Signs for Brum - I’m sure he’ll still do well, one of the classiest defenders I’ve ever seen in a Rovers jersey - wonder if we have a sell on, I doubt it! Or did he run his contract down

He was out of contract this summer so moved on a free. Even if sell on clause, there was no transfer fee involved.

From memory he was owed some kind of money by Rovers, and wrote it off.

Thought it looked a really odd move but didn’t realise that Karanka is now in charge at Birmingham. Obviously a good relationship between them and I’m sure Boro will be disappointed to be losing him.

Seems a top bloke which makes it more of a shame that he has signed for them. Only ever had trouble from two sets of fans in visiting about half of the league sides in the country away. Those sides Birmingham and Millwall. I realise that I should probably not judge clubs by a small number of idiots at clubs but it is what it is.

Fans are disappointed but apparently Warnock wasn't keen on him - as a player, I imagine. Never heard a bad word about him on a personal level.

You might be right but I’d be surprised if that’s the case - he captained them in every one of Warnock’s games in charge last season. I’d think it’s driven by his desire to link up with Karanka again.

He took a course in journalism, so more than likely he’ll be in the media in a few years

Always comes across as a very smart and articulate guy. Delighted he’s had such a good career. I know Boro fans loved him.

He stayed on as a Member of Alliance as well I believe and maybe he still is

Will have to watch see if he wins in the future

For me loved him at left back but he would "put a shift in" (as they say) wherever he was playing

I thought he was shocking at left back to start but a very good centre half

Don’t know where he ended up playing at Boro, but for us he was indeed very good at centre back but somewhat less impressive at left back.

Have to agree with that, i too thought he was poor especially the first season he was with us. Was far better as a centre half.

Didnt Dean Saunders say hes the sort of guy you would want your daughter to bring home, or something like that?

Bloody nice bloke is George.

No Wolf he used to drive me mad with his forays up the channels but then constantly got done with balls back over the top and him trapped nowhere..

When he moved on i didn't think it was a massive loss football wise but it just goes to show what some decent coaching does because he turned into one of the best players in the Championship and is a legend at the Riverside..

So you don't think he got any decent coaching from SOD then ?

Wasnt George a second choice signing to a Left back who chose to go elsewhere? Tom Kennedy is the name I'm thinking off?

Rugby Rover SOD wasn't a expert at everything ....When he was at Rovers Friends positioning was pretty poor...He used to get lots of stick for it and as i recall and as much as he was obviously a likeable lad, there wasn't a massive outcry when he went and he was in and out of the side..I think he went for £100,000 when we were relegated.

He went to Boro who obviously saw something in him, worked with a lot better coaches and turned into a great player
