Let's talk about the Rotherham United cup game Tuesday
« on October 06, 2019, 09:29:30 am by selby »
Some do not like this competition, but I always find it interesting.
  For one thing it gives a chance to players who are coming through, gives us the supporters an idea of just how strong the playing staff at the club is strength wise, and allows players like Joe Wright to push his chances to get back into the league side.
   It is also a realistic chance to win a competition at first team level, we only enter four, and unless a miracle happens we have no chance in two of them.
  There are many questions surrounding this game, will we play many of the team that played yesterday, Lawlor would probably be a shoe in, I hope our new signing will get a game, Joe Wright needs a game, Will Matty Blair be fit? and if we can win we are through to the knock out stages.
  Rotherham themselves are turning their season around, and will want to go further in the competition, and will go out to get a result from the game, and will look at it as a chance to win something.
  Many questions to be discussed about this game, please have your say.

I spoke to him at the Peterborough game and he said it would be about 6 weeks for his recovery.

Selby, I think that the main reason for people not showing much interest in this competition is that the U23 teams are allowed to enter it.
As you say, it is a chance for teams like us to win something.
The U23 teams (with over age players) should form their own competition.

Maybe Thomas who ineligible yesterday might be eligible for this game.
Depends why he was ineligible?

Really hope so no pressure on him but will want to prove himself.

Hope he can get 60 mins also expecting lots of changes most of the team looked out on their feet on Saturday also looked like whiteman had picked up on injury for the way he was holding his leg at the end

  Lot's  possibilities up front to play if fit that will make this game interesting, Is Sterling going to get an outing (hopefully) Kiwomya, Thomas (hopefully), it is May's competition to  score in, and possibly Boocock could figure.
   Lawlor, Wright, and Blaney could all do with a run out at this level, and is a game I hope we  approach with the right attitude and try to make sure we get through to the knock out stages.
  Longbottom who played well in the last round, Amos, Gomes who has also played well when called on and Greaves if good enough to be sitting on the bench in league fixtures should also get a run out, and all these players should be looking to make their mark and impress.
  I am looking forward to this game because of the possibilities it throws up, knowing Rotherham they will be wanting to do well themselves and have a chance of getting through as well as carrying on their improvement of late as well as get one over us.
   Add the fact that in the first round we gave run outs to a couple of players that were a bit surprising makes it interesting
  It would be nice to see us take a decent following to encourage the players, although not that likely I suppose, but hopefully those that do attend get their reward with a good game and result.

The Millers fielded "a youthful side" it says v Manchester United U23s when they lost 0-2 it says on their Website

No hint (as you would expect) if they will do that again - depends on how serious they are on progressing.

Top 2 get through - because beat us and Lincoln and they should qualify as Lincoln now cant as they have lost 2 out of 2

Nothing about POTG on Rovers Website. You can buy up till noon tomorrow and I presume collect at Rovrum as is usual for away games

Here is the article because you may read into " purchase on the day" to mean pay on the Gate. Date of course should read "Tuesday" not Friday

I can’t see us fielding a strong lineup or them . Will probably end up as an under 23s match .

you say that about the under 23s, but it also gives us the chance to look at some potential young lads we might like to sign

Do you mean from the opposition.?

I don’t think we can field triallists.

Has the young lad from Leicester been released or is he still with us? If he is, I can see him playing some part. Hopefully, Thomas’ paperwork is sorted and he gets some minutes. Other than Lawlor, the rest of the positions are anybody’s guess!

We could also send scouts to watch them if they played against each other.

This should be seen as an excellent opportunity to play as many of the fringe players as possible, the likes of Thomas, Wright (needs match practice) Amos et al. Not sure of the rulings about how many changes you can make from the team that started on Saturday, but we should make as many as possible.

Rules
But those team selection rules state that you must select at least four 'qualifying players' within your starting outfield ten. The EFL say a 'qualifying player' is one who meets one of the following:

Had started the immediately preceding First Team Fixture (as defined below);
subsequently starts the immediately following First Team Fixture;
Is in the list of ten Players at the Club with the highest number of starting appearances in First Team Fixtures in the same Season;
Has made forty or more starting appearances in First Team Fixtures or international equivalents (and not limited to the same Club or Season); or
Is on standard loan from a Premier League Club or any EFL Club operating a Category One Academy.

It would give DM the ideal opportunity to play the new striker if papers are sorted which they should be

DFP says he'll be in the squad so should be starting imo if he gets a goal or two it'll set us up for Saturday with Ennis hopefully back. Article says we've no choice but to play a strong team but to expect Amos and Blaney to start. Gomes will also be due a start i'd imagine

I read that and don’t understand it. Does that mean all our u23 side is injured? I’m not sure what it means, but certain players will be ‘rested’, I’m sure (Whiteman, Sheaf, Copps, Sadlier, Anderson, Dieng). May was subbed at the end of Saturday’s game, so I can see him sitting this out, also.

Longbottom, Greaves, Blaney, Wright, Lawlor and Amos will probably all start the game. I would imagine Thomas will get maybe 45 minutes. So, I think maybe:

Lawlor

Halliday
Wright
Blaney
Amos

Greaves
Gomes

Longbottom
Kiwomya
Gibbons?

Thomas

You have to play Four from the previous starting eleven at least so that won’t be the team.

Not necessarily, according to the rules. I might be 2 out, say Sheaf and May or May and Taylor (as it’s Rotherham). One of those 2 could be subbed off early and 1 later to make up my team.
