...who scored in one of this weekend's 1st Round matches also played against us in our first match back in the League in August 2003?

Funnily enough at the weekend when he scored I was just wondering how long he had been around - seems forever.

Brilliant question BST - sorry I am so little fun. :(

Here is a football/social history question in return:

Which of the British towns/cities below have had a football team in the English football league (all nicknames from wikipedia):
Answers added when given:

Copperopolis - Swansea (City, formerly Town)
Cottonopolis - Manchester (City, United, ....)
Ironopolis  - Middlesborough (Boro, Middlesborough Ironopolis)
Linenopolis - Belfast (no teams ever in English FL)
Tinopolis - Llanelli (no teams ever in English FL)
Woolopolis - Bradford (City, Park Avenue,...)

The question arose in my mind when I came across an ex football league team with one the above nicknames as part of the official team name.

I live in Batley so it’s only down the road from me, that’s how I knew the nickname.

Middlesboro had an Ironopolis.

Middlesborough Ironopolis played just one season in the FL - 1893-94. Middlesborough FC entered the League in 1899-1900.

Is Darlington linenopolis?

Good guess,but no TT.

None of the remaining three are in England, and I have lived within 6 miles of each of them. More than three of the 6 have had a football league team in the English leagues.

That means they must be Aberdare Athletic, Merthyr Tydfil and Wrexham but I'm not sure how any of them fit those descriptions.

Think you may have misunderstood my comment Glyn. More than three (already identified) of the 6 have or have had a football league team in England, but not all 6. Also there are more countries than England and Wales that are British. Apologies if I was not clear.

P.S. Getting misty eyed about those Welsh teams you named, but none have the nicknames above.

I would hazard a guess that Linenopolis is Belfast.

Excellent TRB. Never any teams from here in the football league

One of the other two is nearly impossible, but is well known by egg-chasers of a certain age.

Excellent Wilts, just the difficult one to go.

Scene of the All Blacks greatest humiliation ever.

Erm....your question says former teams in the English Football League..? There's only ever been English and Welsh teams in the English Football League.

Brilliant Drover

In 1972 the club Rugby team Llanelli beat a pretty well full strength All-Blacks team 9-3 (immortalised by a song by Max Boyce called '9-3'). 26000 were there, which was more than the population at the time (it is now 35000). Llanelli is 12 miles west of Swansea, and at the midpoint is Gorseinon where I lived as a child.

Apologies again if I was not clear Glyn. The original question was which of these British towns/cities has or has had a English FL team - I was meaning that some but not all 6 have had one. Hence Belfast and Llanelli. Silly phrased question really, I was trying to get all of the ****opolis places into the question.
