Greetings again
New season new optimism. New teams to ponder
I am however after some donny history
What are the best, most original player nicknames for Rovers players or managers and how did they originate
Best for league one and I'd love to be in the same position as we both were last year..or better still both one higher
Peter

Every goalkeeper we have is called Dennis.

Only because it's easy Nudga
-
Animal.
What springs into your mind is true. You didn't mess with Animal (Aka Alan Little)
-
Sumo
-
We've also had Windy, Bruno and Dangerous Dave
-
Everyone that leaves, especially after being offered a new contract is Judas.

I think the " Dennis" goalkeeper thing came from Belle Vue when it was shouted mainly by Bill (Santa) , Paul ( who has sadly passed away ) and Stuart ( who still makes the occasional comment !!! from the back of the West stand ). I listened to their banter for at least 15 years from one terrace step in front. Any one from the other side of the Trent was a " Southern Jesse ".
If we were playing a team from the other side of London or a coastal team they were classed as French.
Lancashire teams were hated because they were from Lancashire
Carlisle,Darlo,Hartlepool were classed as Scottish
Welsh teams were always suspect because they were Welsh
Barnsley and Rotherham were always laughed at once none of their interbred fans had snook on the terracing close by. It was easy to tell because in the winter time their gloves always had an extra finger or two.
The advent of names on shirts was one of funniest things ever, especially in the conference on a night match, the full backs / wingers used to get some right grief

How many of you can identify Yogi .
-
AB - Worked with him for a short while around 1990. Great bloke
-
Correct Stockton. One of his team mates of 66 told me he would never pass the ball unless forced to.
-
How many of you can identify Yogi .
BooBoo and Ranger Smith probably could..
-
The tyrefitter, Aaron Taylor Sinclair
-
The Hoff - the only other Dutchman to play for us - when we didn't know his name when he was a pre-season trial list for us.
-
Dave.
Seemingly any foreign player, for reasons that aren't apparent to me.

Are you really saying that the nickname dave given to RODNEY Mongola isn't obvious as to why? Lol
-
So what was the reason behind Dany N'Guessan being slapped with the "Dave" tag? "Lol".
I'm not trying to make some "PC" point before people decide to wade in and make out that's why I have an issue with it - I don't have an issue with it, I just don't really get where it's come from.
And even so, it's a slightly tenuous link to the name Dave...

If I remember right it came from this originally about Darren Moore when he was at west Brom. Football fans being original picked it up for any large black player.
-
I remember when I first started watching Rovers some fans called Charlie Williams "stag". Probably because of his running I suppose.

I'm 100% sure the dave tag given to rodney was because of only fools and horses, no other reason. I'm not aware of any other dave nicknames. I'm 1000% sure it's not some subtle racist thing either...its just a bit of banter..
-
That was my take on it too.

...well I wasn't trying to insinuate that there were racist undertones, you've just decided I was. I know it's from only fools and horses, but it's a bit tenuous. Not sure how you can link N'Guessan to that, however...
-
I like the Only Fools comparison for Kongolo, it's amusing and somewhat witty.
The only similarly nicknamed *foreign* player I can think of is Chelsea's Cesar Azpilicueta, christened Dave by fans due to his complex surname. "We'll just call you Dave, we'll just call you Dave... Azpilicueta, we'll just call you Dave".
-
I've waited and can't believe that no one has mentioned the greatest player in my time the "King" .

I disagree, the second you say you are not trying to be PC strongly suggests that you believe there was some non PC thing going on, Danny was black they called him dave, Rodney is black they call him dave as well. Absolute bollox, it's not a tenuous link, it's the most obvious nickname any player has ever had that didn't include shortening his actual name. It's people like you that encourage the pc nanny state bollox. Trying to find rascist links when non exist, you should be ashamed of yourself.

What the f**k are you talking about?
-
King Alick.
Thanks Chris, glad someone remembered him.
-
King Alick.
Thanks Chris, glad someone remembered him.
The thing is I don't remember Alick ever being called that while he was still playing. As far as I recall that epithet was given to him later, and if so then is it really a nickname? Just pedantry of course, and he us undeniably the King.
-
I recall the chant of " King Aleeeeeick"
-
I recall the chant of " King Aleeeeeick"
GR, I only saw him after his comeback in 1963. Did fans chant that in his first spell, or did I just miss the whole chant?
-
The Wing Commander
-
Not one of ours, but Dave Carroll of Wycombe (about 25 years ago) was known as "Jesus" as he was tall and thin with long wavy hair..
For us, Animal was my favourite in terms of nicknames, but I could get used to "Dave" for Rodney - and that is only due to only fools and horses..

If he gives a penalty away we can call him a plonker 😀

Can't believe no-one has mentioned Sarge Albrighton and Corporal Jones.
-
King Alick.
Thanks Chris, glad someone remembered him.
I knew who you was referring to it was tongue in cheek based on age difference, I didn't see him play not my era, I'm sure Robs comment was the same.

The funniest i remember was for Kiki Musampa at Man City.
After his first training session he asked the lads why they kept calling him Chris instead of Kiki !!

I recall the chant of " King Aleeeeeick"
I remember that too in his spell with us in the sixties.

Must just be me getting old then. King Alick as a nickname it is
-
Don't worry Dutch I thought it was me, been singing it all yesterday, wife has arranged a dementia test.
Thanks Hound confirmed that I was not imagining it.

:thumbsup:First thing I thought of when it got to King Alick - remembered the chant instantly
-
Peter Kitchen = the rat
-
Wasn't Tim Ryan called the rat?
-
Walter Langton "warhorse" or "hoss".
-
Curtis Main has a few nicknames, all of them very colourful...
-
Big Bren (Brendan O'Callaghan).
Windy Miller (Ian Miller).
-
Flying Pig - John Ogston
-
Slateloose Robinson in the 90's ?
-
colin Legless 😊
-
Ronnie Walker was called "Peg Leg''
-
Thanks for these...some good ones in there
BTW you will be delighted to know that apparently the St Lukes Bowl match we played in midweek counts as a first team match so we get Carey back a game early...
Score first and you'll probably win though :0
-
Yogi was Albert Broadbent.
I love the Sumo one, who was that for? He must have been a fat barstud!
Good luck!
-
And with utter genius it appears we don't get Carey back but we do get Nathan Blissett "non banned" for the three games...
Oh well...going to be a long season!

Gary Brabin was Sumo.

Just a quick update from me...first of all thanks for the memories...I have filled in some of the gaps through my own research but just wanted to clarify a couple
Who was the Wing Commander?
Slateloose Robinson I assume was Theo...any rationale why he was known as Slatelose....was this widespread?
Why was Peter Kitchen the rat....
Cheers and good luck for the rest of the season...ours is a nightmare so far!
-
Wing Commander - Peter Heritage, because of his resemblance to the Rik Mayall character in Blackadder Goes Forth.
Slatesloose- Ronnie Robinson, who was a bit mad (I.e he had a few slates loose.)
Peter Kitchen was called The Rat due to his tache. (This was the 70s when moustaches were very fashionable.)

My dad used to call Paul barns 'cart horse'
-
The Sarge
And wasn't Barry Miller The BazGod?
-
I remember one or two calling Charlie Williams Stag in my first season as a supporter.
-
Talk of fans being offensive towards their own team's players isn't a modern occurrence, I remember Graham 'Willie' Watson being called Mary!
-
Clown Shoes
That always seemed very witty and apposite to me. I wanted him to do well but that is my memory of him - he never overcame the nickname, always a bit of a joke.
I always liked 'Duggie' as a nickname. A player I loved and his nickname seemed like a bloke from the pub or the factory - which is exactly what he was.
-
tokyo tim was a favourite of mine. god knows where that came from
-
I thought it was because every time he crossed the halfway line with THAT look in his eye, Ken Avis screamed “Tora, Tora, TORA!!!” on the PA.
-
Didn't he once perform a martial arts style flying drop kick on an opponent? I always thought that was the reason

And wasn't Barry Miller The BazGod?
yup - amongst others; i've got his (sponsored) shirt, signed "...from Barry "Monkeys" Miller"; this was due to a comment in the Mainstand Paddock during one of his epic, unbeatable displays that he was "like the rock of gibraltar" the original insinuation being that he was rock-solid and dependable - it was, however, taken by less sensible elements in attendance to mean that he was covered in monkeys....
