Title: Can I just take you through our Security questions
Post by: Donnywolf on January 29, 2012, 06:27:00 pm
... anybody else think like me or better still anyone know a good riposte

I got a call today from my Online Bookmaker (though for the pruposes of this it could be my Banks Gas Board etc) and he said he had a \"special offer\" for me and then they always launch into the spiel.

I need to take you through security ... Full name DOB Favourite Pets name etc before you get anywhere BUT it has always foxed me ... they know who I am but I can never be sure who they are

Has anyone on here taken them through security to establish who they are ?

I often do just to wind them up when asked \"Can we just confirm some details what is your dob\" (or whatever) I just turn round and tell them ok tell me and I'll confirm it.

It actually winds me up a bit if they want you to confirm something, they should tell you and you confirm or deny.

What they are actually doing is asking you to tell them, how do you know you are not giving info out to a scammer especially if theyve called you.

I've had some entertaining conversations doing that

I had a \"network security consultant\" firm call me at work a few years ago, and ask very generic questions about our network.  I was happy to answer them as they gave nothing away about our security.  When we got to the end he said they would publish all the responses on their website, and those who responded would get access to a members only section, with greater granularity of data.  All I had to give him to set it up was my email address and mother maiden name as they would use this as the password.  Told him to get f%ked right off.

Well a few years ago my 88 year old Dad rang the gas board up  and asked where his bill was because it was 2 days late........and I kid you not

I always do it if Halifax ring me. I ask them to state my post code, DOB and house number. I have never had a positive response cos they often sound confused and then try to tell me that's not how it works. Then we agree to end the call and send anything important through the post.

There SHOULD be a system set up where we set up a password that ONLY us and banks etc know, then when they give the correct security question to us, we can answer there's!

I tell you something else, it's surprising how fewer marketing/commercial calls you actually get after so long of doing it! Win-Win situation to be honest!

It's the law unfortunately. If a company you have a service with, bank, utilities etc need to call you for any reason, by law and DPA you have to confirm your details.

as I pointed out earlier to confirm is to confirm the details. These companys are ASKING for you to TELL them your details.

Telling them is not confirming, confirming is them telling you, and you either agreeing the details are correct or telling them thats a load of tosh

:)

That isn't how DPA works though. They cannot volunteer any information, so you do have to tell them the information. Maybe the way they are asking it is incorrect, but what they are doing is in fact how it should be done.
