would not swap any of their players for ours, especially taking the ages in to consideration. he has nowhere near the promise of Whiteman and Sheaf.
