I have just had a PM from Dave known on here to many as The Vicar telling me he has inoperable Pancreatic cancer and is quite ill.
Not good news but I thought a number of people who post on here and are friends and acquaintances of Dave would probably like to get in touch with him at this bad time for him and his family.
A really committed Rovers and Dons fan who loved the games and has been a fan of both all his life travelling all over the country supporting the teams and being a good player himself when younger it has shocked me to the core.
-
That’s really sad to hear. Terrible disease.

I’ve known dave for years, sat behind him for a few seasons in the south west corner, great bloke, great with the dad jokes. Sad news

A terrible way to end the year for dave and his family. I've always enjoyed some of his insights on the club (did he do the match day announcements one season?) along with the reading the various debates we all get into on the forum. All I can do is offer best wishes
-
Best wishes vicar, we don’t always agree on this forum but it would be a hell of a lot duller without you! Thoughts are with you and I hope you beat the b*st*rd! :boxing:

Hello can I say what a great lot on here in a time of need, I have been encouraged by all your messages so thank you from the bottom of my heart. I has now given me the courage to fight on so head is what they said, and what I plan to do. I had pain in my upper tummy so I went to the doctor, he immediately he sent a email to DRI, I waited and waited for 6 weeks then I received a phone call asking me to go for a colonoscopy, I had that then waited again but3 weeks later I heard nothing, so I rang them up and they said oh yes we have seen that one can I come in in 2 weeks, which if it was cancer was excessive as you have to work very quickly. I went for an MRI scan on the 24th of December, then I got a call to co to the private hospital at DRI and the guy I saw did not seem to care and a bit brash he ended up telling me that I had a cancer of my pancreas, I asked if they can operate he said in a Sturn voice NO, when I asked why he said it was to near a blood vessel, I asked surely there is something to do, he replied WHAT CAN WE DO, so I said something is better than nothing. As this went on he said he will send the scan to Sheffield cancer department to see if they can suggest anything so I am waiting to see what they say.
I have now through all your encouragement to fight this all the way, I am now going to ask them to take away as much of it as they can then give me whatever to try and kill of this flocking ugly thing, surly this or anything is BETTER than nothing. Thank you for reading my experience xxx
-
Make them have it, a mate of mine was given similar news and only one outcome based on a scan, about 2 years ago the specialist he wasn't going to bother seeing saw another outcome and whilst it's not a bed of roses he's just enjoyed another Christmas, all the very best for th future
-
Heartbreaking that someone can treat you like that.the very best to you and your family.
-
Thanks mate I will fight to the end
-
Don't know you personally Vicar but my thoughts are with you, wishing you all the very best.
-
Dave I'm so sorry about your latest
news. It's terrible to hear a mate , and a fellow Rovers fan as distraught as you were on the phone a couple of days ago.
I told you then that you would have a support network around you , like no other, from the start and that would help you deal with this terrible prognosis.
As you can see there is huge support for you and your family such as I have enjoyed and gained strength from on not 1 but 3 occasions. Indeed you yourself kept this forum fully upto date when I was fighting Covid in DRI. It's quite unbelieveable how much strength and mental support you can get just from reading again and again how much you are valued, loved, would be missed etc. from both friends and strangers.
This has always been a forum where all opinions, all troubles can be shared without fear or favour and that's what we will need to be to help get you through this.
Day or night , someone will be here or on the end of a telephone to give you independent advice and encouragement just when you need it .
I know as I and many others have benefitted from just that throughout the years.
Take care Davo and more than that ...STAY IN TOUCH.
-
Heartbreaking that someone can treat you like that.the very best to you and your family.
I think this sums it up for me. It's not hard to show empathy. Keep fighting at it and push them to do everything you can.
-
Don't let it go Dave, put as much pressure on the people responsible for dereliction of duty and the not bothered brigade as possible.
If there is a chance make sure they try to take it. If you are not happy make a diary of dates and times and the names of the people responsible and contact your MP and medical authorities.
-
Thanks Brian mate

Excellent advice selby - make them own your problem too and as has been said, earlier in the thread, there is NO EXCUSE for a lack of empathy with both you and your wife when receiving such devastating news.
Wait to see what the Sheffield oncologists have to say and if necessary seek further reviews of your case .
It's so important to keep any times and dates and with whom properly you might need to refer to them at some future date .
Most of all don't give up but then I know you of all people to be a fighter and that's what you will need to be going forward.

Scary that the attitude there has not changed in 20 years, sounds exactly the same as when my mum was diagnosed the same. Keep fighting Vicar and if you can, try and get your GP to refer you to NCCC in Newcastle (assuming you have transport) they are excellent
-
All the best Dave. Keep fighting. Keep phoning and hassling them and eventually you will get someone who will be able to do something to help you fight this awful disease.
-
You have started off the right way Vicar. As I said above, if anyone can fight this off you can.
-
Thanks Brian mate
Dave,
We had a similar problem when my wife had a biopsy 12 years ago over the Christmas period. It was 9 weeks before we got the result was cancer. A second operation was required by the Oncologist which showed she was still producing cancer cells and was directed on to chemo. Average life expectancy was 4 to 5 years so you can see there can be a good result with luck.
On the whole I was satisfied with NHS and the service they gave but unfortunately she is still a Liverpool supporter first and a Rover second.
My advice Dave is keep asking questions when you have doubt, don't be shy, somehow I know you will.
Best of luck pal
One last comment. My brother had a biopsy of his prostate. He was told he had cancer and the following week he had a call from the hospital saying that in fact he never had cancer. It doesn't inspire you with confidence.
-
They said it was a small shadow then 4 weeks later it was the size of a lemon
-
All the best to you vicar. I don't know the ins and outs of the condition but I'm sure you'll end up in good hands and they'll do what they can for you.
-
Really good luck to you Dave. You have been a 'superfan' of both the Rovers and Dons for as long as I can remember. Stay positive and follow the advice of your friends in this thread.
-
Best wishes to you Vicar, I have always enjoyed reading your posts on here, long may your knowledge and views keep coming. It is brave of you to share the details of the investigations into your illness and something we can all learn from as well.
-
The coin is in the air mate

Thanks mate

The specialist nurses my wife was under complained to the head of department about how she was being treated by a particular consultant, the head honcho looked at it and took her straight back under his wing nobody could make a decision about her care without speaking to him no matter what day or what time. To be fair she was a very complicated case and the whole department had come across her at some point :) in fact half the hospital knew of her :) I'm still friends with some of those that treated her
-
I’m going to ring Macmillan tomorrow to see if they can help me in this at all
-
Dave Just read this, totally shocked mate. If you aren't sure who I am its Ian from Mexborough, used to run the supporters club in Conisbrough. Know we have spent many hours together over the last few years (many) including you driving our mini bus. Yes get advice asap. There used to be an organisation called PALS (patient liaison- not sure if it is still around but if so get in touch quickly). Again keep fighting pal.
-
I will mate thanks. Happy days them remember them well, didn’t Steve Harvey go on the mini bus
-

Yes he was one of our merry band of travellers, remember avoiding the sheep on those country roads when we detoured en-route to Carlisle?
-
Having lived in Sheffield for 29 years I can say their hospitals are far superior to Doncaster. You need to get referred to a cancer specialist. Having moved to Branton 2 years ago, we make sure to keep our NHS contacts in Sheffield. All the very best at fighting this awful disease and thanks for your contributions to this site.

im waiting for Sheffield to get in touch with me mate then I hope the battle will begin hopefully
-
Keep fighting, keep positive.
-
Very sad to hear. Don't give in. My thoughts are with you.
-
Thank you to everyone for their wishes it is a massive help in keeping positive. I have now heard some news from Sheffield, they want me to go and have a camera
-
When my dad was diagnosed with oesophogial cancer it put his name down for a trail which is taking place at Weston Park hospital. The facilities were better there than Donny. He lasted 12 months longer than anyone else diagnosed at Donny at the same time as him. I put it down to the treatment and care he got up the hill in Sheffield.
-
Apologies in advance for any offence but from past experience I wiuldnt trust the DRI to treat a rat
-
To be fair when Mrs Toes had a stroke they were absolutely brilliant at DRI, the quick and effective treatment she received means that now 4 years later you'd never know she'd had one.
I had cancer treatment at Weston Park 10 years ago and they were brilliant too, and obviously I'm still here.
I worked in the NHS for 30 years so I know, if properly staffed and funded, they will do their best, wherever you live.
-
I have not been on here as often as I should, I am sorry to hear about you plight Dave and wish you and your family all the Best Respect to you mate ✊️
-
Hi Vicar only just read this link, I am sorry to hear of your plight. Here is the email address of PALS at DRI. joanne.blockley@nhs.net
All the best.
-
Thanks Bob for that. I have now had some better responses now. Yesterday I went to Sheffield for a pre treatment blood test to see if I’m allergic to chemo if not I will then have a face to face meeting with the specialist on a Friday between 2/3 weeks time once I have had that on the very next Tuesday I will start my treatment once a fortnight for 12 weeks. After that I will have radiotherapy, but the 12 weeks will make me very very vulnerable so will see no one in that timeframe, but as long as I am better I’m ok with that, so thanks everyone
-
Very best of luck Vicar.
-
Thanks BST, it’s going to be a very long journey but I’m determined to get through it. It is only temporary as they can’t operate to get rid of it so although it will or might shrink will always be there
-
Wishing you the best, Vicar, grind through that chemo and come out of the other side fighting fit
-
I will Flo thanks
-
Go for it Dave and keep pushing for the best treatment available.
-
All the best Vicar, if hoola can do it you can.
-
Keep on keeping on, just like the Rovers vicar.
At least you can watch the games in safety and not amiss much.
-
That’s IF I’m well enough mate during the treatment as it’s supposed to make you quite ill isn’t it
-
I think that it can vary a lot vicar. Sometimes it’s better than others from what people who received it told me. Good luck mate, we are all rooting for you.
-
Thanks mate
-
Best of luck with the treatment, pal. Looking forward to hearing some of your crap jokes again at the Keepmoat soon enough. Love to you and Simon and the rest of the family.
-
Thanks mate
-
More on my illness I have a face to face on Friday with the consultant. Then Monday I have my pickling in and Tuesday I start my chemo treatment
-
Very best wishes to you, Vicar. Keep your eyes firmly on the end of this tunnel, don't let it beat you, mate.
-
Good luck vicar and hopefully the Rovers can send you into your treatment on a high. Remember we are all behind you and thinking of you even if you don't feel like posting on here as much for a while. :scarf:
-
I will post as and when I can and update everyone on my progress, if I can’t my wife will and thanks
-
Best of luck with it all Vicar, hope it goes as well as possible for you mate.
-
Best of luck Dave, fight it mate.
-
Keep us updated, mate. We're all here at your shoulder, lad.
-
Hi am can I tell you that I STARTED my treatment yesterday. It is a long day, 9am till 6 but I got there, now that is for 6 treatments over 12 weeks fortunately it went ok
-
Hope that your other sessions go just as well Dave.
-
Good luck Vicar.
-
Fingers crossed for you Vicar.
-
Had a bad day yesterday but I’m sure I will get then most of the time but I’m interested to get as near as I can to get there, if it shrinks enough I’m hoping that they can get it out but if not at least a few years at least. But thanks
-
Stay strong Vicar.

-
Hi all my chemo is not going well as it has made me very ill so my specialist is deferring it for another week to give me some recovery time, then I got a call from him with news about my PET SCAN and he said that the cancer has NOT SPREAD ONE BIT
-
Some good news in there then vicar. Hopefully the Rovers can add to that tomorrow as well. Keep your chin up mate.
-
Well that's reason for positivity then vicar. Hope the specialist can improve the chemo for you.
-
I sure hope so lads, but it gives me the strength to fight on and on
-
Vicar, my wife had chemo and it made her very ill. That was nine years ago and now she's fitter than most people her age, including me.
-
Thanks Bentley mate nice words of encouragement
-
Good luck Vicar. Good to hear there's been no spread.
-
Thanks Billy Mate

Fantastic news Dave , that's a great outcome fella. Look when you do feel fed- up just text me and we will have a natter. I'm here 24/7 and we can even avoid talking about recent games ( you have enough on your plate ) - nuff said.
-
Ok mate thanks
-
Be up for it Dave you are a winner.
-
Brian I heard about a new pioneer treatment yesterday done in Manchester, so I’m going to ask my oncologist about it but I won’t hold my breath mate as I don’t see him till Friday lol
