Hallelujah! England are going to look like England again!
« on February 07, 2018, 06:47:22 pm by Glyn_Wigley »
The new kit has been unveiled, and joy of joys they've brought the traditional blue shorts back, and not before time! Having to watch England in all white never resonated with me, it felt like watching Leeds. I'm not overwhelmed by the shirts but at least they don't look like the 'badly counterfeited' design they had a few years ago.

Never been a fan of the 'Traditional' blue shorts as I've still to find any blue on the England flag however, massive fan on the 'away' red kit, which for obvious reasons as we wore it at home in 66 and always fills me with pride. For me, this should be our 'home' kit.

Good to see they've gone back to classic designs. Shame they won't stick with it after the World Cup.

Blue has always been the footballing colour of England after white of course. In sports, colours are not always chiefly derived from the national flag and that is true of many. Italy have always played in blue, they are the "azzurri" yet there is no blue on the national flag. Likewise, red is their racing colour. Britain's racing colour is traditionally green. The Dutch are "The Oranje" but their flag has no orange on it. Germany's is white, and so on and so forth.

Does the blue come from the 3 lions?

Most but not all (Italy for one) Countries play in their National Flag colours

Our Flag is Red and White (not the Union Flag which is Red White and Blue) so we should be like most of the other Countries and stick to Red and White. Ignore the Blue totally

Why we did not stick to the concept of the 66 World Cup Shirt is beyond me

The 1966 World Cup shirt was white. We only wore the change strip red shirt for the Final so that the two teams would be properly distinguishable on black-and-white televisions.

PS The Northern Irish flag doesn't have any green on it...

See my above post. National sporting colours do not always line up with national flags, and Glyn rightly points out that the kit worn in the 66 final was actually our change strip. The England football crest is blue and depicts three blue lions in a blue crest. It's really quite straight-forward.

Well I did mean the World Cup winning Shirt of course.

... and I did concede that "Most but not all (Italy for one) Countries play in their National Flag colours" which covers NI and one or two more Countries as well

I will accept Blue Shorts for Engerland when I see Wales and Scotland play in Red white and Blue at Football and Rugby Union

England at least in RU seem to have it (mostly) right White Shirts and Shorts with Red Trim !

Its this kind of pseudo Union Jack (Flag) style kit I most object to - well at least 3 of these

How long has the old shirt been in use, it cannot be much more than a year if that. Just another money making exercise for the FA?

When I used to go watch England regularly in the 80’s you rarely saw the St George cross on show around the grounds. It was almost always the Union Jack (ours had Doncaster written in white paint across the middle!) The kits of the time were almost always made up of red, white & blue I think.

We wore it in Euro 2016, so I'm guessing they released it about the same time of year as this one, so 2 years. Longer than any clubs keep their kits for these days.

England have had a 2 year policy on shirts for quite some time. They used to alternate between home and away at one point but that seems to have stopped now.

Red White and Blue is fine for Great Britain or UK, but for England, it should be Red & White, there is no place for Blue.

The England national football team has literally played with blue on their kit since inception in the 1870s, but alright.

So do I - I have now added a Poll although I suspect the "who gives a Donald (Duck)" option will probably score the highest
