Stay tuned. All will be revealed soon.

Right, I've had my six hours sleep so all can now be revealed. I watched Horizon last night 'Eat, Fast and Live Longer' and have now learned the secret to living a much healthier long life. I appreciate that nearly all the readers of this forum are low brow and don't tend to watch programmes like this so the good news is that it is available on BBC iPlayer:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/tv

I appreciate that a lot of you don't have a good enough attention span to be able to watch the whole programme so I'll briefly describe what the best way is to achieve the goal in the thread title.

There are various ways this can be done but all of them rely on fasting. All you have to do is have 2 fasting days in 7 and you will dramatically increase your life expectancy and reduce your risk substantially of contracting illnesses such as cancer and Alzheimer's disease. The 2 fasting days can be any of the 7 days and doesn't have to be the same 2 days every week.

On the fasting days you should eat only one meal and restrict the amount of calories to 600 for a man and 500 for a woman. The meal can be eaten at any time of the day and can be any food. On the other 5 days eat as much as you want of any food you want. On fasting days drink plenty of water and black tea. If you follow this plan you will also lose weight.

I would advise checking with your doctor before embarking on such a way of life if you currently have any health problems. I don't need to lose weight and currently have a very healthy lifestyle. However I will be embarking on the plan as I do want to live to over 100 and to maintain my faculties as long as possible. I'll report back in 50 years time to let you know how I've got on.

I didn't catch all of this programme, what with only having the attention span of a Rovers supporter but I'm pretty sure you can't just eat whatever you like on the 5 days off. A diet of copious quantities of premium strength lager, chips and kebabs is rapidly going to overwhelm the beneficial effects of two days fasting.

What you find though is that because of your fasting (not dieting) your appetite goes down and even though in theory you could eat and drink as you say you don't.

Yes, I've just watched the whole thing. Obviously I avoided all food today so my attention span has probably increased significantly.

Very interesting that restricting food on alternate days should have such a dramatic affect. I might even give the 5-2 day thing a try.

I'm not up for the full living on apple peel and strawberries just yet though.

I'm glad your attention span problem is getting better. I agree with you. The 5-2 method is the way forward. I hope when you get your 100th birthday telegram off the Queen you don't forget to thank me.

It's not a particularly new idea. Stanley Matthews used to fast every Monday. Whether it's a consequense that he played in the first division at 50 years of age is food for thought.

Mahatma Ghandi fasted regularly and he died at a younger age than my granddad who smoked like a chimney and never miised a meat and two veg meal in his life.

My aunty lasted well into her 90s. I think for the last 20 years she subsisted largely on tea with whisky in it, Vienetta and John Players. Except when she went for Sunday dinner at my Nans. She was as thin as a lat.

Right I'm going to do an experiment. As I'm hardcore I'm going to give it a go. I'm going to start off with 4 days of fasting, then go on to the 5/2 day strategy to give it a good kick-start. I'm interested to see how much I can get my body fat % down by and how quickly. I'm into my second day now and have been to Boots to get my Body Mass Index and Body Fat %. Here are the results:

Weight -              12st 0lb
Height -               5' 8.4''
B.M.I. -                25.0
Body Fat % -       27.8
Body Fat Mass -  21.2 kgs

I don't hold much store by B.M.I. but I'll put the information up anyway.

Less than 18.5 -          underweight
From 18.5 up to 25.0 - ideal weight
More than 25.0 -          overweight

Far more important is Body Fat %.

Excellent - 19.8
Good -       25.7
Average -  28.6
Poor -        34.7

I'll post regular updates so you can monitor my progress.

For someone who supposedly puts great store by doing research and empirical evidence I would suggest that you are making an extremely weak point based on minimal data. See my previous post if you want to know how to go about things in a professional manner.

Interesting. The weird thing about what was suggested in the documentary was that as long as you fast regularly then you can smoke and drink pretty much as you want and your body will keep on repairing the damage so you won't get ill.

Once I've got a couple of months under my belt I'm going to start smoking and drinking as much as I want again. Fasting for 2 days a week is a small price to pay.

I think the joke was it doesn't matter how much you fast if someone is going to shoot you.

I'm vegetarian so I eat a diet rich in vegetables. For the purposes of this though you can eat anything. All I would ask though is that you consider for a moment the mindless cruelty that animals are put through just so you can have your bit of meat.

I watched the Horizon programme after reading this very interesting thread and found it to be quite fascinating. I have struggled with my weight for many years and have tried every diet known to mankind. I am a prime candidate for an early death. I will visit Boots in the next couple of days and get a print out of my vital statistics and I will give this a go. I will post my results weekly, lets see what happens.
I would like to thank Mjdgreg for this live saving opportunity.

Ok I've made the decision to try this fasting method, I will be doing 2 days fasting followed by 5 days eating normally. I need to decide how best to use my 600 calories on my fasting days. Initial thoughts are a Heinz Big soup 200 calories packed out with frozen mixed veg to get up to the 600 calories.
Any other ideas on how get maximum benefit from 600 calories would be appreciated. I'm not vegetatrian and I don't eat eggs.

Thanks

I'm giving this a go too. I lost quite a lot of weight by eating less and exercising more already, so I'm sort of used to it.

When I started I was 12stone. I'm 6ft tall, so I'm not overweight but I have a bit of a tyre around my middle still. That excess fat around the abdomen is not at all a good thing, I'd like to shift it. If I can drop from a 34 waist to 32 I'd be happy.

I managed the first 48 hours without food except for a small dinner. I didn't break the fast because of hunger, which I've coped with alright, it was just to be sociable.

Anyway first weight in and I've lost 2 pounds.

I'll stick with the fast while tomorrow night and then eat normally for five days. It'll be interesting to see if I'm not back to 12 stone again.

Thank

What I've done for my 600 calories meal is as follows:

100gms. whole wheat pasta (much better than the normal stuff as it releases energy more slowly so you feel fuller for longer).

100gms. quorn mince (low in fat and calories and gives you some protein). You could try meat mince but I suspect the calorie count will be quite a bit higher.

200gms. tomato pasta sauce (I can't find a lower calorie pasta sauce).

200gms. mixed vegetables (frozen). Sainsbury's do some lovely own brand 'special mixed vegetables.'

Takes about 15 minutes to prepare and gives you a right plate full of food.

I would also recommend watching 'The Hairy Dieters' for some excellent advice on other ideas particularly if you are a meat eater.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00vq8c6

Don't forget that you can pick any 2 days out of the 7 and can constantly change them around if need be. I think if you do it on 2 consecutive days it would be harder to stick to than if you broke it up a bit.

If I've got all the measurements right, according to the body fat calculator, I'm 19%. that's 5% over the recommended level and at the top end of the average American!

I'm shocked by that!

Thanks for your concern.

I'm a size medium with a 34 waist, so I don't feel fat. There are plenty of 40 yo blokes in far worse condition.

Can't be right. The website has got its figures wrong. We all know that Americans are the fattest in the world. I'd go on my figures from Boots. At 19% you are already in the excellent category. I'd just use the website to get an idea of your body fat %.

Yep, this seems to be a more thorough calculation.

I'm 19% on that too and it says anything below 23% is good.

I'd be very happy with 19%. Hopefully I'll get there within a couple of months. When I did the website test I came out as 2% less than the 'accurate' Boots test so I'd say the website body fat calculators are quite accurate.

I'll still going to stick with the plan, for the health benefit and to see if I can drop down a waist size.

Actually as a diet I quite like it. Fasting isn't as hard as I thought it would be and it makes things straightforward. No worrying about counting calories, or this will be alright or that might be ok. it's just no food for the day, no excuses.

Just checking you've got this right. You do know that on the 5/2 day plan you can have a 600 calorie meal on each of the fasting days?

If I may, sir, I interpreted this as no snacking etc.

Correct. If you snack it doesn't work. You need to trick your body into thinking you are starving so it then goes into survival mode. This then kick-starts the body repair process which reduces the effects of ageing and prevents you from getting serious illnesses. If you snack, your body won't know your 'starving'. You can drink as much black tea or water as you want.

No I know, I mean I reckon that's what RD was getting at with the "no food for the day".

So does that mean no milk in t'tea? :(

Afraid so. I drink black tea normally anyway and you soon get used to it. (no sugar either).

I've watched it again and just want to check I've got this right.

Fast on any 2 days of 7.

600 calories allowed on a fasting day to be used in one meal ie. no saving calories for later eg. 3 x 200 calorie snacks as the objective is to induce hunger which then reaps the desired benefits.

If the above is correct I would question Mjdgregs decision to use food that releases energy slowly as surely this is slowing the benefits. It's not often I disagree with Mjdgreg but I question his logic on this one.

Correct. My preferred option of a slower release food I don't think makes any odds. It just makes you feel fuller for longer but you are still consuming only 600 calories which will be burned up at the same rate regardless of what you eat. Once the 600 calories are burnt up your body will go into starvation mode but you'll just feel less hungry for longer.

I will start this plan this week my first fasting day will be Tuesday I 've been experimenting tonight 200 Cals Heinz Big Soup mixed with 400 cals of veg. I have learned a valuable lesson about veg it has few calories 400 Cals of veg is a massive amount and mixed with a Big Soup it looks like a massive bowl of veg. No way I can eat that much veg so it's back to the drawing board. My next attempt at 600 Cals will be a low calorie meal (Weight Watchers or similar) combined with some veg. I will let you know how I get on. Marydene Rover

I've become a follower of the great man on Twitter. He has tweeted that the 600 calories can be split so no need to have it all in one go. This is going to make things a lot easier. I think I'm going to go on the alternate day fasting now because he says this does give better results. I'll be having two 275 calorie meals from now on with a 50 calorie cup-a-soup in the middle of the day. He recommends looking at BBC good food website which has recipe search and you can look for recipes by calorie content. It can also be accessed by an app for your smart phone. He does his fast days on a Tuesday and Thursday.

Seems like he advocates cutting down on protein as well on the non-fast days. You should stick to the 50gms. a day that is recommended. It's also OK to put a splash of milk in your tea if you can't handle it neat (he also drinks coffee). The hunger feelings on the fast days do get easier as your body gets used to the new regime. He's also planning a follow up programme.

Completed my first 8 days now and here is an update. I've put the new figures in brackets.

Original Weight -              12st 0lb (11st 8lb)
Original Height -               5' 8.4'' (no change)
Original B.M.I. -                25.0 (24.1)
Original Body Fat % -       27.8 (26.7)
Original Body Fat Mass -  21.2 kgs (20.35)

BMI

Less than 18.5 -          underweight
From 18.5 up to 25.0 - ideal weight
More than 25.0 -          overweight

Far more important is Body Fat %.

Excellent - 19.8
Good -       25.7
Average -  28.6
Poor -        34.7

So off to an excellent start. It may be my imagination but the arthritis I was starting to develop in my left hand has also improved. I'm hoping it will be cured completely over the coming weeks. These results have been achieved with no exercise.

I've also found a good website with a bit more information on body fat which takes account of age.

Green tea is fine. Any water-based drink with virtually no calories in it is fine (except fizzy stuff like Cola).

Well I weighed in after the first week and... I'm still 12 stone.

Just to add I've had a short seaside break, so there are a few cooked breakfasts I wouldn't normally eat and one or two extra beers. On the other hand I've done more walking and digging in sand than I normally do.

You've had an unusual week so to still be 12 stones after all those extra calories is a good result in my book. Cooked breakfasts and beer are deadly for extra calories and won't be burnt off just by walking or digging sand.

I've been doing this for a week now fasted Tuesday and Thursday last week.

Height 5'8
Original Weight 16'8 lbs (15'12lbs)
Original Body Fat 39.8% (31.5%)
Original Body Water 42.6% (49.4%)
Orginal Body Muscle 56.6% (64.7%)
Original BMI 35.2 (32.7)

The measurements have been taken with a Lloyds Pharmacy Body Composition Monitor which I bought very cheaply. I cannot  comment on the accuracy of the device but the results are very immpressive and have spurred me on to continue.

I imagine the big weight loss is for one week only and will be body fluid this dramatic initial weight loss has happened when I have dieted before. I have had a very typical week for me which has involved a fair amount of excercise and a few visits to the pub. I will update again next week and see how it goes. Good Luck to you all.

Thing is, this isn't a weight loss diet. It's a lifestyle regime, the objective is to give your internal organs a break from processing fats and proteins. Watch the episode of Horizon, it is fascinating.

This could work very well with sporting activities Wilts. As far as I understand it your body needs a regular break from exercise to repair and build muscle, so all you do is build in a fast around your regular cycling and then stick to your higher calorie diet which you need for the exercise days.

Week 2

Weighed in this morning and I've lost 3lb. I'm now 11'11. I did check in after my two days off food and I'd gone as low as 11'10 so I've only gained a pound during the last 3 normal eating days.

I think my measurements are almost exactly what they were, though maybe my trousers do feel a touch looser.

I've gone in a notch on my trouser belt. Reckon I'll be almost 11 stones in a couple of weeks the way it's going. So will be 1 stone weight loss in a month near enough.

Going in the right direction but there's been a slow down in weight loss this week then? 1 stone in a month might prove to be a bit optimistic.

How are you finding the empty days?

I'm mid way through my second week. I work shifts and found it easy last week whilst I was on nights. This week I'm on afternoons and have found it difficult to get to sleep after work because I'm hungry. I'll stick with it though it seems to be working, I have a lot of weight to lose but I'm doing primarily for the health benefits.

You could be right. I'm a born optimist. The first week was always going to be the biggest weight loser but I reckon I can drop at least 2lbs a week for the foreseeable future so that would get me to 11 stones 2lbs.

I'm finding the empty days a lot easier to handle now that I've split my calories into 3 'meals.' However it does take a lot of will power to avoid temptations like ice cream on days out. I've found not having 'bad foods' in the house has helped a lot and the shopping bill has come down a bit as well.

I do enjoy my food a lot more on my non-fast days and don't feel the need to over eat to make up for the fast days. Once I get to less than 19% body fat I'll relax the regime a bit and just keep it there. Michael Mosely throws in the odd 6/1 week as he doesn't want to lose any more weight.

I've been doing this for 2 weeks now still going in the right direction but my weight loss loss has slowed.

Height 5'8 (5'8) (5'8)
Original Weight 16'8 lbs (15'12lbs)(15'9 lbs)
Original Body Fat 39.8% (31.5%)(37.5%)
Original Body Water 42.6% (49.4%)(44.7%)
Orginal Body Muscle 56.6% (64.7%)(58.9%)
Original BMI (35.2)(32.7)(33.3)

Clearly going well, not at all sure about some of the other readings, ie. body fat etc they seem to lack credibility or perhaps it's just last weeks results that are wrong.

I would be surprised if you had shifted that much body fat and gained that much muscle In the first week.

The most reliable figure is your overall weight, which has dropped significantly.

Northern consommé, the football favourite Bovril makes a warming, savoury drink on those empty days. It has very little calorific content, which is great but has quite a lot of salt, which is not so great. Still makes a nice change from black tea or coffee.

I have to say I was sceptical about claims that it could extend your lifespan as they have seen with rats.

I'm doing it for the other health benefits associated with being overweight. There is also the suggestion that fasting can help slow the onset of dementia and prevent some cancers.

Week 3

11stone 8 and a half. That's a 2.5 pound drop.

Not bad at all, I was expecting to be disappointed this week since I had a couple of large meals, I had a couple of pints and a pie at the football and generally felt I'd not made any effort to go for healthy options but then the fasting has kicked in.

It's a system that seems to work for me, I've had to tighten the belt a notch and my jeans feel much looser. I tried on a pair of old size 32 trousers, which I can now button up! A bit of a snug fit still, it's getting there.

The Horizon programme does stress that you should see a doctor before trying it. Obviously diabetics would be advised not to do it.

You will live longer if you don't have a heart attack or avoid cancer

That's only according to one study. The other study in the article says the opposite. It's early days yet. There is no evidence it does any harm and the study did say that health improved so quality of life was better into old age. Like River Don I can accept not living longer. I'd rather live a healthier old age though and save money on the food shopping bill for the rest of my life. Also my reduced weight will mean I won't need knee replacements, etc therefore I will also be doing my bit to ease the strain on the NHS as well.

It's not a particularly new idea. Stanley Matthews used to fast every Monday. Whether it's a consequense that he played in the first division at 50 years of age is food for thought.
Correct sir, Sir Stanley put his longevity in the game down to having only fruit juice on Mondays, and lots of skipping.

Completed my first 28 days now and here is an update. I've put the new figures in brackets.

Original Weight -              12st 0lb (11st 2lb)
Original Height -               5' 8.4'' (no change)
Original B.M.I. -                25.0 (22.5)
Original Body Fat % -       27.8 (24.0)

BMI

Less than 18.5 -          underweight
From 18.5 up to 25.0 - ideal weight
More than 25.0 -          overweight

Far more important is Body Fat %.

Excellent - 19.8
Good -       25.7
Average -  28.6
Poor -        34.7

I've started giving breakfast a miss on my fasting days and am finding it relatively easy to stick with the programme. A decent meal in the evening helps as this is the time when I'm not 'busy'.

Yes well done indeed. BST is right your body composition stats add up to well above 100% every time. Something's not right there.

Week 4

Weighed in at 11st 8. Near as damn it the same as last week, perhaps I'm reaching an equilibrium?

I'd like to lose just a little more to make the size 32 waist a reality. We'll see what the results are next week, perhaps the weight will continue to fall but more slowly.

Hi all, 4 weeks in, todays results for your perusal,

Original Height 5'8, No Change
Original Weight 16'8 lbs (15'5lbs)
Original Body Fat 39.8% (35.6%)
Original BMI 35.2 (31.7)

So 2 more lbs off and the other data going in the right direction. Also wearing a size down in trousers. I do feel that I can do this long term it's fairly easy.

Very well done Marydene. Sounds like it's going to be very expensive for you as time goes on with the new wardrobe that will be required!

Not as expensive as you think I've been a yo yo dieter for years I have clothes that span 34 waist to 42 waist. I'll just have to wait till they're back in fashion.

Week 5 weigh in

11st 6

I think the results vary a bit depending on which days of the week you fast. Last week I fasted over the weekend, so I'd had a few days to put a couple of pounds back before weigh in.

This week today is a fast day so I should be a bit lighter tomorrow. The trend is still down.

Week 7

Full week with no fasting and birthday celebrations saw my weight back up to 11st 9. A 4 pound gain.

I felt a bit guilty about that so put in 2 consecutive days fasting which has brought it back to 11st 7 today.

Best part of 2 stone now, eh? It's going very well.

I'm at 11st 5 again. I think I probably have reached a state of equilibrium but since that's about a stone lighter than where I was I'm fine with it. And it's a good healthy weight, so I'll stick with the regime.

It looks like it's just me and you now since Mick has decided to stop posting. Keep reporting though MD, what you're doing is an inspiration for anyone who wants to get into shape.

Not a Typo Filo,

mjdgreg has previously acknowleged that the 'm' stands Michael I was being friendly calling him Mick.

Week 9

I've lost 3 lbs this week now down to 14st 8lbs which is 2 stones off in 9 weeks, I've increased the excercise and I'm cycling at every opportunity. I can get into some stuff in the wardrobe that I haven't worn for ages.

Well in answer to the thread title, simply, NO.

For every half an hour every day run you do you'll add half an hour to your life, so you really better like running or it's all for nothing. On the other hand if you smoke and drink you may lose ten years. But they're the years you'll be spending dribbling into a rice-pudding in some carehome wondering who you are and why your kids don't visit you anymore, even though they come every day, or you haven't even got any kids.

Choice is a wonderful thing.

Well done RD, I'm still 14' 8lbs this week so no change still happy with my progress. Viking Don this thread does not advocate running or excercise it deals with the health benefit associated with having only 600 calories on 2 days each week.

The thinking behind the 5:2 diet is you might get an extra 10 years before the senile dementia sets in, That's the main reason why the programme maker looked into the research. He wants to live longer and stay mentally alert. At which point cancer might get you or you might then still spend 5 years dribbling in your rice pudding. Better than 10 though. Of course you might also get lucky, like my Aunty who smoked and drinked and still saw out 90+ years and stayed mentally alert to the end.

There's always going to be a certain amount of luck involved I suppose but you might just be able to increase your odds of a better old age.

You sound like you might be a bit of a fatty who likes to smoke and drink. All you will be doing if you have an unhealthy lifestyle is bringing on the associated health problems of old age forward, possibly into middle age. Harden up like me Marydene and Viking Don have done and get with the programme.

For the record, I'm now 10 stones 10 llbs.

Where are you on the global fat scale?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-18770328

To be honest I'm not sure how accurate this seems but according to this I'm in better shape than 95% of British blokes in my age range.

According to this I'm now the weight of your average middle aged Rwandan...
Title: Re: Do you want to live longer, lose weight and have a healthier life?

I'm in better shape than 90% of my age range in the UK and 64% of the rest of the world. That will do me. I'm the equivalent to your average male from Malawi.

On another note, why is England never recognised as a country when you input information into these kind of calculators etc. I always thought England was a country. Why do we always have to be classed as the United Kingdom. I'd much prefer to be classed as English.

A bit of a fatty? I've got kitchen appliances in orbit around me as I type mate.

Seriously, if you wanna lose weight, do some exercise, eat less takeaways. If you wanna put off the onset of senility do some maths every day. If you wanna live longer quit smoking and take fish oil suppplements every day, or even better eat an oily fish a couple of times a week.

I was just quoting stats in my last post, if that makes me a bit of a fatty then you must be enormous Micky!

11'2 today.

I've wondered if the weight loss has stopped before but I've noticed for the last couple of weeks my weight seems to vary between 11'4 and 11'1 depending on when I eat. I'm happy enough if that's it.

Yes and it works. I'm down to my 'fighting weight' of 10 and a half stones. I don't want to go any lower so keep any eye on my weight and eat enough to maintain it. I still do two 600 calorie days per week but this is to keep me healthy and is nothing to do with weight loss.

Since I've started, the arthritis that was developing in my left hand has disappeared. I also have better skin (I used to have to put a steroid cream on my chest and back most days but no longer need to do this any more). I am now perfectly healthy and am looking forward to receiving my telegram from the King when I reach 100. I will promptly then tear it up and put it in the bin.

I'm thinking of writing to the Prime Minister to see if I can get a rebate on the tax I pay. As I'm obviously doing the right thing and keeping myself healthy I will not be a burden on the NHS. It's time all you fatties were made to pay more as you are costing the likes of me a fortune.

Why do you ask? That's a bit of a random question if you don't mind me saying. I'll answer it anyway. I don't know but I hope she drops dead as soon as possible so it is one less sponger living a life of unbridled luxury that the taxpayer has to pay for.

I'm still keeping up to it, though I did take a three week break over Christmas and promtly put half a stone back.

I'm back on the straight and narrow, two days a week off food and the weight is falling away again.

For anyone doing this (I'm planning on going out and getting some scales this weekend) I'd recommend the myfitnesspal app, I think they have a website if you prefer that too. You can set a target weight and put in your current weight and it'll give you a calorie count per day of what you 'can' eat to reach it, and you can put in what you've eaten and it adds up the calories for you. Also takes off the calories you've burnt during exercise so you know what you've been up to.

This isn't a diet. It's a lifestyle change. Eat as normal, except for the 2 days that you restrict your calorie intake to 600. You will live longer and have improved health. Losing weight is just something else that happens.
