Admittedly there hasn’t been much between them in recent years but for epic games there can’t be many sporting rivalries to match Federer and Nadal? The three finals in three years they had 10 years or so ago at Wimbledon were tremendous matches and the semi this year is a great watch so far.
At 32 I was probably just a twinkle in my grandad’s eye when some of you started watching sport, so would be interested to hear what you consider to be the great rivalries over the years. Borg-McEnroe and Frazier-Ali are often cited...are individual rivalries more deep rooted than team sports like Rangers-Celtic at football or England-Australia at cricket?

I said sporting rivalries, not fat blokes playing pub games rivalries.

I'm no tennis fan but I caught the last 40 minutes of this one. Breathtaking. Literally.

The standard of tennis was unbelievable.
For a 38 (almost) yr old to still be at that level is quite remarkable.
Federer has to go down as one of the all time sporting greats.
Well I think that goes without saying.
How can Footballers complain about having to play 2 matches in a week when you see these tennis players out on court for 4+ hrs 3 to 4 times in a week.

One of the great Sporting rivalries is Yorkshire v Lancashire at cricket.

I’m a huge cricket fan and love it when we put one over on our friends across the Pennines but I can’t remember many, if any, games between the two with anything resembling the quality and intensity of the games between Federer and Nadal. I think there’s something about a one on one that really adds to the intensity of a rivalry - with teams players come and go but in individual games it’s always the same match up.

India v Pakistan.
As for Federer/Nadal, I doubt very much whether there's any animosity between them at all.

Why do you need animosity to have a rivalry?
-
Aye, you don't need it, does make it a lot more interesting imo though.

You don't but Federer and Nadal have so much respect for each other I struggle to call it a rivalry. There has to be some needle, even if only a little.

So “you don’t” but actually you do? I disagree (and given what you’ve written I’m not even sure that you agree with yourself!)
Federer and Nadal aren’t friends. And even if they were, they could still have had the 15 years competing at the top that they have and still be great sporting rivals. Liking someone doesn’t mean you want to compete against them any less.

Of course, Mr Wiggerly doesn't agree with himself. Nobody's THAT bad!

It's a sporting rivalry, a competitive one. Have to agree with the OP that it is up there, particularly in this century.

India v Pakistan. Nothing bigger. 800k ticket applications for this fixture just in the group stages of the world cup
