I used to be a miner. I have been to Australia several times and and lived there temporarily (thus missing the first game at KM and Cardiff millennium). I would love to live there permanently. But work down the pit again? Ney feckin' chance mate..

That article is referring to the NSW coalfields, which are in the Hunter Valley near Newcastle (Cessnock, Maitland), about a hundred miles north of Sydney.  Most if not all of that is opencast pits, as a quick look on Google Maps will show.  There's plenty more work available elsewhere as well, particularly in opencast projects in the Western Australian desert, mining minerals and precious metals rather than coal, with companies like BHP Billiton and Hammersley Iron.  Kalgoorlie is the main centre in WA but there are a lot of other projects in more remote locations, often where they'll fly you in and out from a major city of your choice.  There is also stuff available in Queensland up around Mount Isa, but currently the money in WA tends to be a bit better.  You're looking at an average salary of around AUD$200k (£125,000) p.a. before tax, "hard yakka but good coin".  If you've got the skills/experience any company will sponsor you to get you a temporary residence visa initially, which after a period you can convert into permanent residency (and eventually dual nationality, if you wanted to), for those looking to emigrate to Australia long-term.
