Anyone know owt about this kid? Where does he play? Can't be worse than Harper
P.S its not a rumour
-
This has gotta be some kind of joke FFs.
-
This is so embarrassing.
-
Are we this desperate for publicity?
-

-
Football wise - pretty embarrassing
PR wise (profile (UK and possibly abroad), shirt sales etc.) - could prove to be a serious money spinner
-
Iv just been sick in my mouth!
-
If he is a goalkeeper, he is already better than Gary Woods.
-
It's to make money and bring awareness to a local charity, so I really don't see the problem. It's not like he's making the first team!
-
I don't get the signing - seriously what's the point in this? Will he be added to squad numbers etc...
-
He's number 28 btw
And cheers drfc we are once again a laughing stock
-
Its all well and good saying it will boost shirt sales but at the moment we have no shirts to sell
-
He's having number 28, apparently. It's for a good cause, and that's - y'know - a good thing.
Nothing to see here, etc...
-
Very clever PR. One of the members of One Direction, potential shirt sales will go through the roof. Massive money spinner for the club me thinks.
-
He's number 28 btw
And cheers drfc we are once again a laughing stock
Who's laughing?
I don't give two hoots about this, but can't see it doing any harm?
-
Bluebell Wood ... . clever Marketing and shows Louis has determined to use his fame for a worthy cause.
-
He's number 28 btw

Who's laughing?
I don't give two hoots about this, but can't see it doing any harm?
Here we go..
-
What's your problem?
Donnybax was saying we're a laughing stock for registering a celebrity in order to help raise money for charity. I'm indifferent to this generally but don't see it as a bad thing, but can't understand how it makes us a laughing stock?
-
Great idea, fully behind it.
Atrocious timing.
-
Are some of you people real?. What's the problem with signing a high profile local celebrity and making use of his status to promote a loacal childrens charity in Bluebell Wood Childrens Hospice.
Do you honestly think this signing was made with the proviso that Louis plays first team football?
It's an honourary signing that will raise the profile of the club and promote better public awareness, and also raise much needed cash for a cause very close to the Rovers.
How can anyone think that this is an embarrassment, the publicity alone is worth it's weight in gold to the club.
He's taking JR's squad number 28. If he gets any game time at all, I can only see it being for local charity games. Good on yer Louis. Just my opinion of course, and I don't have evidence to back any of the above opinions.
-
His charity match not long back brought in over 12,000 fans didn't it? Now a game for the reserves at the keepmoat after live game just been on sky that he could feature in could sell out the ground for what would be a 7k usual attendance. If that all makes sense?
End of the day just to raise awearness of blue bell wood, and also makes doncaster more appealing to a wider range of fans if they have a hint Louie might be there!
-
Who's laughing you ask? The football world. We are a football club.
-
Are they? Really?
It's for charity FFS... Is that more laughable than Donny Dog? :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:
-
Highly embarrassing but a masterstroke in public relations. Donny fans run to the thousands, One Direction fans run to millions of impressionable youngsters, some of who will want a piece of Donny because of endorsement. Charity aside, let's not forget the lad is a Doncaster Rovers supporter and he will see this as an opportunity to make money for the club.
-
Just to confirm to fans that Louis will play 1 game for the development squad. This game will take place at the Keepmoat Stadium to help raise funds and awareness for Bluebell Wood, the club's official charity partner and a charity Louis is a patron of.
-
Just to confirm to fans that Louis will play 1 game for the development squad. This game will take place at the Keepmoat Stadium to help raise funds and awareness for Bluebell Wood, the club's official charity partner and a charity Louis is a patron of.
And a great cause it is. Well done to the club and well done to Louis.
-
Its a great gesture from Louis and the club for a local charity.
I understand the comments about the timing, as some supporters are a little concerned over real first team signings, but this has been planned for a while now to coincide with the FL92 event
Edit : rewritten because what I originally put made no sense at all
-

And then that's it? He's gone?
I'm not for or against this idea, I just can't be arsed to think about it.
-
Hmmm laughing stock for supporting a charity, cause were a football club
Suppose the world was laughing at Barcelona for supporting unicef for all those yrs
-
He has signed a one year deal on non-contract terms. He is personally making no money at all from this arrangement.
Can we also add that Real Madrid approached him regarding a similar idea and he rejected it because he wanted to do it for his local charity and hometown club.
-
Personally twitter is alive with idiots who do not know the background as mentioned above by SLO. This is great PR and will bring revenue into a local charity that both DRFC and Louis support. The whole knows about Bluebell Wood and DRFC. Well done
-
DRFC are trending on Twitter and reaching audiences worldwide as we get ready to start in the Championship again; incredible publicity - and redeems One Direction in the sense of it being for charity, and the lad's done it for his hometown team rather than doing what most celebrities do and follow the money.
All good clean harmless fun; opposing fans needed decent fodder anyway since the last good chant from that end was the opening game at Keepmoat Stadium against Huddersfield Town: "You've only come for the t-shirts!"
Bring it on, we've nothing to be ashamed of here. Keep smiling!
-
Think it's a good idea myself, but the timing of it makes it feel like a real kick in the teeth. If this had happened 3-4 weeks ago I don't think anyone would have a problem with it really, it's just 48 hours before the start of the season when we can barely fill a bench and one of our best players is on the verge of leaving, we're desperate for signings, then this happens. I can see why people are annoyed myself.
-
I don't see the timing as an issue. This is completely separate from the rest of the squad building and the real football side of things.
-

Credit to the lad.
Bring on Blackpool anyway!
-
Just think of all the little girls running round all over the world in the £50 rovers shirt with Tomlinson 28 on back! Hopefully we get a few quid out of this!
-
Is this some sort of joke he plays for a local pub team like we started out but were no longer that team!
we have gown enought to get better players than people who are in one direction :headbang: HOW DESPERATE ARE WE FOR PUBLICITY SERIOUSLY!? waste of money in my opinion
-

I'm sure that will be the idea. Think people are being a bit naive if they think it's all about charity. Rovers will be looking at making a few quid out of this.

We'll need it for our L1 promotion push 14/15 season
-
It's more of a publicity stunt in my opinion. I'm happy for bluebell wood who will get some much needed money. But from a football point of view, because we are a football club. And from a publicity stunt it's pathetic
-
This is so embarrassing.
But not as deeply embarassing as thinking JR was leading a takeover consortium though, eh?
-

Atrocious timing.
post of the day for me :-)
-
You can tell its tense on here - 4 months ago (maybe even two) we'd be quipping about it.
Can he get his bandmates to sing in the south stand?
Well at least he's better than Denis Souza/Lewis Guy/Mark Wilson
Will we get to play some friendlies abroad now?
Rovers are only going in "One Direction" after this signing...
-
We're getting all this publicity why isn't the clubs official twitter account posting links of where to buy tickets and merchandise? Wasting the opportunity
-
The only embarassing thing about this is the reaction of some of you guys...really.
-

What part of... 'Its costing us no money', do you not get? He's doing it for free.... to raise awareness for a charity.....which raises the profile of the club.... 1D fans buy the shirt..... everyone wins. Is it that difficult to get? Or am I being stupid? Jesus.
-

That post absolutely HAS to be a wind up.
-
Amen the only cringeworthy, embarrassing thing is people not being behind a charitable cause that's good for the football club as a whole, disappointing, but recently, not surprising either.
-
some people are unreal! Great publicity for the club, and for the charity. I recall asking my mum when i was about 13 for a port vale shirt because of Robbie Williams...major cringe as i type that....but its true! Good on Rovers..and good on louis!
-
I can't believe how everyone is getting so worked up about it
-
Some of the tweets about this make me want to cry
"Dear Doncaster rovers fans youll thank louis later hes good at football youll thank him later just watch :) @Louis_Tomlinson "
-
Whatever people think about it surely drfc should be announcing on twitter or Facebook where to buy shirts get them printed and where to buy tickets etc
-
Whatever people think about it surely drfc should be announcing on twitter or Facebook where to buy shirts get them printed and where to buy tickets etc
exactly my point further up. Why get this publicity if we aren't going to make to most of it?
-
Maybe We'll buy Billy with the extra money raised from shirt sales.
-

The tweets about Blackpool tickets and ordering shirts with names/numbers on the back have now started to appear.

You are Jamie Redknapp....
-
is it wrong of me to get a shirt with the number one on the back of it and the word direction above it?
-
also should he not be renaming his pop group every direction as our fans never seem to be going in one direction on any subject to do with the club
-
If you go on twitter literally the whole country is laughing
Only if you take Twitter seriously!
Tomorrow's chip paper - the crap on there today...
-
I've only read the official site and it mentions nothing about ties to any charity. It mentioned the bluebell wood game as a seperate venture.
That is why its a complete laughing stock.
What it should have said is:
Louis Tomlinson signs for Doncaster Rovers for the Charity Blue Bell wood. All Shirt sold will see 'X'% being given to the Charity.
But it doesnt, and in my eyes it says that "we are selling our soul in the hope of selling a few more shirts"
-
I actually don't care if other clubs fans are laughing at us. Great move by the club, both in terms of charity fund raising and also publicity for Rovers. If we sell a load of shirts with his name and number on the back it will bring in funds fir the club.
We have once again done something a bit different. I salute the club for having the bottle and foresight to go along with it. If its true that Real Madrid approached him to do something similar for them but he turned them down so he could support his local club and charity then fair play to him. If its good enough for Real Madrid its good enough for Rovers in my book!
-
I think Its a great idea and top draw PR
Some Of you lot still live in the caves

well said :that:
-
Well done young man thinking about local charity.shame on some of our young posters who think this type of gesture is a joke.most clubs support good causes.
-
There are different ways to go about supporting good causes though....
I am not against the idea, it is PR genius and there is nothing wrong with exploiting links to megastars, however, the timing couldn't be worse. Yes it is unlikely it was decided this morning, but this summer hasn't exactly been full of positive messages. To release a squad showing 13 players and then two days later announce that we have signed a pop star is quite frankly disappointing.
I am sure that with the money Thomlinson has, he could support the Hospice in any way he wanted....
-
Why didnt we do this 3 months ago, sell loads if shirts and buy Billy Sharp?
-
We wanted a man loved by men but we got a boy loved by girls.
-
any body moaning, have a look on news now Doncaster rovers. all positive coverage from all round the globe , is it only us that can moan about summat positive .
-
Have we actually got any shirts to sell yet?
-

Absolutely bang on. If your opinion differs from the above then you're wrong - it's as simple as that. Mods - can we PLEASE have an "I'm A Moaning bas**rd" section on this forum? Ta.

that is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen. If your opinion differs you're wrong? How's that work? It's someone's opinion?
-
Did we have all this moaning when J.R.signed for us and he actually played
-
Because, despite what the teachers tell you, opinions can be wrong. It's not a difficult concept to wrap your head around...
Hitler, for example, had lots of opinions about disabled people, Jews, black folks and homosexuals - all of his opinions on those topics/people were wrong. It's very simple.
-
That's very very different how can you compare that to hitler? FFS
-
What's that thing that says if you leave a thread running long enough Hitler/the Nazis will come up?
-
That's very very different how can you compare that to hitler? FFS
I was giving you an extreme (possibly the most extreme) example in order for you to understand the concept of opinions being wrong. You're confusing entitlement to an opinion with the ridiculous notion that all opinions are valid.
-
Well in a forum like this surely all opinions are valid? As nobody here is as extreme as hitler!
-
What's that thing that says if you leave a thread running long enough Hitler/the Nazis will come up?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin's_law
-
More or less, yes. I was half-joking, tbh. I respect everyone's opinions - even when they're wrong.
However, I don't believe that a bunch of whining gits complaining about a PR stunt that will raise money both club and a worthy cause have a valid opinion.
I mean, let's break it down...
The club haven't signed many players *sob*... So we can't/shouldn't raise money for a charity? Really? Sorry, you're wrong. Try again. Also, we haven't finished signing players yet.
It's a prick whose music I despise... So what? He's helping to raise money for a worthy cause and - no doubt - we'll raise money for us thanks to shirt sales. Oh, and kids - potential future fans - will come to the Keepmoat, possibly for the first time. Oh, and we're all over the media for doing something creative, fun and worthy... Again, fail. Try again.
He's gay. Go away, you nasty homophobic prick. Fail.
Other cwubs are warffing at us. Aw diddums. Also fail.
-
Yeah those things aren't right especially the homophobic stuff. Some people like moaning though
-
Indeed. I have been genuinely saddened to see some of that on Facebook. My point - if indeed I have one - is that the club do something really good (even with a mountain of other shit going on) and people still pick holes in it.
That's my real beef, tbh.
-
Genius piece of PR. And as others have mentioned the 1000's of shirts we will sell with Tomlinson 28 on the back to people who would otherwise have no interest in buying a Rovers shirt will be a massive boost to the club financially and in terms of publicity. We could be seeing Rovers shirts being worn all around the world on the back of this.
Well done Doncaster Rovers.
-
Also I think we should get a new song going "best club ever" to the tune of One Directions "best song ever"
:chair:
-
Think it's a great idea personally.
-
A happy coincidence that the best ever selling shirt was Beckham 28 Real Madrid ???
-
May I draw the attention of the nay-sayers to the following:
http://www.newsnow.co.uk/h/Sport/Football/Championship/Doncaster+Rovers?search=&type=&searchheadlines=
A full page and then some today. We've even been noticed in the USA- though they call us a "soccer" club. Yesterday, when we signed Turnbull, Khumalo and Forrester we barely filled a page.
Remember- no publicity is bad publicity, ladies & gents.
Anyway, didn't Port Vale make a fortune from shifting replica shirts after Robbie Williams wore one on stage? We could do the same.
-
A happy coincidence that the best ever selling shirt was Beckham 28 Real Madrid ???
Bloody hell, they must have had millions returned if it was 28 for Beckham on em.
Now, 23...
-
Can some people have the ability of being blind to acts of kindness. Shame on you as the Kids he is helping are those in most need.
-
Just to add- it is not that uncommon for football clubs to allow fans to buy a place in the squad- usually via an auction. The money then goes into the club funds. In this case the main beneficiary will be Bluebell Wood- though the club will benefit (IMO) from the publicity.
OK- it would maybe have been better PR if we could have announced a "proper" signing at the same time, but as RTR has pointed out the thing with Louis and Sky was probably planned some time ago. As we know, proper signings don't just happen when you want them to.
-
I think this is brilliant news in every possible light.
I am proud that rovers, and louis, are doing something to help a marvellous charity!!
Well done
-
even though i put a couple of posts on early on in a tongue and cheek way, i beleive this could work out brilliantly for bluebell wood and the rovers. think of how many people will now see the work bluebell do and will decide to donate due to the publicity.
For rovers i would be very very suprised if we dont get extra bums on seats especially the female variety hoping to catch a glimpse of him (some will bring their dads, mums , friends etc etc, more shirts will be bought with his name on by his fans and it has raised our clubs profile not only within the town but globally. I also think that he will also be used like the rest of our squad in terms of visiting DRI at xmas and potentially school visits should his schedule permit , just imagine if he gets our shirts on sale at his gigs we could sell more in berlin than we have sold in our own town.
The posibilities for marketing are endless for all parties. Personnaly i dont have much time for his music its not for me but fair play all his stardom is being put to a good charity cause from which will raise alot of cash for all concerned. For me both him and those who made this happen should actually be given a pat on the back not getting berated by people who dont see the bigger picture. How many times do we hear of popstars/footballers and others with fame and fortune of louis age doing bad things and going off the rails and being t**ts just because thry can, at least he is doing some real good with all he has.
-
Oy Dickov.............get Tomlinson on!!!!!!!!
-
I'd play him in goal the first half and striker in the second half, and create a knicker wetting screaming area just behind the goal in the south stand.
-

Great idea. Good cause, will be good commercially and the kid must be some keeper with all his experience at No.1.

Not sure if most of what I am about to put ahs been said before, but the onlyembarrassing thing about the story and situation is our fans OVER reaction and not looking at this in the true light in which its aimed.
Today Rovers have teamed up again (signed) a band member from one of the worlds biggest bands at the moment love them or not.
In doing so they have
* Given Rovers 3000+ extra followers on twitter
* Made DRFC a global talking point and the 7th most trended topic on twitter
* Guaranteed at least 1 sell out crowd this season and all the revenue it brings
* Upped the Shirt sales
and the most important thing... The much needed revenue and exposure to a local charity for Children who are not as lucky as most of the people spouting off on here and have the longevity of life. To aid in the support of the children and families that are needed. Its Brilliant
My Son was born with serious heart defects which required 2 heart saving operations (with more needed), a fight with swine flu and two fights with Pneumonia. So I know what impact charities like Bluebell Wood have for families in need. They are invaluable and to be little a singer or club in the way some have spoken on here is a disgrace.
Has this cost the club? NO.
Has it the potential to make hundreds of thousands for a charity in which the kids and families with benefit hugely? Yes
Full credit to DRFC, the board, PD, and Louis. I'm sure all the people that matter (The Kids) will appreciate every single penny.
I just hope the Bradford lad does it for the Heart surgery unit in Leeds.
-
Well done DRFC & Louis. It's raised the clubs profile, it will raise money for charity and no doubt for the club too. No serious football fan can take the piss and if us Rovers fans can't take a bit of banter about this then too bad, grow up. Working in Birmingham, I thought Brummies were the whingeing champions of England. Reading this forum of late is changing my opinion.
Happy Yorkshire Day!

Seconded.

The lad has tweeted "who's coming to a game?" And got 35,000 retweets. If 1% of them turn up that's a success!
-

I've got no time for any boy bands but any football fan laughing at this exposure is just jealous I'm afraid. Aren't they the biggest *cough* band in the world at the moment?

He has signed a one year deal on non-contract terms. He is personally making no money at all from this arrangement.
Can we also add that Real Madrid approached him regarding a similar idea and he rejected it because he wanted to do it for his local charity and hometown club.
i am absolutelty thrilled by this, what a grat bit of PR for the club, we are now noticed on the international media, internet and yes, i bet the tomlinson 28 shirts are flying out.
anyone who is honestly, and i mean honestly horrified by this needs to take a long hard look at themselves in the mirror, cancer is a horrible disease that still claims thousands of lives every year, this charity needs this support and we as HUMAN BEINGS and rovers fans should back this 100%, the only people laughing are kids and internet trolls.
love it, well dont Sean and the rovers Team.

Christ some of you miserable buggers have got your heads so far up your own arses you give yourselves a peck on the cheek.
Everything about this has to be good.
You are moaning for moanings sake.
Get a life you miserable b*****ds.
And no I don't like 1D either but the lad is from Donny, doing his bit for his local club and a very good cause.

Well said Wellred

A Miller's fan who I know text taking the pxxs, but when I said if the needs of dying children is laughing matter, laugh on. The reply I got was, SORRY.
-
I don't understand why other fans say we should be ashamed or embarrassed - of what exactly?

It is pretty pathetic our own fans are saying it, never mind other clubs fans.

I think I am like the majority of supporters on here. This is a good deal all round really, for us, Bluebell Wood and probably the las himself. Well done Rovers for pushing this through.
However, I do NOT want my view/enjoyment of home games spoilt in any way by loads of screaming brats or parents creating havoc because of language used by supporters.
Can we set aside some area of ground as a One Direction enclosure where they can all sit together and wet their knickers in unison? Ideally the crappy bits of the East Stand where no bugger ever sits.

NO. That's where I sit.
EDIT I suggest up in the North West top corner where the other kids sit.

Well, reading this thread I would say there is a lot to be ashamed of.. None of it being the signing of Louis Tomlinson..
Funnily enough there is more to life than football, every day families need hospices for their little ones, places that are terribly underfunded. This is a massive, huge chance for Rovers to do something wonderful yet some of you are wingeing like little girls.
You should be bloody proud that through Rovers and Tomlinson there is the chance to do something incredible for these children not act like the selfish sods some of you have shown yourselves to be.
Be thankful that you don't need to take your kids to a hospice and have a little respect for those that do and those who care enough to help.

The news has reached New Zealand and I'm getting stick at work already with I love Louis pictures all over my desk.

I would in Barnsley and a co-worker kept ringing me all day and playing 1D songs down the phone. It's all banter though, and they know it's all for a good cause. :aok:

Exciting news about the Tomlinson signing, it'll be 4-4-bloody-2 from now on!
Why are all these girlies are getting so excited though?

Can we have a Rovers Calender with Louis running the ball with a backdrop of a full south stand, It would get a nice wodge of dosh in and would look nice on my granddaughters bedroom wall.
there are only pictures of fairies up at the moment :rtid:
-
By the way I have been trying all sorts of things to get her to follow Rovers and this little enterprise has solved all of my problems.... For the price of a child's club shirt :rtid: :scarf:

Over 43,500 followers on Twitter... :woohoo:

I think DRFC , Bluebell and Louis's agent ought to get their heads together and approach a TV production company about making this into a 6 part mini series.
They could start from his signing on, to him playing his first match ,including training and visits to the hospice.
This would raise the profile of every concerned at no cost.
Massive opportunity. :)
