Secure Unit planning application

Hi, just to let you all know of a planning application made recently in the Scawsby area.  A secure accomodation unit complete with security fencing is being proposed on land adjacent to Jewson on Barnsley Road. In very close proximity to a school and housing estate.

It is unknown who the building will accomodate but its worrying being so close to a school.  An e petition has been raised by concerned parents.

Secure hospital doesn't mean hospital though, it means prison for people with medical issues (usually psychological), like Rampton Hospital near Retford. Places like that are definitely needed, but like Gary says, near a school isn't exactly ideal.

The difficulty is in finding an appropriate site and it depends just how secure and what level of risk the patients present. It might only be low level, perhaps elderly patients who are more of a risk to themselves than anything else.

However I only recently discovered there is quite a large high security place at the back of Hayseldens VW showroom on Marshgate, out of sight, out of mind. It is quite an isolated spot but still close to homes on Sprotbrough Road and in Bentley.

There's one right next to a big college and hotel where I live. If you didn't know any better you would think it was just a hospital.

I grew up in that area it wouldn't really bother me as has been said walking across Barnsley road was much trickier from memory.  If it's secure I don't see what the problem is?

The problem being is that in the plans there is to be a roof top garden. Good idea when there is a school across the road.

The problem being is that there will be grade A sex attackers in there. I don't just mean rapists, I mean people who do unthinkable violent sexual acts against children.

These people have been known to escape from Cheswold before. Plus, it's not totally secure as some of these offenders do have supervised day release so quite easy for them escape.

Why put it there when they could buy a strip of land off the M18 out of the way.

Stu, these people will not get better. They are totally past any sort of rehabilitation, there are people in there with psychotic, killing tendencies. I know a couple of people who have worked there if you knew what some of these have done you wouldn't want this place built near where your children grow up and go to school.

A different situation I know, but how many of you give a toss about whats happening not 30 yards from my door regarding the landslip in Stainforth, all I hear and read about is people moaning about when the trains are going to be running again, I ve heard no one from outside of the area mention the poor air quality or conditions we residents have to put up with while they move the pit tip. I dare say if this secure unit was in other areas of Doncaster you would n`t give a shite!

You're wrong there Dave. If this place was to be built next to a school in balby or  St Ainforth, I would still hold the same views.

VD, I have lived very close to this place for the last eight years. I've seen the top of the building all the time I have lived here but didn't give it much thought as its hiden quite a bit. I actually have discovered a great dog walking track that runs alongside the perimeter fence to this place so have walked by it plenty of times. Doesn't appear to ever be any trouble and looking at the hight of the fence, no one is going over it. Having said that, the people in there don't look like they will even try.

This 'unit' is very well hidden and if you didn't know it was there you wouldn't see it so if it was in a more 'open' place it might have got more attention/objection but as I say I didn't even know about it for probably five years even though only being a few hundred yards away.

As always these things aren't as bad as people make out....

Thats because it is tucked away, Sproty.  The proposed one is right opposite Saltersgate school, on a main road and bus route, and next door to a supermarket.  Highly visible, and if a violent "guest" of the facility were to get out then they would be slap bang in the middle of a bustling community with multiple options of how to get away.  I'm objecting to the location, not the facility.  There are plenty of other sites in Doncaster that can offer a more secluded location for this facility

The secondary school I attended in London had a secure mental hospital next door. There were never any problems apart from kids trespassing on hospital grounds.

Well someone's now absconded from Cheswold on a day visit to town centre

I'm clearly no expert but what do these day visits to the town centre actually achieve?  I'm genuinely interested.

If someone is dangerous enough to be in one of these units because they need that care and are presumably a danger to themselves or the public, and (as recently demonstrated) slipping away from an escort seems to be a doddle, should this be happening?  I remember the tragic case of Casey-Lyanne Kearney only a couple of years ago, killed by a former patient from a secure unit apparently at random in Elmfield Park, and before her the death of Emma Brody, stabbed to death in the Arndale Centre (now the Frenchgate).
