Title: When does a Big Club...
Post by: BillyStubbsTears on April 30, 2011, 06:44:46 pm
...become a smaller club?

Having secured another year at this level, it would be unpleasant and churlish to pour salt in others' wounds.

But then I'm an unpleasant and churlish man so here goes.

I've been musing on the common assumption that our Sheffield cousins are \"Big Clubs\". I winder how you assess that. It can't be history alone, otherwise Preston, Bury, Huddersfield and Royal Engineers would be Big Clubs still. Clearly after decades of under achievement, a \"Big Club\" can become more of an irrelevance.

And for Big Clubs, the Dee Dahs haven't half underachieved. By the end of next season, Sheff Weds will have spent:
15 of the last 40 years in Tier 1,
16 in Tier 2
9 in Tier 3

Sheffield Utd will have spent
9 season in Tier 1
24 in Tier 2
6 in Tier 3
1 in Tier 4

Big clubs?

Good question BST.  And a few interesting comparisons.

Brentford were one of the top clubs in London up until WWII, only one other team - Arsenal - were bigger.  Fast forward to the 60's and they're playing us in Div 4.  Fast forward to today and you'd be sectioned if you categorised them as one of the top two London clubs.

It's not impossible that the Sheffield of Wednesday and United could go the same way as the Bradford of Park Avenue and City.
