Deserved that after a very good second half.
Special mentions to Hurst, Bailey, McGrath and Close.
And
Louie Jones, Brilliant save from a last kick of the game and a super penalty save, he also had the one covered that went wide.
Hurst penalty was a cliffhanger! I wish he wouldn’t do that.

So apart from the defensive error early we played well Bailey Close Hurst best three players. Carty not an up front forward on his own better when he went slight left after Ironside came  on.
Molyneux frustrating but in the second half was better.
Jones apart from the goal had a good game when required a pulled a good save near the end and also a very good penalty save.
When teams don’t get in your face we look abetter side.

Great result, decent performance (2nd half anyway!) and on to Bradford for the quarter final! My only gripe is why we can’t do this against teams in our own league, but fingers crossed we start to put it together soon. Well done rovers tonight!  :rtid:

Unbelievably we actually outran, outpressed and outmuscled them in the second half. Not sure how bothered they were but it looked a first team they put out. Great second half effort from us.

Said this all season, Wednesday, hull, Everton, Wigan, Peterborough all spring to mind with good preformances where we probably get a little more time on the ball, certainly think this team is set up to be a league 1 team.

we beat burton too

what's missing so that we can do this against Newport, Harrogate and Morecambe?

2nd half, I think that's the best I've see from us this season. Whatever McCann said to them it worked a treat so well done him.

Close was MOTM for me. Bailey, Moly and Hurst all very good. Nixon too. Jones for those crucial saves.

In fact all of them put a right shift in.

Well done lads.

To do that we have to take our chances we should have scored more tonight and certainly on Saturday in a poor performance.

Amazing what you can do when you have 11 players on the pitch, the substitution made our second half. Makes a difference when you have players on the pitch.

Now if we could put that sort of effort in most weeks we would be looking at the different end of the table.

I mentioned this in another thread, it’s like McCann hasn’t properly figured out league 2 yet because he’s never managed at this level before. Stick teams higher up the pyramid in front of us and we seem to play better.

A bit more dip on a shot he had and he would have scored a worldy

Great performance against a good league 1 side, the change McCann made after 20 mins putting Bailey further forward to press and leaving close as the lone 6 worked wonders and from then we dominated.

Close MOTM ran the show. Jones, Bailey and McGrath also excellent.

Jones’ distribution has to be one of the best if not the best in this league, the goal kick to hurst early on and then the ball over the top for Molyneux at the end of the first half we’re both class, there was only the one late on that he did wrong but tbf it was on and if it had come off Taylor was in.

Need to take that performance into Saturday, should give the lads a lot of confidence after a shootout win and dominating a league 1 side, especially Louis.

Brilliant night, great performance. After the Wyke goal the family behind me collectively agreed that they would leave when we were losing 0-6 and I made a mental note to leave with them, as it looked like it might go that way! But what great character we showed to fight back, and patience when the goal took a while to come, and determination when they came back at us last ten mins when other games we'd have crumbled and conceded. Good atmosphere in the crowd second half as well, fans found their voice and cheered the team home. Honorable mention also for Close's pen - looked like a cheeky panenka!

The best thing about last night was the crowd leaving the ground with smiles on their faces and the joyful chatter, its a long time since I saw that.
And people and clubs ignore this competition and we have been one of the worst at pulling it down, and £40 grand prize money is not to be sniffed at.
The last two times we have met Wigan in cup games 1965 and 2002 they were right at the start of a resurgence in both clubs fortunes, let's hope history can repeat itself for a third time.

I picked up on the crowd after the game, there was a happy buzz as we walked round the stadium...not seen or heard that for a while

How did young Carty get on?
I thought he did ok, without being sensational. Had an amazing first time lob / shot that would have been an absolute screamer, but otherwise went about things without much fuss. Hopefully more to come as he settles in to the team. Seems to have the basics down - touch, pace, strength, effort - that means he should be able to kick on with us.

Not sure he was any better than Jack Goodman

Good to see a manager being honest but just to point out that the report in wrong in saying that the third Wigan penalty was saved, when it actually was wide of the target.
