Fitter and quicker
« on July 22, 2018, 11:23:05 am by DonnyBazR0ver »
Probably like many I haven't had a chance to run my eye over the team yet but may toddle along to the Sheff Utd friendly. From what I hear from McCann, what can I expect to see that's different?

1. Fitter. Sounds like he's set a higher bar in terms of fitness and has put more emphasis on being able to sustain a performance throughout the 90 minutes.
2. Quicker. Coupled with the above, keep the tempo at a higher notch and move the ball quicker with better movement.
3. Strategy. A clearer strategy where every player knows their job without fear of changing formation  during a game and week to week.
4. Efforts on goal. He's said the rate of taking chances to shoot etc, needs to go up. I'm sure we can all relate to that.

Hopefully, with a more settled formation and the right pegs in the right holes we just might see some players flourish. I'm looking forward to the positive effect the return of Andrew will have and I think this could be a new start for Whiteman. Crawford and Malik sound like they've got an eye for goal which should provide more back up for the overworked Marquis. We have some good young players as back ups and will be able to fill in when called upon.

We need a better season as far as injuries are concerned as last season was almost catastrophic. We can't be that unlucky again surely!

I have a feeling we'll be pleasantly surprised at what we see!

Regarding increasing the 8% shots on goal, anyone know the ratio in the friendlies so far, just wondered if it had started to increase

How do you know this is true?
I am sure had it come from Liam Hoden certain posters would be wanting proof GM said this

Now correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't GM's assessment that the team's been too slow in the build-up to getting the ball forward, and not producing enough shots at goal EXACTLY the same conclusion that many of us have been saying all last season, and have been  called compulsive moaners for doing so?

Perhaps the 'gerritforred' brigade wasn't far off the mark!

Yes, funny how some comments are taken on face value, but other comments are endlessly challenged on this site.

One minute we are told that no-one knows all the budgets in league one as they are not published and confidential, and then in  the next thread we are told we had the 7th biggest budget in league one and only came 15th for it.

The bookies who are paying out hard cash and risk losing it but are all wrong, the sports writers are all wrong unless they quote exact word-for-word comments throughout supported by video evidence, and yet words of wisdom come from a few (usually VSC members) on this site.

Negativity, realism, positivity are all irrelevant when the season kicks off. It would just be nice to have honesty from the board and on this site, without a constant challenge of anything that is 100% positive. Reality and the truth will come out on the pitch in 2 weeks time.

Dunno who this Yaya bloke is, but he's really wound you up.
I'd try and rise above him if I were you.

Sounds ggod to me, we have had a lot of injuries in past seasons so lets hope this new regime helps in that department.

By yes-men you mean anyone who isn't convinced that we're going to be relegated with -30 points by December with a team full of 8 year olds.

I think the real Yes men are the ones who say yes to spending their money on attending matches, earning themselves the right to give a positive or negative opinion on the team's performances by doing so. I also think that this forum is an ideal outlet for this.

I agree 100% BB. Sometimes I think there are as many posters who don't attend games and those that do on this forum. There are quite a few of the rose tinted everything is fine and we should all be grateful for whatever we get ones who seem to be none attendees as well.

I was rather hoping to talk about football but alas, another thread hijacked. It's getting to be a waste of time on here trying to discuss the merits of the team without tiresome, childish remarks spoiling it. Hopefully soon the actual football will do the talking.

If that pointed at me, then you're wrong. I haven't said either of those things. Prove me wrong if you're that bothered. But you can't so you won't.

  BACK ON TOPIC
Donny, I posted a couple of days ago on another thread, there is no reason why we cannot be the fittest team in the division, Rotherham prided themselves  from the start of last season to be just that, and with a team of little football ability got promotion.
They were not averse to stopping a game with the tactical foul, when teams threatened to break into their half. I am not advocating  making it part of our game, but at times last season it was noticeable that it disrupted our play, and we were not as equipped shall we say, being younger and not as cynical as the Rotherham, Scunthorpe and Shrewsbury's of this world, Bristol Rovers at home being the best example of us being bullied.
As for shooting more often, I noted in the report of the Birmingham friendly that Coppinger and even Alfie May had shots from outside the area, so something must have been said.

Why on earth would you think the comment was aimed at you at opposed to 1,000 other readers of this thread? Quite bizarre. Obviously, we all think you are wonderful.

Not sure if it would fall under fitness or 'game management', but something to curb the propensity ee seemed to have last season of shipping late goals.

We had enough trouble with injuries last Christmas and yet we have shed 3 players, 3 loan players and 2 academy players. 8 out and only 3 in. See anything wrong with this pattern?

We had loans last season from Man City, Chelsea and Preston and now we only have 1 loan from Leeds. See anything wrong with this pattern? Without DF's contacts we can't pull in the same sort of loans.

With his wealth of Premier league and Championship experience I don't doubt McCann can drive us up into the Championship with the same players that just need to be fitter and quicker. Arsene Wenger couldn't do it, but I'm sure McCann will.
