I'm pretty sure Rotherham had points deducted a couple of years ago. Also there was an instance (can't remember the club) where they had points deducted from last season's total after the season had finished.

Details of the Rotherham one.

Bury was the club in question.

In this case I can kind of understand why a fine was appropriate because the error was not a registration issue but over international clearance.

The issue is complex because it would be assumed that the player received international clearance when he returned to his parent club. Also when the loan club plays in an English league you would think international clearance wasn't necessary.

I dare say a lot of club secretaries are thinking "there but for the grace of God..."

I knew there was a similar case before. Jermaine Darlington and AFC Wimbledon (in their Ryman League days). Darlington signed from Cardiff and they failed to gain international clearance (presumably because Cardiff play in the English pyramid).

They were docked 18 points by the League but the FA reduced it to 3 on appeal.

While it is dangerous to regard the rulings of football bodies and tribunals as setting precedents (in the manner of Case Law) this suggests that an error over clearance is not seen to be as serious as a registration error.

This happened in League Two to them a few years ago, think they were deducted a point in the end but could be wrong.

For me it is just an administration error, teams shouldn't lose points for it, a fine is enough, with the threat of losing points if it happens again.

Seems the FA of Wales is causing a number of problems for English clubs over registration matters.
