Title: SOD & Forest
Post by: mattco on April 01, 2012, 05:26:38 pm
Is it just coincidence that Forest start playing proper football and getting results after SOD joined as assistant to their hopeless manager?

He's only the first team coach, judge him next season when he's their manager

He'll be a success btw.

Just watched the 12 min highlights of the game against Palace and apart from one move, I wouldn't say its very SOD like at all. Mainly long ball.

Probably not a coincidence no, but I don't think they're playing good football. Certainly not against us they didn't anyway

Or could it co-incide with the return of Blackstock, who IMO is the best striker in the Championship and hugely important to them?

With the players Forest have it was inevitable they would string a result or three together sooner or later. I dont think for one minute you can see Forest play and see OD influence anywhere.( unless they suddenly play with 5 across midfield and no wide men).

Forest points this season before SOD, 24 from 27 games (0.88 per game), 21 goals scored (0.77 per game), 44 conceded (1.63 per game).

Forest points since SOD joined, 19 from 14 (1.36 per game), 22 goals scored (1.57 per game), 15 conceded (1.07 per game).

DRFC under SOD ( Last 33 games). 29 points = 0.88 ppg. 37 goals scored = 1.12gpg 62 scored against =1.88 gcpg.

Under Saunders ( 33 games ) 31 points = 0.94 ppg. 33 goals scored = 1.0 gpg. 57 scored against 1.73 gcpg.

Sort of puts Dean at least on par with SOD dont you think.

It actually looks better for DS if you take SOD last 25 and Dean first 25, by a good margin, but being fair DS has had 33 games so likewise those games afforded to SOD too.

Let's give credit where credit is due. Before SOD went there they were looking likely to be relegated. Now there is no danger of that. It's blindingly obvious that this quick turnaround in fortunes is totally down to the expertise of SOD.

I know all you that wanted him out will find this an uncomfortable truth but the facts speak for themselves.

Id say its fair that you use 33 games each.

Im guessing that that results in approx the same amount of games that each manager had Billy Sharp at their disposal, of course SOD never had the 'Premiership Superstars' to utilise.

As it turns out that was a fairly equal proportion for both SOD and Saunders. Of 33 games Saunders had him 20 games, SOD 15.

SOD had \"Superstars\" of his own didnt he.

Hell i must need eyes testing, SOD stats nothing like i first stated.

SOD. ( last 33 games ) points 23 = 0.70 ppg. goals scored 28 0.85  gpg. Conceded goals 61 = 1.85 gpg.

Under Saunders ( 33 games ) 31 points = 0.94 ppg. 33 goals scored = 1.0 gpg. 57 scored against 1.73 gcpg.

And thats with SOD equivelent Superstars / Loans/ Shopwindow signings.

Moussa, Kilgallon,Euell,Thomas,Martis,Healey,Payne,Burge,Souza, Joe Mills.

Why don`t you give it a rest, go to the remaining home games and demonstrate to JR you want a football team in Doncaster?

Unless there is some out of the blue change at the club thats sees McKay leave Doncaster Rovers this season (however he leaves) then that wont be happening i'm afraid.

I tell you what, i have a few grand spare that says SOD will never manage in the premiership. I have a feeling he wont manage in championship( again ) either, but that is tempered with his current location as they may well see him as a viable option.

A few grand spare? You must be as successful as Madmick!!

SO'D will 100% manage in the premiership one day. So will Paul Tisdale.

I'm of the belief that SOD has contributed greatly to forest's turn in fortunes.

John Ryan continuously said that SOD was greatest on the training pitch, and his training methods are mostly mentally, he makes the players think. He never actually spent time on passing the ball around, it was always making the players make the right pass at the right time. When you compare that to Cotterills management they compliment each other and have arguably one of the best set ups in the country right now.

All of us valued SOD very highly, whether you liked him or not, think about the situation; one of the highest rated manager of the lower leagues (and in some people's opinion the Championship) is working as a coach at a Championship team. Even John Ryan wrote (although he sacked him the next day) that he didn't think there was a better manager around. It took many people by surprise when he joined Cotterill but can you name a better first team coach?

I had to smile on Saturday when Jeff Stelling said that Forest look safe now and it looks like Cotterill has turned it round!!

Or,

You could put those 33 games under Saunders with all the players he's wanted at the club and available against 33 games when Sean had all his players that he wanted and available.

However, it all does seem pointless
