Lee Croft, who recently made the move to join ex-Latics' manager Paul Dickov at newly promoted Doncaster Rovers, has sent a message to the Latics' fans explaining the mix-up with his contract. Croft explained that the affair has left a sour taste with the way it was put over at Boundary Park.
-
Just seen this myself. I have not seen any announcements anywhere though!
-
Its a Pre- contract agreement, wont be announced until his current employer is no longer paying him i guess.
-
Lee Croft?!
If this is the calibre of player we really are signing then wow. Fat bas**rd.
-
If we do sign him that will be 2 right wingers we will have who will want to play every week.
-
So we've got Cotterill, Coppinger, Bennett and Croft who are all natural right winger. We've let Woods go who was our only natural left sided midfielder and with Spurr likely to leave it'll mean Husband will be employed at left back rather than left midfield. As a team we currently look less balanced than a fat lass on a tightrope eating the contents of a greggs shop with only her right hand!
-
We have awesome right wingers already 3 that are good enough for the championship easily...Lee Croft is a fatter and slower version of Andy Reid!
-
who is to say he will be employed as a winger. John Oster was a winger, how was he deployed ?.
-
Where is the snippet in the OP actually from?
Croft apparently won Oldham's Fan's Player of the Year award this season. And he's a lot younger than I thought he was.

-
I saw croft 3 times against rovers last season and he played well every game, some of you on here ought to get a grip and give the lad a chance if we have got him, and not slag him off calling him a fat bas**rd etc.
-
He has lost weight according to some of their fans so even if he is on the chunky side who cares he can lose it or use it
-
Will give him a chance for sure, but surely this a surprise move? Maybe an indication that we are looking to play the ball on the ground a lot more under Paul Dickov.
-
If this is the caliber of player we are attempting to sign then I am sorry but Dickov will slowly run the gains this club has made into the ground. What has happened to Dickov's and Flynn's infamously long lists? Have they gone missing? Has the pen gone missing as well?
#clubincrisis
-
Bennett and Copps are more versatile than Cotts and Croft. They could be deployed elsewhere.
-
Whats to say Bennett will be staying? Plus we will need two wingers imo. Croft looked a good player when we played Oldham and i'm willing to bet anyone he will hold onto the ball longer than Bennett has ever done. Good signing imo.
-
For everyone saying we have too many right midfielders, Real play Ronaldo on the left and Di Maria on the right allowing the to cut in rather than cross. Could it not be possible to put someone on the left and allow them to cut in?

Firstly I am quite surprised a man of your supposed intelligence manages to spell CALIBRE wrongly.
Secondly how is PD running the gains the club has made into the ground?
We haven't signed anyone yet!!! Most players are still under contract and getting paid by their clubs.
Once we get to the start of the season you can start moaning IF we haven't signed anyone to your satisfaction. Until then why not try and be a sensible supporter?

I don't claim to have intelligence. I claim to have knowledge gained through experience. And that's what makes me a frightening proposition in a debate.
Do you still remember our last championship season? Do you honestly think signing overweight 4th rate players from a club which has been flirting with relegation (in a poor league) is the right approach we should be taking. If you do, you are a true deluded whomper.
Dickov has no experience of managing a club with the expectations like ours. He's simply out of depth and already stringing half-truths the public ("I'll be working tonight" - well, where's the evidence Paul?)
I am going to set my stall out now. I am truly frightened for our prospects next season with a man who is clearly in it above his head, station and personal ability.
-

RoT..
Statements like this really make my blood boil.
How the f*** do you know what Dickov has or hasn't been doing, or the board, or Flynn, just because nothing has been announced? I know you know very well that they will be working hard behind the scenes, so why be so negative, 2 months before Dickov's Rovers team kicks a ball in anger?
If that's your idea of support, go follow Sheff Utd or someone like that, or at least give our new manager a chance, and judge him by results 10/15/20 games into the new season.

Pre-season is the single most important period for any club (especially a small championship club like ours). If we don't get the right players in now we basically mess up the whole season. Judging Dickov on results will then be pointless.
4th rate players from Oldham?
Nope.
-
b*llocks. You get no points pre-season.
Who's to say that players who may not have set the world alight at other clubs (or managers) may not gel or click into place here and form an effective team?
-

Well now you've decided to get personal I expect the mods to come down on you like a tonne of bricks. You are in big trouble my friend.
I should actually be rewarded for being brave enough to have an opinion.

feel no one is giving dickov a chance. we still have flynn and jones to offer "advice". lets not forget at oldham he had his backroom staff put on gardening leave and was given no money. on boxing day they were no push overs and did well in the cup. Croft has represented England at international level, he is England's most-capped youth International, with 40 up to Under-20 level having been capped at Under-16, Under-17, Under-18, Under-19's and Under-20 level by England. Including captaining England under-18s. he also won the Fans Player of the Season award and played in 53 out of Oldham's 54 games in all competitions. cant be that bad. :rtid:
-
He was quality when he played for Norwich and a fans favourite too.
-
Well I don't know about anyone else but if we shouldn't be signing players from a team flirting with relegation then I suppose no-one wants Furman back?
-
From the "Arsenal of the North" to the "Oldham of Yorkshire" in the space of a few years.

Two players on our books last season........Garry Woods and Mark Wilson were both at a certain Lancashire club.
Did that make us th Manchester United of Yorkshire?

He's not a bad player. He' a very clever player who fits into the way Dickov plays. Oldham played some of the best football i saw last year and i'm sure given time he will get us playing some good stuff to. Give the guy a chance.

well we did win the league............... (with a squad full of 4th rate players who weren't good enough at their previous clubs and would be fighting relegation if I remember the last pre-season predictions)

Yes Billy Sharp was a fat Bast**d and look how well he turned out to be
-
I can't see what all the fuss is about,Dickov has managed him at Oldham if he thinks he is good enough to play for us in the Championship that's OK by me.
-
In all my time reading this forum the nonsense coming from rovers on Thames tops the lot.
Obviously has no idea

Yep of course you are , since when did the word ''and'' start a sentence ?
-
As far as I remember from playing against Lee Croft, whether it was Oldham or whoever (i'm sure he played against us for Derby) he has one hell of a delivery. I'm sure he set up two in the game they knocked us out of the FA cup and also played well on TV vs Liverpool and Everton.
If he's fat and overweight, so in other words, unfit, how did he manage to play 45+ games last season?
If you don't rate him as a player then by all means put your views across, it's a forum after all, but don't start spouting rubbish about things that are clearly untrue or things you can't backup with anything other than "he's fat and 4th rate"

You know you've won the debate when people start reverting to insults and pointing out grammatical mistakes (even though they are not).
You think 'and' can't start a sentence. Ha ha. Whomper.
I could school you on the evolution of english grammar but I won't because I am the bigger man. But I will say this. I am someone who has written two novels in his lifetime and written for multiple national newspapers on critical issues. Although my books didn't do well commercially (due mainly to poor marketing and me not wanting to sell out my principles), at literary festivals up and down the country they got a staggering response. At one said event, Bill Oddie and James May from Top Gear were promoting their autobiographies and had read my 2nd book and described it as (and these are their words not mine) "A thinking mans harry potter". Sadly, I don't write as much as I used to due to the accident in the Manx TT race last year, but one thing that cannot be doubted is my literary talent and grasp of the english language.

Woah didn't realise you were the debate king. What muggish behaviour. Hope Croft turns out to be class. 'Rovers on Thames'. Crikey.
-
Its truly fab being a Rovers fan.
In 30 years its not changed, so many diverse and often pickled views !
I reckon Croft has the mental toughness we'll need next season, he aint going to back off.
We'll be in the trenches from the off, substance ahead of style to begin with.
Furman, Croft, Copps, Cotts, Syers, Jones, Brown are going to be a decent spine for me.

Rovers on Thames is the biggest wind up merchant I have ever read on here. His posts are stuffed full of irony and I can't believe some people take him seriously!! I bet hes pissing himself. It makes for very entertaining reading though! He's blatantly trying to be our very own Brian the Blade and having a right old laugh.

I was speaking to my boss about lee croft when his name cropped up on a few rumours. He is a season ticket holder at Derby, and he said Croft was a decent player and is a solid championship player. He was a promising player at one time with Manchester city, and I would expect him to be a decent acquisition.
Bennett isn't nailed on to resign (personally I don't mind if he does go) and Copps has the versatility and experience to play lw, rw or a central role.
I'm sure Dickov knows what he is doing if he has signed croft, and as someone else on here mentioned he was oldhams player of the year. Croft will have a point to prove and obviously fits PD's system well.
-
Well I love RoT. He might well be making it all up as he goes along, but boy he does with style and humour. And I suspect he doesn't take himself very seriously too - which is something we could all learn from.

Croft in to replace Bennett hopefully! Bennett has not done enough to be getting anywhere near the 1st eleven! Croft has been in the Championship and did well! Plus is meant to be a real character in the dressing room! Sounds like a great signing to me!! Bring in Wellens and Baxter and then all we need is a pacey centre back and a goalkeeper!!
-
He's always impressed me on the few occasions he's played against us - that's good enough for me!

"How to make yourself look a complete tit, in 3 easy stages"
I'm sure that was one of them, can't remember the other, oh wait, I think it is "total b*llocks"
-
Personally from the outside looking in,on signing Croft i'd say no thanks,he seems from my limited knowledge of him,a player who was a good player three or four years ago,but do i know as much about him as Dickov,no would be the answer, the pluses for him he's played at a higher level, and we will need a mix of up and coming players, and players that know what's needed at the level.
It could turn out a shrewd signing,it does seem a bit silly having a collection of right wingers, but maybe he's thinking of moving some on,Bennett we've waited and waited and very little has come from him, either Dickov will get the ability out of him,or he's maybe never going to do it for us,and has to move on,age doesn't matter if he isn't doing it he will have to go.
-
I think RoT's first book was titled, "How To Beat The Breathalyser In One Easy Lesson".
His follow up book if I remember correctly was titled, "Walks In The Yorkshire Dales".
-
Just shows you where Dickov's priorities are though! I'm not debating Lee Croft's quality, ability, however you want to put it, but, we are in need of a decent 'keeper, a prolific goalscorer and I thought the first lad he'd sign up from Oldham would be Furman!?
When Dickov was appointed two weeks ago, John Ryan said in his statement that, "The list of players he (PD) has put forward is unbelievable for DRFC", I'm sorry, but if that's the calibre we've to look forward too, then I'm as disappointed as I was when Dickov was unveiled!

Genius. Just genius.
All this and still you find time to learn/teach Swahili on youtube. Your time management skills are exemplary, RoT
And don't forget shaving Ben Fogle's ball sack.
:that: Let's also not forget about teaching David Brailsford everything he knows about cycling and coaching!

That statement sums you up, you`re not and were never going to give Dickov a chance. Do you think we have to sign players in order of priority? or would it not be better to sign players as and when they become available?
-

Another ridiculous statement, how on earth do you know we're not signing a goalkeeper and a striker, means nowt what order they come in. Just an excuse to have a go, which makes you look daft
-
We'll see, I've never said I'm not going to give Dickov a chance, just you lot who think you're the epitomy of everything good about DRFC jumping on the 'we hate doom mongers' bandwagon! I don't see the point in signing Lee Croft, when we have David Cotterill, Copps, Kyle Bennett etc, etc.
Like an Oldham fan said on Twitter yesterday, "he's a godd bloke and his tactics will come good for 6 months at least, after that he's clueless, he also has al these promises and talks a good game, but the hype will die after so long and you'll be disappointed"

Oh well, that's that then.
We're all doomed

well said Neil, he takes notice what an Oldham fan says, it says it all really.
-
I too questioned the potential signing of Croft due to the amount of right sided midfielders we already have, however what I do know is that I know nothing...there are people employed to look after the stuff that I know nothing about...which is a lot!

I never said we were doomed either! Just stating what a football fan from the only other team he has managed at had to say about him.
Although, a few Oldham fnas did say Croft would work his cock off, week-in, week-out. We're not doomed after all!

Aye they were dead right about Furman and Wellens eh.
-
That is exactly why I take everything Oldham and believe the opposite. I want their fans to say an upcoming signing from them is shit because it means he's actually excellent.
Some really daft people on this forum at times, I swear some want us to fail. They're underwhelmed by Dickov coming in so cannot wait to find any excuse to slate him. The man has been in charge for 2 weeks, it isn't even pre-season yet and already he is being written off. Just like we always complain the media do to our club.
If we sign Lee Croft this week, does that mean we just won't bother signing a goalie? Does the statement 'there are some unbelievable players he wants to bring in' mean we have to exclusively sign massive international stars? The answer to both of those questions is a resounding no. Folk need to start thinking straight.
-
If this is the caliber of player we are attempting to sign then I am sorry but Dickov will slowly run the gains this club has made into the ground. What has happened to Dickov's and Flynn's infamously long lists? Have they gone missing? Has the pen gone missing as well?
#clubincrisis
For Chirst Sakes MF, just go away. Spend your time and resources on a better therapist, or on more effective medications. Stop destroying this forum.

So, judging by your train of thought, Oldham fans are polar opposite wrong with their opinions on Lee Croft? This meaning my doubting of Dickov signing this bloke is correct and he won't work his nuts off for us week-in, week-out!?

No but you also can't take what they say at face value.
We've seen what Croft can do and you don't get player of the season for nothing, yet you're doubting him and Dickov before we've even kicked a ball in anger.
Ridiculous. Give the man a f**king chance.

I'll believe him when I'm sat in him.

Like I said earlier, I'm NOT doubting Lee Croft's ability, I've seen what he can do at Man City, Derby County and three times this season for Oldham. I was getting at, why have we signed a RM/RW, when we have David Cotterill and Copps, and Kyle Bennett if he's on his game!? I have never slated Dickov and I am willing to give him a chance, after all, he's still got two-and-a-half/three months to build and organise the team how he wants! Maybe to win a few doubters over, he should have made a 'keeper his first signing or even tied Tommy Spurr down to a new contract.
-
You know what?
Dickov has been in the job for two weeks, players are on breaks, Croft (it looks like) is ready for a move and if he's coming here good luck to the lad - he's always looked good when I've seen him play against us (as said earlier in the thread.) Everyone in the know has said that Dickov's contacts are good, he talks a good game, he was a good player in his day and all that palava - can we please just let him find his feet and get on with his new job before castigating him as the devil incarnate or the messiah!
How about we just see over the next coupla weeks or so see how things begin to pan out before jumping on any bandwagon?
Yeah in some eyes many of us were underwhelmed with his appointment. The Oldham fans are split on whether he was any good or not, they'll all (mostly) say Croft is a good player (as he was their player of the season,) Furman came to us and did a great job, people are salivating at the possible prospect of RW arriving back!
We can do feck all about anything (unless we're VSC - and then we can make a tiny bit of difference.)
JR knows what he's doing! If Dickov is the board's choice (and it would seem he was otherwise someone else would be in charge) and he thinks Lee Croft would be a good addition to the squad - who are we to argue at this early stage - christ, a ball hasn't even been pumped up in anger yet - nevermind kicked.
I (over the years) have disagreed with many appointments/signing the club have made, but in the end (certainly over recent years) the club continue to prove doubters wrong! This is bound to continue! They know the score! We (as much as we think do) generally do not!
Let sleeping dogs lie and see where we are as the season closes in on us!
-
Dear RoT
You said....
Dickov has no experience of managing a club with the expectations like ours. He's simply out of depth and already stringing half-truths the public ("I'll be working tonight" - well, where's the evidence Paul?)
Then followed it up with...
Pre-season is the single most important period for any club (especially a small championship club like ours). If we don't get the right players in now we basically mess up the whole season. Judging Dickov on results will then be pointless.
So...what are our expectations ??

Can't sign a keeper if the one we're after's not out of contract yet.. and for all we know we've been in talks with agents.
Just because you haven't heard doesn't mean it isn't happening, and we can only sign what's out there anyway.

I'd take it three. I think we'll find out tonight what Dickov's true intention's are for the season.
-
Tonight? You mean tomorrow night? :P
-
We tried to grow into it last time... but then Billy Sharp came along and we got all ambitous and over-reached.
It's not unique to Doncaster or it's supporters that standing still is often worse than going backwards. I still maintain that the worst thing for us was staying up in the Championship in the third season when we finished fourth bottom and had only 44 points. After the run we'd been on we really should have gone down and it was only due to there being some pretty poor teams below us that we stayed up. If we'd gone done we could have re-grouped (like this season) and maybe SOD would have been revitalised being a decent sized club and wage budget in L1 and none of the "experiment" would have been necessary. All if's, buts and maybe's but we need to take the lessons learnt from last time and not make the same ones again!
-
Rios, are you suggesting if we don't play very well and flirt with the bottom 3 all season we should just pack it in and start again in League 1 next season?

No matter where we finished, what league we went into,we would have still been unable to shed the financial burden of a massive injury list of contracted players on championship wages. We have only just managed to shed Martis and M.Woods.
-
Rios, are you suggesting if we don't play very well and flirt with the bottom 3 all season we should just pack it in and start again in League 1 next season?
That's one very negative way of interpreting it. The other is that if you're a small club (that's us for the delusional among us) it's better to be a yo-yo club than one that aims for fourth bottom in the higher division every season. Crowds die away if you're not winning and pick up if you are, regardless of which division you're in so after the novelty of being in the same division as some of the bigger clubs has worn off fans want to watch us winning regardless of who we're playing. I have no problem with us getting relegated as long as we're being run in a sustainable manner.
As for the wages, that's down to offering players inflated contracts to try and ward off the bigger championship clubs. The opposite strategy is to sell those players to the highest bidder and replace with players identified by a good scouting network. There are plenty out there and if you got £500k for Husband for example, you spend 1/3 of that on a replacement and use the surplus to sustain the club. As JR has shown this season as long as you get the right manager in place (Saunders in this instance) the drop down a division can be manageable and indeed successful. I would hope that this time we'd keep our heads and not let the wage bill spiral out of control.
-
I agree Rios, and I'm sure the lessons from last time are not lost on the club.
The big difference this time around is Gavin Baldwin. Gavin is infinitely more dynamic and forward thinking than the post's previous incumbent.

I would also imagine another key bonus this time is to actually get some income from the stadium. The sort of figures stated for the profit so far will surely go to benefiting the playing staff in some capacity. Though i'm not in the know so just speculating.
-
For me no team should just go in to a season to just survive,it's a very dangerous game to play, plus very negative, our club since John Ryan took over, has never been negative, having said that most of us in the end the minimum we Want, not expect is for us to stay up.
For me the season when we signed Billy Sharp we didn't over reach,we didn't do quite enough, for me that season Jason Shackell or Elliot Ward permanent, were the difference between us sneaking in to the play offs, instead of just dropping off near the end of the season, the experiment was the season we over reached, but it didn't work.
The team we've come up with,is spirited but limited,we need to add a touch of class here to give us an edge at this level, the spine of the team is pretty good but still needs a bit of attention,a good experienced number 1,a back up keeper who puts genuine pressure for the shirt on the number 1,hopefully Spurr stays, but if not find his replacement,we need a quick centre-half,a bit of creativity in midfield to help Cotterill,i'd like to see a holding midfielder with a bit of presence who can also pass a ball,Danny Powell at MK Dons is a great player, whether we could afford i'm not sure if he's out of contract or not,we do need a quicker striker who can finish up front, and if things go wrong a few options that can change a game on the bench.
For me we have a better chance this time of improving all aspects at the club, everything is being run better, more income from the stadium, and on the whole our fans while we like to dream, are not unrealistic in what we can do,it's going to be an interesting ride. :scarf:
-
Sammy, love it. You say that the spine of the team is good - and then go on to say that the whole of the spine of the team needs changing!
