That's a tough one...If Im honest this is one of those rare occasions were it wouldn't bother me..Mainly because after reading the evidence of his conviction I'm not sure that in truth I agree with it, at best it was all a bit ropey to me...However I was the first to say I wouldn't want King or that keeper who was released from prison so it does smack of double standards I appreciate.....

It's a volatile discussion to get involved in, and depends on your opinion of how solid his conviction was.

Rape is rape, you might say, but like most things there are various degrees of it. It can range from misunderstanding to downright forceful and violent. The length of the Evans' sentence suggests his conviction was based on the lower end of that scale.

It is a cruel world we live in, and is filled with injustice. Even if Evans was to win a fresh appeal, and began playing professionally again, his life would be made intolerable by the crowd.

Personally I'm glad it's not Doncaster Rovers decision to make, and I don't envy Sheffield United's position.

No chance.

Shouldn't be allowed back in football.

I have no problem with someone who has served their time in prison, getting a job and making a living, but I do have a problem with them going (back) into a job where they would be a role model.

So on that basis, it's a no from me.

I don't think you should be able to stop him lawfully plying his trade as a footballer. However, in the same way that the BBC now refuse to show repeats featuring Jimmy Saville and DLT, they should not be forced to broadcast games featuring Evans.

So, I think Evans should be free to sign for any club wishing to give up their tv revenue as a consequence.

In the light what happened in Rotherham  just a few miles from local clubs should people turn a blind eye to it . My opinion  no . Would you expect the people of Rotherham to welcome them back if they are found guilty

No - same argument as Naith.  Dunno all the facts of the case, does anyone here?  How long after release does such a conviction count as spent? Several years if at all I reckon.  Until then or until proven innocent its a no from me.

anyway, didn't Sheffield Utd cancel his contract so why is it their problem now?

So am I. Those saying that they are glad it isn't our problem ought to bear in mind that if the Blunts don't resign him then he'll be on the open market.

On the one hand there's the seriousness of the conviction and the fact that as a pro footballer he's going to be seen as a role model. On the other, once he's served his time he is entitled to be allowed to find employment.

I think Richard Caborn was right though- before he comes back to play for anyone he needs to show remorse.

Sorry- posted on this one because I wondered if there had been a development in the saga. Perhaps the threads could be merged?

No worries.

Evans will have served his time but he was convicted of rape, not fraud or for being in a fight or other less sensitive offences.  Will be be on a sex offenders register? How long until the conviction is "spent"? No for me until such time has elapsed.

Strange situation really. If the judge had jailed Evans for 5 years and banned him from playing professional football for life, there would have been questions about its relevance to the crime.

I understand what Richard Caborn said about this today.  However, he didn't say whether he thought that Evans should be allowed to be employed in any other job (e.g. as a postman) if he didn't show remorse.

Without defending or condoning (I don't know the full facts of the case), is Caborn suggesting that footballers should be treated differently to others and does their public role actually make them different to other mere mortals?  Should it?  I really don't know and I merely ask the question.

As an aside, Caborn did also suggest that Evans' appeal was irrelevant and he should show remorse in any event.  Again, not fully appraised of the facts, I have no idea of the prospects of success of any appeal, but the suggestion seemed to be, even if he is eventually found innocent, he should show remorse for his crime now.

Not for me - both in terms of the baggage he carries and he hasn't played for 3 years.
