Fully agree with you there. I knew it was going to be expensive, but not quite as expensive as I realised - 6€ a pint!!
Barcelona is also a great city, but if you want somewhere reasonably priced and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere, may I suggest Budapest - cracking city which is great for a weekend break
-
some other suggestions depending on budget and what you might want:
Maastricht
Verona
Krakow
Dublin
The Hague
Vienna (expensive but great!)
-
Prague. Drink away from the main streets and you'll hardly spend anything. The castle side of the river and parks are lovely.
-
Madrid. Like Barcelona only better. And cheaper!
-
Talinn's a good place to go. Not too expensive either.
-
Prague as long as you avoid the tourist bits, Budapest and Rome if you can afford it. All beltingly good cities. As Dutch says, Maastricht is pretty nice too. And it's off the tourist track. Mind you, it's obligatory to take your squash racquet with you and challenge Dutch to a game or two.....

I will also throw in Geneva - lovely city with great views overlooking the Lake, though a tad on the expensive side
-
Amsterdam.......but then it all depends on what you want from the break ;-)
-
Cheers all!! We're going for the usual, beer, food, sightseeing nothing too adventurous or expensive.... But I'm a tight arse
-
Eastern European cities are your best bet for cheapish all of that, I find.
-
Try Sofia. Cheap. Not bad. Or Bucharest. I love it there. Even when you're ripped off it's pretty cheap. Not pretty, pretty like Prague, or even Budapest, but interesting and quite fun.

Personally I love Moscow, not that it is friendly or even cheap (which it certainly isn't) but for the mystery of it all. Though Moscow is a more acquired taste.

Vilinius.
Ditto
Superb place to go .... Churches are incredible .... Old Town amazing
Svyturys Baltas was incredible so I had many of them to confirm that !
Fly Wizz from DSA and stay near Cathedral at Radisson right in the heart of the "action"

Budapest is not far off the ideal city. Beautiful setting. History in abundance. Catalogue of high-class, low-cost hookers on the hotel bed when I arrived. What more could a man ask for?
My left-field favourite is Ravenna. Small place, but more World Heritage sites than any other city in the world. 2000 years of history within a few miles. Caesar crossed the Rubicon just down the road. Roman Empire decamped there for a while before the Ostrogoths invaded. Then one of the greatest generals in history, Belisarius, re-invaded and set up the city as the capital of the Byzantine Empire. And then in the 1300s, it was home to Dante, the greatest author/poet of all time.
Not bad for a place smaller than Donny.
And it's only a few miles from decent beaches and nightlife down the Rimini lido.
Mind, the hookers are nowt to write home about.

Sevilla is a beautiful city. The moorish architecture is simply amazing. Close enough to Granada to visit the Alhambra too, which is without doubt one of the most spectacular places I've ever visited.
If you can make it for Feria in April, all the better!

Go skiing for the weekend Passo Del Tonale is beautiful in Italy

Ok Billy. I'll tell you a little story about Sofia - and hookers. :)
About 4 years back I went skiing in Bulgaria. Got a bus out of Sofia heading towards the distant mountains. There was (is?) a half built ring road around the city. Traffic was moving but not too fast. And along long stretches of the roadworks there were tyres - on fire. Loads of 'em. And it didn't take long to work out why. It was chuffing freezing. And the poor girls standing there, by the side of the road, 90% naked needed at least something to warm them up. My eyes were out on sticks. Some of 'em were bloody gorgeous. If I hadn't had Alex with me.........
Cheers

You could come to Christchurch as far as the city goes you can see the gaps were the buildings used to be. On the plus side it is the football season i can take you to a local game

I think the clue was in the "missing buildings"
-
Phtt.
I could go to Mexborough to see gaps where buildings used to be and save misen 1200 quid on the air ticket.
-
I went to Krakow for a short break in March and would definitely recommend it

Cologne is a lovely place. Great cathedral with loads of steps to the top to walk off the Hangover and then great views. Kolsh beer only brewed in the city.
Oh and with it being a German city all the strip clubs and brothels are handily clearly marked on every map from Tourist information. Saves aimless wandering late at night.

I recently travelled by bus from Sofia to Vidin about 3hrs travelling, and in every layby there were hookers and you were right they were all gorgious looking.
-
I went to Poland once. A mate asked me if I was going to Krakow. I said no, I'm planning to get a hooker.
-
Mental note..... I must go back to Sofia. On my own!
They were exceptional examples of the breed weren't they 1951?!
