I cant think of a better player we have lost to our own doing. Fantastic footballer. Anyone think of any better? I am nearly 30 so surely there are some before my time?
-
He wasn’t that great when he left us. Very inconsistent, rare end product. He’s improved loads.
And it wasn’t our doing was it?
-
I understand he and Dickov really didnt get on. He was always great but played in a very hard league in a crap, badly managed team.
-
It seemed criminal that he wasn't selected more at Rovers. He was a very good player before he signed for us and after he left. It would be a strange opinion to say he wasn't a good player when with us.
-
I always rated Duffy.
I first noticed him when he was playing for Scunny and was delighted when we got him.
I also was surprised that he didn’t get more games for us, he was one of the few players who could turn a game our way with some good individual skill.
-
Really good player mismanaged by Dickov who I seem to remember left him out when fit & didn't know where to play him when he did. Tony Woodcock was the best player we had & let go when on loan to us, around 20k we could have signed him for. Keep your age to yourself StocksArmy, making me feel old.
-
Mike Jeffery was another one but that was due to financial reasons. He single handedly changed us out of all recognition when he played for us and I would have loved to have seen us build a team around him.

He was relatively poor for Rovers - or very inconsistent at least.
Then again, that was probably the Dickov effect!
-
I too was delighted when we signed him and he’s done well since he left but he just didn’t really do it for us. According to Wikipedia he made 36 appearances in his one season for us - it’s not like he never had a chance, he just never took it.
-
I think some people should take off their rose tinted glasses where Mark Duffy is concerned, when he played for Scunny against us he was the best player on the pitch, but when wearing a red and white hooped shirt he was distinctive average. He’s form for the Blades is so so, most players have good and bad periods of form , but he’s not in the class of Stock,Wellans,Green,Coppinger or Kane

All down to opinions . I rate Kiwomya and McCullough but what do I know ?

Not a lot if you rate Kiwomya.

Absolute waste of space for us when we needed him. But that might have been a managerial issue.
Regarding the OP. Brian Deane has to be the best player we ever let go.
And I thought he was w**k when we sold him.
-
Nowhere near as good as Wellens
-
We'll have to agree to disagree on Brian Deane, Billy. The best junior player by a country mile (and we had some good ones back then) and was starting to show glimpses of his worth when he eventually made if into the first team.
I was absolutely mortified when we sold him for an absolute pittance.
-
He was very good in L1 and didn’t adapt to the championship. Looks good for Sheffield United in the championship though.
-
He’s doing it week in week out for probably the best side in the championship.
He was inconsistent for us, but on his day he was very good

At what?
Totally different types of player.
Wellens couldn’t go past a man like Duffy could but Duffy couldn’t dominate like Wellens could.
-
I loved Duffy!
-
Was probably the first player we signed to take Coppingers place because of his age, and was not as good as our midfielders at that time, especially Copps.
A bit of a one trick pony when going past players and regularly lost the ball. Now he looks a better player well done to him.
Agree about Brian Dean Alan and can remember having heated discussions with some mates who didn't rate him.

What has Steve Evens got to do with this thread? 😉

I don't think it's him he's at odds with.

Tell me what you've seen that makes you actually rate him then?

Am I right in thinking that while Duffy was with us we also had Copps, Cotterill, Forrester, and Bennett? Quite a lot of competition. If you had a poor game there was a choice of replacements, so Duffy, Forrester and Bennett were all in and out of the team.

To this very day, I cannot get my head around Billy Bremmner sending Daryl Pugh to Huddersfield in a swap deal for Terry Austin. Austin was utter, utter garbage whilst Pugh was a Welsh under 21 player.
-
Terry Austin !!!!!!!!! Now he was garbage

I think we needed a goal scorer (although the real problem was our defence was gash) and before he joined us Tracy had a decent track record. But he was awful and looked like he couldn't be arsed.
The following season we brought in a proper professional up front in Ernie Moss and he did a great job for us.

He was Curtis Main, & some.

I loved terry Austin

I was pretty excited with the Duffy and Forrester double signing. Always liked Duffy as a player but never rated Forrester. Shame he was managed by a totally incompetent manager
