Title: Cardiff City vs Doncaster Rovers
Post by: VivaRovers on August 20, 2010, 11:52:01 am
Thought I'd start this match thread seen as the match preview for this game is now up on Viva Rovers (http://vivarovers.wordpress.com/2010/08/20/this-man-craig-cardiff-city-preview/). If you're not going to the match and you are a Twitter user Viva Rovers will be attempting to bring live updates of the game too, just follow @vivarovers on Twitter, or keep checking the Twitter Updates box on our website.

Dave Penney's going to be the expert summariser on Radio Sheffield tomorrow.

Just been interviewed and his first sentence started \"To be fair...\"

Bless him, hasn't changed.

He's looking forward to a cracking game of football and, so are we !

Let's be positive. Copps starts where he left off after coming on v Bristol. Driving runs in to the heart of their defence. Thomas and JOC to keep em out at the back.

1-2 Rovers. Sharp and a winner from Thomas.

Rovers last the Football League show. 3 mins with 2 1/2 mins devoted to Bellamy's debut.

Team news. As expected Thomas in for Martis.

Copps starts and Shiels drops to bench.

Not convinced with defence with Locky and Thomas in the middle. Thought they may have gone with a back 3/5 to counter pace.

Anyway, come on you red and white wizzards !

As is common with Rovers once we go behind, we capitulate and go on to lose.

The signs were there v Bristol last week when they were unlucky not to extend their lead before we got a last gasp equaliser....worrying times defensively.

Can we start a campaign to have the Welsh clubs put in the League of Wales please?  In return, we'll take Berwick Rangers back from Scotland. :)

we certainly have to learn. SOD talked about being brave and in that first 5 minutes of the second half, same as last week, we come out all limp wristed.

If the players don't respond, then SOD has to be brave himself with his subs.

I was always worried about pace, and I'm surprised he went with Locky and Thomas as a pairing. If he insists on playing JOC in his preferred position then Hird would have been a better choice IMO.

Of course it's disppointing to lose and it sounds from player as though we have hardly created a serious effort and it is not a typical Rovers performance.

Not many teams will take points away at Cardiff, so as the previous poster suggests, let's just move on and seriously look forward to the return of Oster and many happiier Saturdays this season.

Cardiff are shaping already as Promotion certainties. Their wage bill for bellamy alone is way above our capability, so we somtimes need to understand what we are and where we are and be content with that.

It all beats days at Hednesford and Gravesend.

Last week we looked very weak defensively, not sure of the way forward to be honest, it doesn't matter who we play Jimmy is the only consistantly good player. One player in defence is no good in this league, but what can we do.

Every bloody time we lose - you lot make it sound we are hopeless FFS

Why can you lot not just except that on paper they were miles better and so it proved.

Why do you have to pull all the players to pieces ???

We need to sign a Mills/Shackell type centre back. I'm sorry but the likes of Lockwood and Martis are not not the answer. I've not seen enough of Thomas to pass judgement.
I reckon we need another left back aswell.

A back 5 would shore things up better.

Hopefully, with Chambers back in for Friend, so until we unearth a good pacey centre half, then JOC needs to drop in.

If that means giving Dumbuya a licence to go forward then that is better than relying on him purely as a defensive full back in a flat back 4.

There wont be many parting with £28 for the Hull game now!
Same old though, promising start to the game, to fall off the wagon in the second half.

Oh well.

have to agree norfolk.the moaning at every defeat and poor performance makes me sick.
cardiff will prove to be a top team this season.the front three they have plus burke will im sure lead them to promotion.we on the other hand are not rubbish and not brilliant.after every defeat all you see on here is a list of players who are rubbish and need replacing.

There's a difference between moaning and pointing out where we are weak.

We are weak defensively, that is obvious. If all we did was applaud the efforts every game without highlighting areas for improvement, life on the forum owuld be very dull.

Who said anything about not being behind the team?
I pointed out against Preston we looked weak at the back.

On the flip side we have an excellent midfield.

Like I said, what's the point in a forum if we can't discuss performances and the team as a whole?

Can't you point out that we've got a weak defence, and get behind the team at the same time? I wasn't aware of that one.

I wouldn't have found something to moan about. There is a big difference between being negative and being honest!

fair point mate.but in this thread ive seen certain players being labelled a liability, donkeys, useless, need replacing, hardly true is it and not supportive of the guys in question at all. kneejerk reactions to losing to a top top team.

I've seen the word liability, but not useless, donkeys or need replacing. Care to point them out?

Even so, maybe you should step back and consider they might be right! I don't mind people trying to be upbeat, as people respond in different ways, but it winds me up when people try to make out that all is rosy in the garden, and try to belittle the realists who point out some of the harsh truths.

Can you please highlight where any person has called a player a liability, a donkey or useless?

I pointed out that certain players are not the answer to our defensive issue's. As back up/squad players, i'd have them here all day long to come in every now and then and do a job, but we are desperately missing a commanding presence at the back (ie a Mills or Shackell).

Were the same defence playing a team of world beaters last week?

I hear what your saying, but we are still lacking at the back.
We need that commanding figure there.

But, I have every confidence we'll be safe again this season.

it needs improving on todays evidence yes.
but on the previous 2 games and 2 friendlys with wendys and wba.no
give em a chance.
i have a feeling that cardiff would have bashed most teams today with all the euphoria over bellamy.

Apart from the goal when the marking was non existant!

Martis was really good when he was on loan with us, and I think its more of a confidence thing with him.

Lockwood is decent back up.

Hird as above

Thomas - not seen enough to comment, although reports today suggest he was poor.

Friend - seems to have been a weak link so far. I'm sure SOD will work his magic though. I'd prefer Chambers in however.

I think a Mills/Shackell type centre back will sure up the defence, and make it more organised as a whole.

Lets face it though, if we were brilliant in every department we would be topping the league.

im sure the return of chambers and jimmy moving to cb will see us fine.also in any team the midfield and to a certain extent the 2 wide strikers we use in 4-3-3 have a big responsibility to protect the back 4 when we havent got the ball.

the goal against bristol was from a set piece.we had all outfield players bar billy back defending it.so not completley a reflection solely on the back 4 players.

No one. Not Mr Frost, or me have been ripping in to the team. If you can'r debate the strengths and weaknesses what's the point in having a forum where you can discuss these issues.

Everyone has their opinion and it's good to air them.

Even you Norfolk, Martis and Thomas at the back ? Mmmmm, I've thought about that for 2 mins and I've decided I'm right. Martis and Thomas are unlikely to be the best combination.

Rare as rocking horse muck do you have big centre forwards anymore. Certainly you need to combat any aeriel threat but pace  passing and crosses are the killers. That's why you need a footballing centre half to compliment the big guy.

As most have indicated, JOC returning to CB would help.

Based on today's performance, I'd never play Locky and Thomas together again. Doesn't matter if you play Cardiff or Carmarthen, they're defending today was utterly appalling. Martis' is better than the pair of them on his day, he just isn't on form at the minute.

Norfolk, ruby, what do you expect from the fans when we perform like we did today and get a 4-0 hiding? Nobody has come out and claimed it's the end of the world or that we're going down, or that the manager and players need sacking etc. All people have done is point out quite rightly where we are going wrong, and discuss areas where we are weak.

I'd much rather read a thread discussing these things than seeing a line of posts that just say 'oh well, in SOD we trust. All the players are wonderful. RTID.'

Excellent report Glen.
As you stated, the first half was even, with chances to both sides, which resulted in both keepers being called upon. Bothroyd's first goal was certainly fortunate, with the ball falling very kindly for him. The second goal was poor defending, as the cross was put in far too easily, and Bothroyd was able to pick his spot unopposed. Lockwood will have been disappointed with the third. As you stated, he was almost static, as the ball soared over him to set Burke clear. The fourth, I actually missed, as I looked away at the wrong moment, only to hear the roar when the ball hit the net.
In summary, we matched a very good Cardiff side for most of the first half, and up until the first goal, actually looked marginally more likely to score. The second goal was the killer though, as it not only gave Cardiff a two-goal lead, but also the confidence to run at our defence more often. So, a 4-0 defeat, but I am not too despondant, as Cardiff will certainly be a top six team come May. They are as strong in attack most premiership teams, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them score 80+ goals this season.
