Title: Horsemeat!
Post by: Bald Rover on February 08, 2013, 04:30:36 am
Well I`m in the meat industry and I can only say its about time!

The supermarkets have for years ripped the hearts out of small businesses and we have had to watch dumbfounded as to how they can offer the products they do at the prices they do! Well now you know! The supermarkets are all full of apologies now , yeah sorry they have been caught!
hopefully now people will lose faith in them and get back supporting the local butcher and the milkman greengrocer newsagent etc!

I work for a wholesale butcher we supply lots of local and surrounding area butchers, a lot of whom are struggling to keep afloat because of the supermarkets offering cheap products most of which arent cheap really just well marketed, hopefully now these traditional butchers who refuse to cut corners because they were taught to do things properly will now get the bite of the apple they deserve.

as a follow up to, this latest revelation isnt always down to the supplier! the supermarkets put these companies under great pressure to provide a product usually for a tiny margin of profit to the suppliers etc and sometimes this forces their hands as companies as they know the supermarket will cut their throats for pennies and change suppliers!

rant over!

Well, if the independent butchers (or the MLC) have got any nous about them, now's the time to get plenty of advertising out there ramming home the message that at the family butchers 'you can see what you're getting'...

As someone who doesn't eat meat or fish I can't see what all the fuss is about. In my opinion it is much worse to eat lamb (a baby sheep for Christ-sakes) and don't get me started on veal or bunny rabbits. If you think it's right to eat meat then you shouldn't be squeamish about eating a bit of horsemeat (or dog for that matter).

I love a trip to the butchers.  You may have to pay a bit more but at least you know you are getting quality stuff.

The human race are carnivores, you`re obviously not eating any meat to replenish damaged or dead brain cells, that comment of yours explains a lot!

It is by far better to spend a little bit more for a little bit less to make sure you are getting the very best your money can buy.

I was almost fanatical about giving my customers the very best I could provide as are the majority of butchers. This comes about because of the nations love for convenience foods because we will see it go way beyond the cheapest products of that I have no doubt.

Now the piper has to be paid.

Wrong. We are omnivores. I'm not for or against eating meat. That decision has to be left to the individual. All I would ask is that meat eaters consider the appalling cruelty animals have to suffer to provide you with your pound of flesh.

I think you're missing the point. I've no problem with eating horsemeat - when I chose to eat it. The fact of the matter is this is clearly marketed and sold as beef. You'd be pretty pissed off if you found out your quorn had been laced with polystyrene (although it might enhance the flavour)

What's the difference between eating a baby sheep and a grown up sheep? What has age got to do with it?

I think it says a lot that this has been going on for a while without any meat eater noticing. As soon as it is found out that you've been eating those nice cuddly horses there is uproar. Just imagine what would have happened if you'd been eating those nice cuddly doggies. The uproar would have been 100 times worse. Why? Because meat eaters don't by and large think logically about what they are doing. I've yet to meat a meat eater that would be happy to eat doggy. No logic to that point of view whatsoever.

How do you think the mummy sheep feels about having her baby taken away for slaughter? You obviously haven't thought about it or you couldn't care less. I'll tell you, she will be grief-stricken. Just think about that for a second the next time you tuck into baby sheep.

It's hard to make a point to someone with their fingers in their ears.

How would someone notice without the meat being tested? I'm sure anyone who eats a value burger is acquiescing to highly dubious meat quality, but if they're declaring what it is then you pays your money and take your choice.

If Tesco/Findus had marketed these things as 0.01-100% horsemeat, no problem. I quite like dogs, they have a personality and are common pets. I'd feel similar about eating a dolphin, but then equally I have no problem eating tuna or salmon.

I can see why some people are squeamish about eating rabbit, I'm not personally.

Typical meat eater. Full of illogical statements. The real kicker for me about how illogical you meat eaters are is the fact that you are unhappy about having horse meat in your burgers but are quite happy to have faeces in it! Unbelievable.

People are weird when it comes to the animals they will or wont eat. But what about milk?  Humans make milk specifically for humans but we choose to drink it from another species.

Yes, meat eaters are a weird bunch. The barbaric way milk is produced is unbelievable.

We could save the enviroment and create jobs.  Less cows = less ozone depletion, then start milking the unemployed.

I agree, but unfortunately its not always convenient/possible to go into town every week. Then theres the parking issue. I would happily pay a bit more and go to the local butchers but there aren't many of them left. Supermarkets have driven them away, and their meat is generally shite .
