Title: Pre-war Doncaster lineup
Post by: JohnHUFC on July 30, 2011, 09:59:40 am
Hi there, Hartlepool fan here.  I've been directed to this board by another Rovers fan who reckons somebody on here might be able to help me.

For the last few years I've been working on a database/website centred around my club. I'm almost at the end of the laborious task of gathering all the opposition lineups and scorers. Just sorting out a few odds and ends. I have a Doncaster lineup from 1928/29 with a mistake in it.

Here's what I have...

Football League Division Three (North)
3rd November 1928
Hartlepools United 2 (Dobell, T Mordue) Doncaster Rovers 2 (T Keetley 2)

Doncaster Team
1. John Maughan
2. JACK BUCKLEY
3. Joe Bowman
4. Ben Underwood
5. JACK BUCKLEY
6. Fred Emery
7. Tommy Tippett
8. Frank Keetley
9. Tom Keetley
10. Pat McConnell
11. Tommy Atkin

Now I know that there were not two Jack Buckleys at Doncaster in 1928/29 so I guess one of them is a typo. Would anyone happen to have a lineup for that game?

Any help much appreciated.

Best wishes
John Phillips

PS, this is the Doncaster page on my site

Doncaster Rovers vs HUFC (http://www.inthemadcrowd.co.uk/cgi-bin/itmc_view_team.asp?viewop=1&oid=40)

Fixing this one error will complete the Rovers lineups and scorers from all 97 meetings between our clubs

Number 7 sounds like Bob the Builder's digger.

That really is a labour of love, John.  Congratulations.

However, I've spotted another mistake.  Peter Beardsley never played for us. It appears to be a popular myth stemming from the fact we signed CHRIS Beardsley, but a number of media outlets reported it as Peter.  FLJs hard at work, there.

Nice one Filo, thanks very much.  John (Jock) Morgan.  I had a feeling it might have been him as he played at centre half in the other game that season and seems to have been a regular.

Tommy Tippett didn't do a lot at Rovers but he did once score six times for Rochdale when they beat us 8-2 at our place.

Rob, thanks for clearing up the Beardsley thing.  I've deleted Doncaster from Peter's list of clubs.

Thanks for the help everyone.  Best wishes for the season, you look to have a more than useful squad.

John

Congratulations on a fantastic site John - absolutely top notch

I can confirm Filo's answer and provide the first name - the no 5 was John Morgan

P.S. Good luck for the upcoming season

I've been compiling a list of Donny players who have played more than 100 games for us. Have all post war, but pre war only have Tom Keetley, Fred Emery, Jock Morgan, Syd Bycroft and Bobby McFarlane. Am sure there's lots more, not expecting anyone to go thumbing through games, but maybe someone has an easy to access list, or can pass me names to follow up. Ta :)
