The Wage Bill
« on October 29, 2011, 09:47:31 am by Muttley »
I thought I'd have a stab at where all the wage bill goes and what we could afford if we halved it.

Assuming
- the wage bill is £8m pa as stated, that works out at approx £154k per week,
- this only relates to the 1st team squad as listed on the OS (ie youth team players, manager, coaching staff and admin are excluded and the directors don't take a salary(?))
- the oft-quoted £10k pw for Sharp is correct (I've used this as an upper limit and benchmark

Player CurrentFuture?
Neil Sullivan 82
James O'Connor 52
George Friend 62
Shelton Martis 52
Richard Naylor 62
James Chambers 52
Martin Woods 52
Brian Stock 82
Chris Brown 52
Billy Sharp 1010
Adam Lockwood 52
James Hayter 72
Ryan Mason 32
Tommy Spurr 52
Mark Wilson 52
John Oster 82
Giles Barnes 62
Simon Gillett 62
Jon Parkin 02
Oscar Radford 32
Sam Hird 62
Dean Shiels (on loan to Killie  ) 52
Kyle Bennett 52
Mustapha Dumbuya 52
James Baxendale 22
James Coppinger 72
Milan Lalkovic (on loan from Chelsea  )02
Rachid Bouhenna 52
Paul Keegan 42
Herita Ilunga 22
Chris Kirkland(on loan from Wigan  ) 02
Gary Woods 52
Eddie Wilding 22
Jordan Ball 22
Pascal Chimbonda 22
Total16378

Admittedly I've got no inside knowledge and I might be some way off on some of these but the total seems to stack up (again with the assumptions I've made above).

What is interesting, to me anyway, is that if you want to keep the same size squad and reduce the wage bill to £4m pa ie £76k pw then everybody has to be on WM's magical £2k pw (I've allowed us the small luxury of keeping Sharp on at £10k pw).

(Obviously the future players wouldn't be the ones listed above).

Of course, it the £8m includes the manager etc, then future looks even harder to achieve.

Not sure what you're trying to imply, care to elaborate?

The maths seems fairly clear to me - if you want a 35 man squad and a wage bill of £4m pa then you can only pay £2k pw.

I'd suggest that would mean you can only employ players that aren't Championship standard or you have to fill your squad with loanees etc.

Obviously there's a limit to how many loans you have/play, so the alternative scenario is that you have a vastly reduced squad and rely on a high turnover of loanees.
