I'd heard it was supposed to be a very good film.

What I'm seeing is pathetic, fawning, simplistic shite. god f**king help us if people think this is historically accurate.

I went to the cinema to see this film about our greatest ever peace time Prime Minister. Long live Maggie.

Entirely separate from the politics (because everyone knows she was an evil, twisted c*** with deep psychological issues, who deserves buggering by the three-headed hound of hell for all eternity) I'll consider the film as a piece of art in itself

As a film, compare and contrast with The Damned United.

Both taking complex, iconic characters. Deeply brilliant and deeply flawed.

The Damned United superbly teased out the brilliance and the flaws of its subject. Hubris, Nemesis and Redemption. The eternal issues surrounding brilliant leaders.

The Iron Lady, by contrast, was w**k material for Thatcher sycophants. It barely touched on her inherent contradictions and the personality issues that brought her down. It set up one-dimensional, nasty, evil, back-stabbers as the reason she was laid-low. And it didn't even do THAT with any subtlety. Cringingly poor stereotypes portrayed throughout.

But there are always some dipshits who will lap up this sort of second-rate cack.

What delightful individuals some of you are.  Ironically, spouting such vile abuse makes you just as nasty as the person you purport to be so evil.  Say what you like about the politics but any genuine  heartfelt reasons you have to be anti-Thatcher are severely undermined when you resort to language like that.  I'll get my handbag....

Say what you like about Maggie, but she sorted this country out good and proper. If it wasn't for her, grasping lefties like Arthur Scargill would still be running the country.

My favourite memory of the little lady is of her crying her eyes out in the back of the jag when they kicked her out of her house and job in November 90. Never has the thought of someone with the onset of Altzheimers been so enjoyable. And they're trying their best to make her a hero! Chuffed to bits she's got a sore fanny!

It's no Kings Speech or Avatar by any means, I was partly dissappointed with the film when I first saw it, there is potential there to focus more on the uphill struggle she faced getting to the position she did, but as far as acting goes Meryl Streep did a lot better than I first thought and while nothing like Maggie herself, Streep's take on it was somewhat entertaining.

When she was booted out, she left a country where inflation and unemployment were higher than when she took office, where Govt debt to GDP had fallen but was just about to increase to a higher level than when she took office (as a result of the early 90s recession that her policies led to) and the private debt explosion that led us to the recent disaster had been set in motion. And the country's growth rate after her was not so much as 0.1% better than it was before her.

And yet we still hear how she "sorted the country out".

We might even still have a country.

Thought I'd best highlight that bit days later in case anyone thought I was defending the indefensible.

You've got me all wrong Billy boy.  I love a bit of banter you boss eyed, gap toothed pillock ;) Surely though banter is something that goes on between people who are aware of the discussion, not those that have no clue what is being said and therefore can't defend themselves. You could always send Maggie a letter with the contents of your previous post so she can prepare some 'banter' of her own.  I'm sure Mick has her address.

Oh and just so you know, I was born and bred in Donny but moved to the SW for the sun and pasties. Jumping to conclusions seems to be the way you operate though, judging by previous posts and I doubt you will change now. As you were.

You've got him all worked out. If you don't agree with everything the leftie nutjob espouses he resorts to trying to belittle you. He's tried it on many times with me in the past and has always received a brutal battering. He doesn't bother with me any more now because he knows I have a far superior intellect and he is totally fed up of me making him look daft in front of his leftie mates.

South West.

How did you guess that I'm a gap-toothed pillock? Do I know you? If not, that was a genius guess!

By the way, I am genuinely interested in where these previous posts of mine are that lead you to think that the way I operate is to jump to conclusions. Genuinely interested.

I'm no genius Billy although it's kind of you to say so. As for looking up some previous posts, if you are that genuinely interested then please feel free to pour over your many contributions in search of an example.  Knock yourself out. Please do. To be honest it's probably just easier to wait a few days, as I'm sure some leap of imagination will crop up in one of your newer offerings.

Oh and Mick, please don't pander to me in the hopes of finding an ally. You're as bad as Billy when it comes to peddling one sided facts that suit your political views.  If the country is in such a state, its only because there are people out there who lap up the extreme left and right nonsense people like you spout on a regular basis.

If you have a superior intellect, why are you sticking "espouses"  there? It makes no sense.

See South West, I'm actually genuinely bemused. You say that jumping to conclusions seems to be the way that I operate. But I can honestly not think of a single time that I have done that in a serious discussion. Not once.

And I have looked back.

And I still can't find any times.

So I guess we're just going to have to agree to differ aren't we? You made an accusation and neither of us can find any evidence to justify it.

As for the extreme left wing jibe, I'm not sure if that one was aimed at me, but if so thinks have changed when extreme left wingers support the economic approach of a stock-market philandering Liberal gentleman. I guess we'll have to agree to differ again.

Good one TRB

Seriously though, it IS fascinating how far to the Right opinions have moved over the last two generations. The economicron policies of Brown and Balls are no more left-wing than those of Rab Butler.

Keynes would have been horrified to hear people blithely criticising his ideas as left-wing extremism. An extreme left-winger wants to overthrow Capitalism. Keynes wanted to save it from itself.

Now come on Billy, I think it is fair to say you assumed I was a Thatcher/Conservative lover because I didn't wish to dance/piss/shit on her grave.
