The Withdean. Not fit for purpose at all, unless you've taken a pair of binoculars and an umbrella.

Never liked Hartlepool, no room for your legs, crap view.

Nuneaton, crap view, bouncers as stewards.

Have to agree with you on Nuneaton. Never had the displeasure of going to Hartlepool.

The Withdean, the old MK Dons ground was crap, we sat in temporary stand - no roof and no atmosphere.

York city was a disgrace. The away end 'toilet' was six inch deep in urine, and no cubicles if you were unfortunate enough to want a crap.
Mind you I think they might have got away with it legally, claiming the whole ground was one big shithouse.

Harrison Park, went there with white trainers on, which were black at the end of the game, ash bank for the away end, a right shithole.     :(

Workington Town, the floorboards had 2ft holes in them.

Hartlepool is OK, and the away end has the gorgeous Lawrence in it

Rotherham united. More of a duty than a pleasure visiting there.
The annual visit to the doctors to top up the innoculations prior to visiting there was more of a gratifying experience rather that a happy one.
There was much more to the occasion than seeing Rovers pick up three easy points, the grateful faces of the locals opening their food parcels was much more important.
Travelling to such places carrying out vital missionary work far exceeded the discomfort of spending a couple of hours in that Millmoor hovel.

The Crabble was pretty poor, however at least it had a bar/portacabin! Must have been pretty dire at the good old Belle Vue for away fans \"housed\" in the Rosso end mid winter!

Top Field - Hitchin Town. Absolute death trap of a ground with rotten wooden terracing on two sides.
In the FL, Layer Road was an absolute disgrace.

Shocking call Rigo!

Farnborough Town! Either that or the San Siro. (the south London version of course). Actually, thinking some more, Hayes was pretty shit as well.

Just got me thinking. How many grounds have you been to that are no longer in use ? (Other than Belle Vue)

Fellows Park Walsall
Seamer Road Scarborough
The Shay Halifax ?
Boothferry Park
Leeds Road
Millmoor
County Ground Northampton
Drill Field Northwich

I'm sure many of you have a longer list and have possibly done old AND new.

Mmmm, interesting question. I've done 188 different grounds with Rovers, seen them at all of the above plus The Den, Roker Park, Ayresome Park, Highbury, Ninian Park, Vetch Field, Feethams, and probably a load more ex-league that I cant remember at the moment. Got a complete chronological list at home, so I'll have a nosy when I get home.

BobG's right on his collective summary. Hayes and Welling have got to be up there with the best (worst) but I'd raise the bet with Ossett Town, Halesowen or Sutton United. Sometimes the weather, state of mind, journey and performance can have a huge effect on your view of the ground - actually you're right it's Welling United. Absolutely bloody shite.

At least at Welling you got a Christmas Card! However, it remains the only ground I've been to (following the Rovers)where I've seen a man take his dog!

In seating, the worst are: Leeds, Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday - no legroom whatsoever.

I'll raise your worst seating legroom with Kenilworth Road, Luton.

it wasnt too great getting hammered by blackpool while getting soaked in their \"new ground\" while they all sat in luxury, they had a roof and everything in the home end

While on the subject of animals, I seem to remember when I was about 14, a man selling programmes in the main stand at BV, used to have a rat in his coat   Now surely I didnt dream this??? I'm sure sammy chung was manager at the time, and as a young girl, I remember not being too pleased when I saw it for the first time.  Go on, someones gonna tell me it was a ferret or something, but i'm pretty sure it was a rat.  Either that or I'm going crazy on the approach to 30...old age???

Luton is a ghastly place- the town as well as the ground. Anyone who comes out with the \"it's grim up north\" stuff should have to spend a week in Luton.

Newport's Somerton Park was something else. I couldn't believe how bad it was when I went there in the mid-80s. The site is now covered with a housing estate, as I noted when I travelled back on the train from Cardiff the other week.

Standing on what appeared to be wet sand at The Shay was an interesting experience. They've tarted it up quite a bit now.

Halifax (or rather their successors) still play at the Shay. I have been to all these, plus The Old Showground, Highfield Road, Sealand Road, Plough Lane, Watling Street, Layer Road and several more.

I've even stood on the pitch at Park Avenue, although I never saw a game there.

Hayes - poor terrace, two sheds either side & we got locked down one end of the ground in the 2nd half; no toilets, no snack bar.

Leek Town - Flood lights didn't reach the middle of the park.

Luton. Dear sweet Jesus, what a God-awful place. If the Rooskies had seen that place in the 80s, it would have given renewed hope that Capitalism was as fundamentally flawed as Marx predicted.

Anyone over the age of 40 remember driving down past Luton on the M1 in the 80s - there's a railway bridge over the motorway, which used to have grafitti saying \"Welcome to a Town Called Malice.\"

in the interests of fairness, obv's away end in its full uncovered security fence glory must have been a pretty poor place to watch a game

Having been to Hayes last December, I didn't think it was all that bad. It's very similar to a lot of Conference North/South grounds and is better than the likes of Stafford, Maidenhead, etc.

The Rockingham Triangle at Corby is an absolute dump as well, and definately deserves a mention in this thread.

Not bad for the price you paid to get in though you cheapskate lol.

I think Luton should be preserved as a Listed building so that everyone can see what old fashioned grounds used to be like.

I think it is fairly unique the ways it's surrounded by the houses and even have to go 'through' the houses to get in !

Red Baron: who used to play at Watling Street then? I can't for the life of me remember that one.

Somerton park? An right experience that was. But I liked, and like, the place. On my only visist there, a frosty Friday night, Rovers won 3-2 and Peter Kitchen scored the best goal I have ever, and will ever, see. (\"Oh God! He's off on that subject again\" Dutch Uncle will say :) ) Great ground for me Somerton Park :)

Cheers

Millmoor and don valley are as bad as each other, i never liked saltergate either, kennilworth road was a dump so was preistfield with the scaffolding. Billingham synthonia when we played in a preseason friendly was a field with a stand at one side, exeters away end wasnt great. the worst i would have to say was possibly boston or york for me.

Watling Street was actually Dartford's ground, but Maidstone played there while they were in the League. Like Somerton Park it is now a housing estate.

I saw us win 1-0 there in 1990-91. I think Mark Rankine scored.

Hayes, yes that was a shithole.  The only blessing about Roots Hall was it had the little cafe bar where they did pies n tea at half time. Seating was cramped.
