Brugges is a lovely place. Venice of the north they call it, friendly people too. Koln isn't bad either, plus there's a chocolate museum :)
-
Cologne, Munich or Berlin - take in a game whilst you're there.
Or Dubrovnik.
-
Not overly fussed bout Germany if I'm honest! Brugge is a good shout! Hmmmmm
-
Krakow was good, cheap pint nice enough grub and a day trip to Auschwitz was haunting and the most sobering place in the world. Everyone should go once in their lifetime imo
-
Don't knock Germany Berlin is fantastic. what about these Granada in Spain Florence in Italy or if money is not a problem Stavangar (sic) in Norway is stunning.
-
Germany's a lot better than you'd expect, some beautiful cities, the nicest people you could hope to meet too.
-
Berlin - best city break I've been on in Europe.
Koln's cathedral is the most incredible building I've ever seen. Even more so than Barcelona's Sagrada Familia.
I hear great things about Munich though. I'll be investigating these rumours during this year's Oktoberfest.
-
Budapest is a great place. Cheap to get to and the price of beer is cheap - average price about £1 a pint. A boat trip on the Danube, some great Gothic architecture and some fine museums if that's your thing. Very friendly people too.

Better than sagrada familia? That's a big shout! That place is immense!

Agree Redj i have been fortunate threw work visited more cities in Germany than you could shake a stick at. The only one i did not like was Frankfurt, the best was Aachen close to the Belgium border. We had a day off work and wandered in to a little bar in the afternoon only Brits in there they spoke very little English and my German is weak, they were playing darts and having a ball 501 last one to check out gets the round in(Germany as many many different games based around this principal) and yes they approached us after a little while to join in and what a fantastic afternoon we had quality.

It'll be alright when they finish it.

L J Monk Oktoberfest is mega. only down side it is on the must do list for all the Aussies that come to London were i am now to take all the joiners jobs and then bugger off back and reclaim there tax back  It is what you expect and more. Yep you do get the bar maids in costume and carrying big steins and laderhosen clad ummpah bands playing every thing from old tunes to the latest chart music the best i heared was ACDC'S back in black and Bon Jovi living on a prayer. You will enjoy and please book a hospital bed for your return.

Best bit is most of the Germans speak good English and do actually make the effort once they spot you're foreign.

I have done and would recommend (in no particular order) ,....
Berlin fantastic
Koln ditto
Prague 10/10
Vilnius (a few weeks ago - dont miss the Svyturys Baltas)
Tallinn - again fantastic
Krakow (3 times) - sorry Johnnydog I dont NEED to go to Auschwitz for it to haunt me. It does that anyway
Budapest (what an iconic Parliament Buildong)
Madrid (brilliant)
Bratislava
Vienna
Bruges
.... and a heap of Towns / Cities in the Netherlands
Bruges has always been my favourite and perhaps that is where I would go if I could only go to one of the above
-
Loved Prague. Brilliant place and stunning women.
-
Does it have to be Europe? My favourite place for a city break is Chicago, its just awesome!
-
cant believe dublin is not among this lot, dresden is a great city, leipzieg too from either colditz and messien are only a stone throw away. how anyone escaped colditz and got home in the 40's beggers belief..... lovely little town though
-
true enough Dublin is very good as my name on here goes i have just finished living there for 14 months and paying through the nose for everything its got abit stale. That aside everybody does the usual Temple bar city center bit and rightly so, but if your there for a few days i would recommend roaming out of the center, we had some great nights out were we were on the south side. try Blackrock/ Stillorgan area or where we were Dundrum. if feeling adventurous a little out of the way pub halfway up 3 rock mountain near Rathfarnham called the blue light on a Sunday afternoon live music and i don't mean the usual Irish stuff usually local musicians jamming, fantastic atmosphere and mega friendly people usually played in the garden with stunning views out over Dublin bay and the city

London isn't bad.
Madrid was alright but in these days of austerity I don't know.
Prague is good.
-
Iv'e done Dublin several times and I find it EXPENSIVE
1 Pint of Bitter and a Large wine was £11 in a bog standard Pub last time I went. This was in the City and was during the All Ireland Finals at Croke Park a few years ago
I then went to Howth , Malahide , Blackrock and Bray amongst others and amazingly the price of the round was HIGHER than in the City
Vilnius costs about £60 with Wizz Air and the samw round costs about £3 with Best Western Hotel @ £54 per room per night to me its a no brainer
Its Lietuva (Lithuania) for me every time

I second Krakow. Visited it in mid June and it is a fantastic city. A lot of wonderful architecture, cheap food and beer and history everywhere. Also went to Auschwitz, which will just leave you absolutely dumbfounded and numb.
I've written a couple of articles on my visit there, and still have three to go. Feel free to have a look:
