Title: Indian Telephone PC scam
Post by: River Don on July 20, 2012, 11:27:38 am
I've just had another one of these tw*ts on trying to scam me, this is third time it's happened now.

So far my technique is play dumb, keep asking them questions about who they are, what their name is and keep them spending money on the phone call for as long as possible. Assuming they have to pay a phone bill, judging by the accent they always seem to be of Indian origin so perhaps it's an international call? Or perhaps they pay nothing anyway. At least it wastes their time.

After I've drawn it out as long as possible and it's becoming clear I know what they're up to, I give them some verbal abuse until they hang up.

I just wondered is there anyway of discovering the number of these people when they call?

Nope, because the call is international, or more likely done through some kind of VOIP network, they can't really be traced, or anything the TPS can do about it.
Just abuse them, but the calls will not stop sadly.

Humour them, pretend to go along with their instructions, to a point where you say that the last instruction does n`t work, keep stringing them along and then just slip in that you`re using an apple mac, they get really annoyed that you`ve wasted their time, you might even get the odd expletive in Indian twang!

My wife played them along by going to the laptop and saying she couldn't see the place they wanted her to click on.  After what seemed minutes they asked her if the laptop was switched on!!  She said no, but you hadn't mentioned that.  They weren't too pleased.  Another time she just put the phone down and went off into the kitchen to do some washing up, when she came back they were still on the line.  When I received it I said after a couple of minutes that I don't use windows, they hung up immediately.
Yet there are people who get caught!!

Another one I had said I had security issues with Windows, I told them my Windows were very secure and had locks on them, and no one had gained entry up to now. He swore at me and hung up, ignorant t**t!

If the call is Voip or international then £5 a month to BT will get "unknown" or "no numbers" blocked meaning they can't ring you.  Depends on how much it annoys you.  I took on the phone line of the previous resident of the rented flat I'm in, primarily because it would have take six weeks to get a new number and adsl... turns out he left because everyone was chasing him for money so the £5 a month is money well spent for me!
