New penalties for financial wrongdoing
« on September 21, 2018, 06:01:26 pm by albie »
In the Championship;

Looks like Brum are set for a caning!

Will they do something similar down at Rovers level?

Wow that is steep. Ultimately, only points deductions and full transfer embargos will ever discourage teams from getting themselves into these messes. Fines are ineffective as we've seen with FFP both in this country and abroad. 21 points is essentially a relegation sentence unless your team is very good.

Three things:

1. Leagues One and Two have a different system - SCMP I think.

2. I wonder if this can be applied retrospectively to Birmingham?

3. This is an EFL thing. Will it be applied to clubs who go up and stay up?

Yes TRB, this proposal is for the Championship only at this stage.

I would think that if it is applied there, it is only a matter of time before something similar is introduced lower down.

The retro point is interesting. If Brum are in breach of current rules, then the sanction alone may not be applicable until fully realised.

Like with QPR, Leicester and Bournemouth, I would guess that they would become liable when they wish to be readmitted after relegation.

Good to see sporting sanctions introduced though, not just fines which are covered by the extra income promotion brings.

I agree about sporting sanctions. It seems wrong that teams are deducted points for going into Administration (which is often the result of bad ownership) but not for financial doping. I actually think Birmingham will get a points deduction but at a lower end of the scale. The message will be though that the next club to step out of line will be hammered.

Given that Leicester and Bournemouth have already had financial penalties, I doubt they will be sanctioned again or they will argue Double Jeopardy.
