Interesting thread. My understanding is that EFL clubs who wanted to scrap the competition or get rid of the B Teams were warned that Premier League "solidarity payments" might be threatened. The EFL's sweetener was to cover any losses. A Grimsby director let the cat out of the bag after a poorly attended dead rubber against Sunderland.
