Grimsby v Doncaster Footage 1979
« on May 14, 2021, 05:31:31 pm by brucef »
Hi,

I hope you don't mind me posting on here. I run an account on Twitter based on the history of Grimsby and am looking for some video footage if any Rovers fans have it.

The game was at Blundell Park on 5th May 1979, Doncaster won 4-3 (I think our former player Jack Lewis scored a hat-trick for you).

It was shown the following day on YTV as Football Special. If anyone has a copy I'd be really keen to get hold of it.

Thanks in advance
Bruce

I remember the game and Jacks hat trick, I think Joe Laidlaw might have scored the other goal

Wasn't it on here a while back?
I think that it might be on YouTube somewhere.

If I'm correct, that was the season the Mariners got promoted under Lawrie McMenemy, after the Rovers had ridiculously sacked him, and replaced him with the useless Maurice Setters.

I was at the game and it was definitely on The Big Match on Sunday.
I’ve just contacted someone who probably has got footage, I’ll let you know when he replies.

I was at that game. Joe Laidlaw was outstanding that day, if my memory serves me correctly. 42 years ago - that’s scary!!!

John Newman was the Grimsby manager at that time, McMenemy was manager of the Mariners in the early seventies.

Further to my earlier post, he can’t help I’m afraid. Have you tried contacting Yorkshire television, they should have it in their archives?

Think that was 1972 Steve. Last game of the season. I think they were champions and brought loads. We beat them with a hobbling Kim Book in goal that night.

Of course, SR, I'm miles out. Now I've thought about it, Lawrie was manager of Southampton when they beat Man Utd in the 1976 FA Cup final.

1978 / 79 saw Grimsby promoted to the old third division along with Reading , Wimbledon and ourselves .

Grimsby were starting to put together a really good side back then and were promoted the following year too to the second division , the Moore brothers , Joe Waters , Mike Brolly , Kevin Drinkall and Tony Ford .

Huge memories of some titanic battles with the Mariners back then .

Sad to see them drop out of the EFL once again , something I'm at a loss to understand , bigger club are Grimsby than many people realise .

Well they should not be flirting with the National League Tyke. Yes they did have a very decent team in the 1980s  and were pulling in gates of 11.000 + if my memory serves me correctly.
Other players they had you did not mention were Alan Buckley and Richard O Kelly our very own no 2 to Sean O Driscoll.
O Kelly is as i always thought he was an extremely good coach and no 2.
He has proved what a top coach he is as is at Villa now as he has been for a while with Dean Smith ( Brentford before that  and Walsall previously together )
Top man and coach who has my utmost respect.

I just looked up Joe. He'll be 71 in July. Christ Almighty.....

I didn't know he ended up playing for Waterlooville. Quite a different style of player to Stocky but fancy 2 of our best midfielders ending up there!

Who was that diminutive Grimsby winger in the mid-late 80’s who always used to torment? Somebody Gilbert?

It was Gary Childs...

That was the first time I had ever been on telly - I was sat on the wall behind the goal, facing the cowshed at half time.

Did Blundell Park also have a cowshed?

Ha ha.
Bloody hell which game am I thinking of then?
Definitely v Grimsby, Definitely Belle Vue, definitely on telly on Sunday, I thought it was 4-3 ( but now I am thinking 3-2). When I saw the date I thought it was a bit earlier than I remembered.

Help, someone

They had a wooden stand behind one of the goals

It was Gary Childs...

We had two good wingers back Then. Gary Childs and Dave Gilbert.

I'm assuming nobody else is aware of this footage? Frustrating because I'm convinced it's out there.

Hijacking the thread slightly, but if anyone has any footage of the games in the link attached, let us know

https://awayonsaturday.blogspot.com/2020/08/help-missing-drfc-footage.html

If the Grimsby game had surfaced in the last 12-18 months, I am sure it would be listed on the link posted above by Monkcaster

Cheers

The thread title says it is looking for a game in 1979 but Monkcasters list only goes back to 1980 plus four extras which don’t include the 1979 Grimsby match.
