Title: Halal food, yes.....or no?
Post by: normal rules on February 27, 2013, 08:48:43 pm
Meat is getting a lot of press at the moment. because of my line of work of some stuff I am involved in currently I am interested in rovers supporters feeling on this issue.
So my question is this, are you bothered what meat you eat. in particular are you bothered how the meat is prepared. You may not be aware but KFC sell halal chicken. Subway sell meat which is halal and all New Zealand lamb that is exported to uk and around the world from NZ is halal. That is all NZ lamb in all supermarkets. Some supermarkets are particularly sensitive about disclosing this information and probably with good cause as i imagine it would affect sales if the truth was made widely public. Now I am not an islamaphobe, nor am I racist but I do feel strongly about meat being correctly and accurately labelled so that customers can be informed. if you go to a fast food establishment in Huddersfield it is not uncommon to see placards with halal or non halal meat advertised to cater for the local Islamic/Muslim population. My question therefore is, does it matter , are you bothered or if the meat tastes ok and is the right price then it does not matter where it's from or how it is prepared? are we not entitled to not only know where the meat comes from but also how the meat is prepared and processed. I think this is particularly topical given the recent horrors concerning horse meat. And for the record I spent a number of years in Germany and quite enjoyed frickadellas ( horse meat burgers) which are obviously advertised as such, so i am not an animal rights or vegan type!

So long as I know what it is that I'm eating (or rather what animal it's from - apparently I'm best off not knowing what parts..) I don't mind, and obviously so long as it's clean and made hygienically.

Personally, I'd rather have eaten Halal meat without knowing than I would horsemeat.

I want to be informed where the meat is from and how it has been prepared.  I am not convinced that Halal slaughter is as perfect as some would have you believe.  But then nor am I too happy with non Halal slaughter.  If I am perfectly honest I tend to dodge the thought and just enjoy the taste!

Just because it's beef doesn't mean you might not be ending up with a bit minced anything ? Bit of testicle, shin brain all the off cuts.

Food for thought

There was an interesting programme on TV last week about pizza shops with muslim owners replacing ham on pizzas with halal turkey, but not changing their menus accordingly.  It was set in Birmingham, and thay ststed they expected 80% of pizza shops were doing this.

The big issue is that the food is incorrectly labelled.  If I buy frozen beef lasagne (which I dont) I would expect beef, not horse.  If it said horsemeat on the labelling, then thats fine.  I'm sure that wouldnt bother some people.

Don't believe everything you hear when trying new things to eat.  I bought some Meat balls in Thailand after hearing they were the dogs b*llocks, but I wasn't keen on them.

I see Macdonalds have announced that they are proud to say that their meats only contain beef.

I'm more amazed they've used the word 'proud' and not 'surprised'
