To lighten the mood on here, even though a draw at Fleetwood isn't a bad result, there are over 50 Rovers players who have made five appearances or less for us since we got back in the Football League.
Be prepared for some proper :turd: from years gone by.
Can you recognise the players by photos?
Here's number one; although to be fair, this fella was that poor he wouldn't even be first choice in Billy Bungle's pub team.
Once it's guessed by someone, I'll put the next one up.
-
Dino Seremet
-
My guess was going to be Seremet. Wasn't he in goal for one of our big cup wins in 2005?
-
Yeah was it Villa game?
-
It's not Seremet but he's on the list with two appearances.
-
Ross Flitney
-
Tonny Nielsen the Danish lad that was fetched over to keep Jan Budtz company?
-
Stuart Jones? He was Andy Warrington's under study in 2004/05
-
Stuart Jones? He was Andy Warrington's under study in 2004/05
Correct.
The next one should be a little more obvious...
-
John Parkin
-
As straightforward as possible.
Next, one of the few players who was actually decent in terms of the career he had elsewhere.
-
Lucas Neill?
-
Lucas Neill?
Too easy.
It's fair to say this next player was an experiment... and the conclusion of the experiment was that he was pretty awful.
-
My first thought was Mamadou Bagayoko.
-
My first thought was Mamadou Bagayoko.
Bagayoko, from memory, mustered up a few more appearances and was absolutely brilliant one game, then absolutely useless in the next game. He was still one of the better players during that dreadful period in our history though.
-
Bamogo?
-
I think it is too. Looks like the KC in the background and Hull away is the only place I remember him playing.
-
100% Bamogo.
-
I wanted to know how many times these players each played for us as well! Surprised Parking played so few. I do remember Bamogo playing in a home game, he was poor.
Bagayoko was a lanky fellow with longer hair I believe, scored twice at Elland Road didn't he? No mean feat.
-
He looked a proper handful did Bagayoko.
I'll never forgot when he got taken off but Diouf had to go and tell him because he couldn't speak English.
-
Bamogo is correct.
Next up is a relatively easy one as he only played last season for us.
-
Joe Pugh?
-
Joe Pugh?
Correct - one appearance in the Checky Chegwin trophy last season.
Next up, a guy who gave us all nightmares in his three appearances for the club.
-
Di Piedi?
All his appearances came under Mickey Walker as well I think.
-
Di Piedi?
All his appearances came under Mickey Walker as well I think.
Di Piedi.
He made one appearance against Port Vale, which was on Sky Sports for some reason. It was also the game where Lewis Guy got his bad reputation from, as he dived late on to win a penalty - something which was noticed by thousands watching on TV, but not the referee.
No wonder he never won f*ck all else for us.
Anyway, I'll raise you a one game wonder from SOD's tenure, watched closely in this photo by Paul Keegan...
-
Ryan Burge?
Great thread BTW AH
-
Ryan Burge is correct.
He had a brilliant impact in that game as we lost 6-0 - our biggest home defeat since playing at the Keepmoat.
Whilst I go and source some images of old players in our kit, here's a simple one to keep things ticking over...
-
Baxendale?
-
(http://www.drfc-vsc.co.uk/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=264314.0;attach=4645)
Jesus! That looks like the ghost of Ian Curtis!
-
Baxendale is correct.
He got a small handful of games under SOD at the start of the 2011-12 season and had we not gone down the route of experimenting, I reckon he'd have gone on to become a regular for us.
Next up, this guy...
-
Marc de Val?
-
This is a brilliant thread ,a lot more interesting than some that's been posted on here recently
-
Marc de Val?
Not quite.
Marc De Val made 21 appearances before deciding he'd rather be in Spain than in Doncaster.
-
To be honest, I just guessed based on his appearance. That and his stint was completely forgettable aside from his injury in a friendly and a red card for a two footer...
-
This latest one is annoying me. I recognise him and I suspect he was a youth product who made a few appearances before leaving. All of the names I can think of don't match the face.
-
I too recognise the face, I'm thinking more that he was a loan player
-
Is the latest Evan Finnegan?
-
Is the latest Evan Finnegan?
It's not Evan Finnegan, though he is on the list having made just the one appearance, and I think he played in the same youth team as the latest face.
-
Is the latest Evan Finnegan?
It's not Evan Finnegan, though he is on the list having made just the one appearance, and I think he played in the same youth team as the latest face.
Got him now. Josh Meade. Made his debut in the same game as Finnegan and Harry Middleton.
-
Is the latest Evan Finnegan?
Was that Crewe in jpt in I think 8-1 loss or sunnthing like that
It's not Evan Finnegan, though he is on the list having made just the one appearance, and I think he played in the same youth team as the latest face.

Correct.
It was in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at Crewe.
Evan Finnegan, who I always rated highly and still think could have broke through under different circumstances, came on in the same game.
Next up, someone else who had lots of potential...
-
Steve Burton?
-
Rob O’Brien
-
Rob O’Brien
Same era, different position.
O'Brien's only appearance for us was in a 2-0 win at Kidderminster in the season we won Division 3.
-
Jon Maloney?
-
Steve Burton?
Good attempt but not correct.
Burton featured seven times during our first season back in the league, but was released at the end of it.
-
Peter Hynes ,on loan from Aston Villa ?
-
Chris Beardsley
-
Jon Maloney?
Another good guess but still incorrect.
Maloney and Peter Hynes, also mentioned above, do feature on the list though.
-
Not the one and only made immortal by a poster on this thread - Chris Black? What irony if so
-
Not the one and only made immortal by a poster on this thread - Chris Black? What irony if so
Unfortunately, this is the closest thing I've been able to find for Chris Black in a Rovers shirt.
-
John McGrath?
-
Ben Jackson?
-
McGrath played loads that season, mostly as sub mind. Kept out by McIndoe.
-
Ben Jackson?
Correct.
He made three appearances in the 2004-05 season and spent time on loan at York, before his career fizzled out.
Next up, one from the present day...
-
Tony Donaldson?
-
Tyler walker? Hopefully will make many more appearances
-
Tyler walker? Hopefully will make many more appearances
Correct, very straightforward and easy and I'm sure he'll escape the clutches of this 'Hall Of Fame' very soon.
Now, here's one of SOD's greatest signings. Not...
-
Tomi Ameobi?
-
Ameobi?
-
Ameobi?
-
Tomi Ameobi?
Correct.
Unluckily, he had 13 minutes of action in competitive football for us, during which we conceded a goal and lost a game.
Next up, this old face...
-
Kirkland
-
Spot on.
I think he got injured in his only game, which was on the TV against Leeds, and quickly returned to Wigan or wherever we had him on loan from.
Now for the next player who made three appearances in the space of a week...
-
Alan Wright
-
Alan Wright.
-
Too easy.
Next up. A player who actually made a second appearance, which nobody remembers, after the one which everybody remembers...
-
Jordan Ball.
-
Jordan Ball.
Yep.
His second appearances came in the league at Hartlepool, four days after his goalscoring debut against Chesterfield in the JPT.
Next up, somebody you've probably forgot ever existed (I certainly had)...
-
Robbie Clark.
-
Robbie Clark.
Correct.
One appearances against Accrington in the cup before he left and ended up playing in Sweden.
Here's the last one for tonight. Four legends and one very bad defender who Dave Penney was accountable for bringing to the club...
-
Sam Oji
-
Correct.
He was very dodgy, Oji.
-
First one for today...
-
Ben Saunders?
-
Ben Saunders?
Not quite.
The phenomenon that was Ben Saunders didn't actually appear for us in a competitive game.
-
Is it the lad White who scored in a 5-1 win at BV. On loan I think.
-
Peter Hynes
-
Hynes
-
Tomi Ameobi?
Correct.
Unluckily, he had 13 minutes of action in competitive football for us, during which we conceded a goal and lost a game.
Adding to this, not only did we covcede a goal but it was a header from a free kick that Ameobi gave away. He ran on, committed a foul, Wolves scored and that was it for his Rovers career.
-
Tomi Ameobi?
Correct.

didn't he get sent off for 2 yellows, or am I thinking of someone else?
-
John Parkin
aka "The beast" 😀
-

Correct.

Not sure who you do mean but that wasn't Ameobi, I'm sure.
-
Nor am I, I can’t remember other rhan there was someone a few seasons ago, arrived on loan and cane on as a sub then got 2 yellows.. young ish player too..
-
Nor am I, I can’t remember other rhan there was someone a few seasons ago, arrived on loan and cane on as a sub then got 2 yellows.. young ish player too..
Herold Goulon at Watford in the experiment season maybe IDM?
-
No it was at the KM..
Apologies for diverting the thread - perhaps this player is one of those with less than 5 games for us?
-

Thought he looked ok actually. Big bloke.
-
Is it Clownshoes Jr?
-
No it was at the KM..
Apologies for diverting the thread - perhaps this player is one of those with less than 5 games for us?
The only player I can think of matching that description is Herald Goulon who somehow doesn't feature on this list as he made six appearances.
Anyway, Peter Hynes was correct - he made five appearances in a month-long loan in the 2003-04 season.
Next up is another one game wonder who came, saw and didn't bloody conquer!
-

I think the player I recall is Kazenga Lua Lua.. can't recall the games though..
-
eddy lecygne
-
Correct.
He made a solitary substitute appearance during the run which took us from the fringes of the League One play-offs to the fringes of League Two.
Next up, this unlikely lad...
-
Kazenga Lua Lua features on the list by the way, but I don't recall him getting a red card.
That said, I don't recall many players ever being sent off during SOD's reign, but that's another debate altogether.
-
I can't find him getting a red either - I do have a vague recollection of a sub/debutant at the KM getting two yellows though..
-

He should have done! He was flying in to tackles left, right and centre against Palace (?) at knee height most times. Raw was an understatement.
-
Is that last one Michael Timlin?
-
Peter Gilbert
-
Peter Gilbert
Says something when I recognise the Scunny player (Cleveland Taylor?) more - always looked quite useful I thought :chair:
-
Correct.
Peter Gilbert managed a whopping five appearances and was forgotten by the end of the season by most folk.
Next up is a player who spat his dummy out and is possibly the most useless to appear on this list so far...
-
Lee Fowler! Dreadful.
-
Correct.
Next...
-
Lee Suk-Young? Steady player I thought!
-
Correct.
He made three appearances under Dickov in that fateful Championship season.
Next up, a really obscure blast from the past...
-
Yun Suk-Young surely, he's our only ever Korean as far as I know.
He was a decent player. Unfortunate name for the Western world though.
-
Is that liam green?
-
Is that liam green?
Yes.
He made two appearances and then seemingly disappeared from football, following a spell at Ilkeston.
Next up is a player who signed for us to get experience of sitting on a bench getting splinters up his backside. Possibly our most peculiar ever signing as he never actually figured in a game.
-
Is he the Kiwi lad?
-
Cameron Howieson.
I will never forget his part in our 2013 title win...sitting on the bench alone looking gloomy as owt in the dressing room as everyone else celebrated their success.
-
Back at Auckland FC via St Mirren.
-
Surely Howieson can't be on the list because he never actually played in any game for us?
-
Surely Howieson can't be on the list because he never actually played in any game for us?
I wouldn't have him on the list either, but I stumbled across his photo when looking for another player so it was worth posting.
Here is someone who did play for us though...
-
Looks like Jack McKay.
-
Is that Lewis Ferguson?
-
Is that Lewis Ferguson?
Lewis Ferguson was another one who never got on the pitch, like Howieson.
-
Looks like Jack McKay.
Not Jack McKay, but you're very close ;)
-
Looks like Jack McKay.
Not Jack McKay, but you're very close ;)
Is the other brother called Paul?
-
Looks like Jack McKay.
Not Jack McKay, but you're very close ;)
Is the other brother called Paul?
Correct.
He made a solitary appearance, against Burton in the JPT, before his old man decided that he was too good for us.
Jack McKay also features on the list though he managed four appearances.
Next up, someone from the present day who'll be off this list sooner or later - quite possibly by the end of the season if things go well for him...
-
Danny Amos
-
Danny Amos, at the Emirates!
-
Correct.
Next up, another one game wonder from back in t'day...
-
I will guess at Bradley Grayson, who played in the same junior team as me for a time. He came on in a JPT defeat to Accrington and went on to play in Sweden I believe.
-
I will guess at Bradley Grayson, who played in the same junior team as me for a time. He came on in a JPT defeat to Accrington and went on to play in Sweden I believe.
Correct.
He's at either Mickleover or Matlock nowadays, but he's played for a lot of local non-league clubs and in Asia as well at one stage.
Next...
-
I've already guessed him for a previous one but.. Michael Timlin?
-
I've already guessed him for a previous one but.. Michael Timlin?
Correct.
He joined on loan from Fulham and did slightly more than Cameron Howieson during his loan spell, but not much else at all.
Next up - someone who can claim to have scored a goal for us...
-
Josh Payne? Played in the Premier League, believe it or not.
-
Josh Payne? Played in the Premier League, believe it or not.
And then he got sent to prison a couple of years later for whipping a guy on the street with his belt.
Next up...
-
Cody Prior
-
Cody Prior
Nope, but he does currently feature on the list - purely down to being the same sort of age as this kid.
-
Joe Pugh?
COYR
-
Scattergood?
-
Scattergood?
Correct.
Next...
-
James Horsfield? Loaned from Man City.
-
James Horsfield? Loaned from Man City.
Spot on - he mustered up three appearances for us before being shown the door in Fergie's first couple of weeks.
The next face is again someone who didn't make much of an impression...
-
Deserves to have been shown the door for that dress sense alone...
-
Did he star in Broke Back Mountain? yee ha!
-
Chris Neal I believe. Ex Preston North end and port vale keeper?
-
Chris Neal I believe. Ex Preston North end and port vale keeper?
Correct. I'm not sure whether his dress sense or goalkeeping was worse, but that's another debate.
Next up, an ugly footballer...
-
Looks like a young Les Dennis.
-
Andy Cambell, brother of Neil
-
Andy Cambell, brother of Neil
Correct.
He mustered up three appearances in the 04-05 season, then disappeared into obscurity.
Someone else who made three appearances was this guy...
-
Jordan Bowery.
-
Jordan Bowery.
Correct.
An easy one to guess and a player who probably never will fulfil his potential.
Next...
-
Morgan James?
-
Morgan James?
Correct.
Hopefully, he'll get the opportunity to improve on his tally in the coming months.
Next...
-
Clue: This player played for us in a relegation season.
-
Rachid Bouhenna? That is a total guess.
-
Rachid Bouhenna? That is a total guess.
He never made an appearance for us.
-
It's not Bouhenna but it's the same season.
One of SOD's signings.
-
Not Dennis Souza is it?
-
Not Dennis Souza is it?
Nope, it's not the only Brazillian in the entire universe that's crap at football.
-
Diatta?
-
Nope, it's not Diatta.
-
Herold Goulon?
-
Reece Brown
-
Reece Brown
Correct.
Next...
-
felipe mattioni
-
felipe mattioni
Correct.
Next up, a proper blast from the past...
-
Adam Brown?
-
Adam Hughes?
-
Adam Brown?
Correct.
Next...
-
Adam Brown?
remember him scoring in a 4-2 win at Stockport missed 1st goal ended up in home end with cheap tickets then got kicked out cellebrating when we made it 2-2 and watched us score last 2 through a hole in gate
-
Yes the stewards were more than a bit overzealous that day and at one stage tried to suggest we all stand at the back of the stand despite there being seats available! Nonsense, very badly organised but worth it to see a 4-2 win. Never been back to Stockport since and am glad Rovers haven't had cause to.
-
Adam Brown?
Correct.
Next...
Is it Ross "Rabbit in the Headlights" Etheridge?
-
Looks like Fielding to me
-
Looks like Fielding to me
Correct.
Next up, a good player from the otherwise crap experiment...
-
Marc Antoine Fortune.
-
Marc Antoine Fortune.
Correct.
Without doubt, IMO, he was the best player from that embarrassing season.
Next...
-
Michael Woods.
-
Michael Woods.
Correct.
I think that mugshot will probably appear in a collection of ugly footballers at some point.
At least his mother will love him though - even if we didn't as he only made two appearances.
Next up, this guy...
-
Oscar Gobern? Loaned from QPR.
-
Oscar Gobern? Loaned from QPR.
Correct.
He made five appearances for us in total before drifting away into the wilderness.
Last face for tonight...
-
Dave! Dany the toe, to his friends.
-
Dave! Dany the toe, to his friends.
Nope.
-
Emile Sinclair?
-
Emile Sinclair?
Correct.
His career has dropped off a cliff over the last few years and he's now at Ossett Town in the Northern League.
-
Marc Antoine Fortune.
Correct.
Without doubt, IMO, he was the best player from that embarrassing season.
Next...
Surely you must rate Diouf as the best player of the experiment!!
-
Marc Antoine Fortune.
Correct.

Next...
Surely you must rate Diouf as the best player of the experiment!!
No, absolutely not.
That whole shambles of an experiment and how utterly ridiculous it was, was summed up when Diouf and a couple of others went out on the lash the night before the game at Southampton - the one where Billy Sharp scored twice for them to stick another nail in our relegation coffin.
It was as unprofessional and insulting towards the rest of the squad as you could possibly get.
-
I'm glad you remember that Anne as many seem to overlook it when discussing Diouf's time with us. His attitude, as it seemed to be throughout his career, left much to be desired.
Sadly I contrived to miss Fortune's entire spell with the club, unable to attend any of the few games he played in.
-

The worst thing about the Diouf saga was Saunders' sheer reluctance to do anything about it.
Despite the countless photo of him in a nightclub, his response was 'I've had a word with him and he says he wasn't there' which smacked to me of a manager who was more of a placeman for a project, rather than an actual manager with authority.
Thank god we binned that project off, once relegation was confirmed.
Anyway, here's the next face. It's Mark De Val, on the right, but who is he sitting next to on the way to a match at Brighton in 2014...
-
Marc Antoine Fortune.
Correct.
Without doubt, IMO, he was the best player from that embarrassing season.

I don't disagree with what you're saying but Diouf was the best player we signed that year imo.

I'd go as far to say, the most talented player we've ever signed. Just his attitude that let him down.
-
Evan Finnegan?
Correct.
Next up, back to the present day with three appearances (and maybe a fourth tonight)...
-
That season was comparable to 97/98 in the sheer madness of the goings on. I did not know whether it was closer to truth or fiction the story saying we were to be signing the Real Madrid midfield guy who had dropped to the bench there. Load of b*llocks as it turned out, but there was some crazy stuff that season. Anyone found Plessis yet?
-
Clue for the current player... he didn't actually feature tonight, but has figured in our other games in the Check a Chegwin Trophy this season.
-

Not forgetting the mad 24-48 hours when we were meant to be signing Robert Pires.
-
I heard from a source that's always been on the money that we were actually speaking to him informally but he just didn't fancy it.
-
I have no recollection at all of Pores being linked yet a Google has a BBC article quoting the man himself talking about being asked to play for us. Wild.
-
There was also a major rush of money at the bookies for us to get promoted. If some of those linked had signed,AND performed it could've been very interesting.
Shay Given, Stephen Ireland, Pires were all heavily rumoured to be coming.
-
Evan Finnegan?
Correct.

Im sorry but if we are talking about actual footballing ability then no-one came close to Diouf from the "experiment" !!
-
John Filan.
Wasn't he - or isn't he - Australian?
-
Marc Antoine Fortune.
Correct.
Without doubt, IMO, he was the best player from that embarrassing season.

No doubt that Diouf was the BEST PLAYER, irrespective of his night club antics.
He actually really tried when he was on the pitch, unlike some of the others that season.
-

I'm still not convinced that Diatta actually existed either.
-
John Filan.
Wasn't he - or isn't he - Australian?
Correct.
He played for us in October 2006 in a season where we named about 6/7 goalkeepers in the matchday squad over the course of the season - others being Ben Smith, Jan Budtz, Alan Blayney, Neil Sullivan and Lee Cockerham. I'm sure there was at least one more as well.
Next up is another goalkeeper who understand the concept of staying on his line, but didn't grasp the concept of putting his arms in the air to at least attempt to save the ball if it was flying over his head.
-
That last paragraph is not much of a clue really, given some of our lot.
-
Is that Michael Ingham?
-
Is that Michael Ingham?
Correct.
His inability to do his job cost us points at Hartlepool in 04-05 and he made two appearances before his services were no longer required.
Next up, a one game wonder who actually managed to carve out a decent career after his short stint with us...
-
Jon-Paul Pittman
-
Jon-Paul Pittman
Correct.
The only other player left on the list is young James Morris - but I've been unable to find a photo of the poor sod and even DROS just has a silhouette of him, rather than an actual photo.
I hope you've all enjoyed the quiz - if I get chance to source photos, I'll also list those players who've made 10 appearances or less at a later time.
-
I enjoyed it for sure. Thanks for going to the effort of running it.
-
Excellent thread. Hats off to you for the effort you've put in there.
-
One of the best ever threads on here ,really enjoying it
-
A fantastic thread. Shame it’s fine to an end
Well done for starting it and keeping it going.

When I get the chance, I'll do those players with 10 or less appearances.
It might be a day or two though and there's some players, not on the 5 or under list, which makes you wonder how the f**k did he make so many appearances.

I thought this player (in red) might be on the list. However, he did play for Rovers this century!
Any guesses?
