Title: Coast to Coast Sponsorship
Post by: RUPRECHT on August 08, 2013, 07:28:14 am
Morning All

I'm doing the Coast to Coast bike ride in Sept in aid of Help the Hospices.

Any donations would be very gratefully received, I have almost achieved my sponsorship target and anything over that will then go to my Cousins charity - The Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Please find my just giving page below and thanks in advance.

Cheers

Andy  :rtid:

The road route from Workington on the West coast, through Lake District and Yorkshire Dales, finishing in Whitby.

Good luck with that.

Both routes on Mountain Bikes

Last year I did Whitehaven-Sunderland in 3 days (138 miles)...........the misters C2C. The Lakes and Pennines. Whinlatter Hill, The Old Coach Rd, Hartside, Garrigill, Rookhope are just some of the climbs that I still wake up in a speckled sweat thinking about.

This year I did the Way of the Roses, Morecambe-Brid in 2 days (about 180 miles). A grueller in 2 days, but the most beautiful scenic thing I've done. A few stings in the tail in the Settle climb, Greenhow and even the Wolds and a breathtaking descent into Pately Bridge.

Highly recommend these 2 routes and can give you some good bike friendly stopover hotels

Did Way of the Roses 2 years ago, i agree cussy it was amazing. Took 3 days, i like to enjoy rather than simply endure my rides. Doing Coast & Castles, Newcastle to Edinburgh, next week, again over 3 days. Can't wait !!!

Nice one, let me know what it's like.

At the moment we are looking at Hadrians Wall next year. To my surprise it starts right down the coast near Morecambe and go's up to Carlisle then across and then down to I think Sth Shields. It's along one.

I'd highly recommend the Whitehaven-Sunderland one

One of the girls doing C&C has done it twice, once all in one go for charity, mental !!!
Will probably do it one day, there's a route from Cardiff through Brecon to Anglesey i quite fancy but i'd have to get a bit of training in for that, i rode in Brecon one afternoon it was evil !!!

Ditto, our gang have Hadrians Wall as the likely one at this moment.

Option 2 is the Wales top to bottom one, but that will be a long one. Like you say I think it takes the Brecons, but would miss Snowdonia (on the route we looked at)

Option 3 is Scotland c2c

Option 4 is Ireland c2c

What? It must have changed recently - done hadrians wall 3 times now ( trying to get quicker each time) and never got as far as Morecambe! It's wallsend in Newcastle (there's a sort of museum type thing at the start) to bowness on solway on the solway firth, where there is the 'finish or start' line, depending which way you go? Always done it wallsend to bowness so it ends nicely rather than in a total sh*thole! Lovely b&b in bowness and cracking pub about 50 yds from finish line.

Would recommend it though - great walks & views in middle part and have stayed in some great b&b's. I've  met some great people and some kn*bheads as well! Seem to remember its 78 miles along he path, but I reckon about 85 to take in the best pubs!

Never been to Morecambe though!

You're right Chief. I just know it's not the dotted border line I once thought Hadrians Wall was. I just knew it came to each coast line well into Englands lands and not on the borders ie Bowness on one side and Wallsend on the other (the name is a clue really).

Cheers for the update though, I'll be in touch next year if/when we do it. I thought it was over 200 miles though??

I can assure you it's far less than 200 miles - I've done it in 4 days and lived! As I say its meant to be 78 miles but a bit longer as I always take a detour or 2 to find lunch/pub or the b&b we're booked into!

 :

Oi, careful! Just to forewarn you, Morecambe makes Wallsend look like the Cotswolds. Furthermore, technically you haven't done the coast to coast as Wallsend is 5 miles from the sea- you need to depart/arrive from Tynemouth. So in the style of Brian Clough, on taking over at Leeds " All them coast to coast medals, throw em in the bin you got em by cheating,"  ;)

East to West is supposedly more difficult as you have more headwinds.

That's always the dilema for me, west to east usually gets you more favourable winds but the scenery works better the other way around.
I have heard of people doing it then turning round & going back lol.

True, 5 miles from the sea but the 'Hadrians Wall Footpath' starts at Wallsend (as stated by Cusworthrover - makes sense really!) and on the part from Wallsend to Byker it really is like the wild west! On that bit of the walk I've been sprayed with 'water' by kids on bikes (thats what i believe & hope it was!), walked past Glue sniffers who offered me a sniff, been attacked by a dog and was victim of an attempted mugging (scared him off with my camping knife which was conveniently placed in my rucksack!). Lovely place!

Having said that from Newcastle city centre onwards I haven't had any problems at all - far from it, pretty much everyone has been lovely! Would be tempted to start at the brewery just outside Newcastle next time (don't recall the name, but a lovely pint!).

I cycle along there about once a week, it takes you through Walker, David Roche country, which as you say is quite nasty. I've never had any problems on the bike but your stories of attempted muggings, burnt out cars etc are not uncommon from people doing the walk.

Sorry Jon, seen your name now and no offence meant! Just my experiences have tarnished it in my mind! Sure it's not as bad as it seemed to me, although, your description says it probably is!!  ;)

I know what its like. I was firmly tongue in cheek, that route down by Walker is infamous- no offence taken.

I did the Way of the Roses on road bike over two days last year. Morecambe to Brid stopping overnight in Ripon. Inglebrough, Bowes the first day , Ripon, York, Brid the second day.
Excellent ride and would like to do more variations.

Well this is what we've been looking at and it's far more than 78miles.

And this is the one I've been talking about - I think yours is the cycle way which goes further. The hadrians wall footpath for walkers is a fair bit shorter and covers the path of the original wall west to east except for a bit from Wallsend to the sea which is now under an estate and docks. The start and finish points are at each end and the path is fairly well signposted. And it's 84 not 78 miles, thought that seemed a bit short & it definitely felt more like 84!

Also I notice now you were talking about riding as opposed to walking so beg your pardon, we're at crossed purposes - I'll get my coat!!

Although the seat had shades of brown and blood stains by the time I got home.
