What makes a good football manager?

 I believe the most important attribute of a manager is a strong character who provides inspirational leadership (Clough).

This type of manager often requires an assistant who specialises more in the coaching side of things (Taylor).

It is of prime importance that the Latter isn't given the role of the former.

And vice-versa!

That was a strange combination. Sean would have been a much more convincing manager had he been able to comunicate better. RO'K was a much better talker.
Perhaps Sean would make a far better assistant than a manager.

No,he needs to build his structures and ethos, that wouldn't happen if he weren't the manager.

Come to think of it there are examples of other top class managers who don't come over as strong leaders but have a more thoughtful approach.

I could be wrong but Arsene Wenger, Bob Paisley, Roy Hodgson, Steve Clarke, Chris Houghton and Bobby Robson would seem to fit that category.

Those you mention must have strong enough characters to provide inspirational leadership, because they have done! Strong leaders don't have to be loud mouths! They should be good communicators though.

I agree with that, you would expect a decent manager to be a good communicator.

And have a fundamental understanding of the game be a good tactician.

And have an understanding of people.

Would he need to have had a career playing professional football though?

Not necessarily.  Lawrie McMenemy and  Roy Hodgson to name but two never played professional football.
