Title: Classic trainers
Post by: RobTheRover on August 12, 2013, 03:42:36 pm
Every year I treat myself to a pair or two of new trainers for my hols, and every year I try to get myself a pair of vintage Adidas ZX250s and fail.  I had a pair in the mid-80s, and wore them to the Rovers all the time (with the ubiquitous Farah trousers or Lee jeans with the inner hem seams split - Donny Dressers of the 80s, take note and nod approvingly).

For those who never knew the ZX250, these are the bad boys I had....

Absolute classics in every sense.

This year's search has proved just as fruitless as previous years, except I have stumbled upon what might rank as my ZX250-killers!!!!  Nike Pre-Montreal Racer.  Proper retro trainers and in virtually identical colours as the classic ZX250.

Ordered them online on Sunday, and they arrived today.  Lovely.

I've got a pair of Nike Eric Koston's, black with a luminous yellow Nike tick and they are ace. 60 odd quid over here and got them in America in January for £25. Love my Nike trainers, still wearing 2 pairs I got on my previous visit to America over 2 years ago.

That's them...best trainers I've ever had! For some reason they've got the Nike running Lunarlon sole on them so they are proper comfy too.

Sambas and gazelles for me
Title: Re: Classic trainers
Post by: DaveDRFC on August 12, 2013, 05:49:07 pm
I agree Sambas are cool but the big flappy tongue is a bit annoying. Also on every pair I've had the stripes have started falling off long before I would consider the lifespan of the shoe to be at an end! Had a pair of suede ones that had one stripe left and half the sole hanging off before I finally gave up and chucked them in the bin.

What about the Adidas Willem Bungert which were black with brown stripes or the Gerd Mullers which were black with black stripes.

Nice, Knockers, nice.  I had some Adidas Jeans in the mid 80s too, red suede with navy blue stripes.  Awesome trainers.

Diadora Papa Borgs anyone?

Oslo, NB are massive in Scandinavia arent they?  The trainer of choice amongst lads of a certain disposition, I understand.

You can't go wrong with navy Adidas Sambas. The tongue is large, but smart with jeans to t'footy, and not so bad with shorts. I've just bought a pair of the new style Sambas, normal sized tongue and at £57 a great buy, because they are very comfy and I know they'll last.

P.S. How do you add picture like you lot have above?

Find the image you want on the web, copy the URL, then paste it into the message but wrap it in {img} at the start and {/img} at the end.  (Swap the curly brackets for square ones though)

The adidas re-issues are alright. Stick a pin in a 1970s adidas catalogue and you'd pick a classic pair of sports shoes.

These are alright.

Never really got liked the Adi runners, my favourites from that period were these Nike waffle-sole

And the best tennis shoe I had were these Puma G Vilas

With special mention to the Nike Wimbledon

After that it all went a bit wrong as knockers led me astray and I had a few years of Converse, DMs, and Pony hi-tops.

My trainer of choice these days is the Adidas Spezial - available in loads of colours so you can make sure they match your jacket

I've not been wearing trainers much of late but I picked up a pair of  these for the summer.

Slim, minimal styling, classic Italian brand. I would've liked them very much back in the 1980s, if I'd known about them.

A classic never dies, and I always find myself going back to the trusted Converse sneakers!

Some div that was never involved in the casual culture will splash out for them thinking they are the dogs b*llocks.

They are fcuking orrible and way off the mark.

If they was just NB then worth a look at,as for sure they would not be 400 sheets

Not classics, yet.

I like these, no branding, no advanced features, just thick real hide and a handstitched sole. Between a trainer and a comfort shoe, they are a bit dear though, so perhaps not.

on the basis of this thread I looked for my favorite all time running trainers and couldn't believe it when I found Hi Tec  still made them, so I've ordered them   :)   I'm sure they are virtually no more expensive than I paid in 1980ish.
I used them for road running, then just as shoes for about 10 years altogether   Hope  they are as good as my memory thinks they are   and no I'm not starting running again

I remember there was a fad for Hi Tec Squash at our school for a while. I think it must've been a reaction against expensive adidas and nikes.

I can't find a pic of the old ones, the new flavour look alright actually.

Adidas Jeans are my all time favs from back in the day. Came in blue or red, but red was for the proper hardcore dressers.

They've re-released a few versions since that are similarish, but not quite the same.

Other things/ items that spring to mind from a similar era...

Nah, not for me Oslo, too nesh.

I think for me and a lot of my mates, we were all into football, and we saw the whole dressers thing as a cool Northern sub-culture. So we got into the clothes, wore the hair cuts and all that.

Now I'm older, I still like quality clothes but I have to do what I can for the money.

There was a bit of bravado but we weren't looking for anything so we never really had to deal with anything. I suppose we were quite young, mid teens. We were just, copying older lads who were into it. As we got older acid house came along and the vibe changed.

It was like a fashion thing, lots of kids at school were wearing a red and blue berghaus and slinging a red and blue head bag over their shoulder.

Yes they do still make some trainers in the UK but they're an American company.  Walsh are still British owned.

I thought Reebok were British

Started in Bolton in the nineteenth century. They were bought by adidas ten years ago and it's now headquartered in the United States, like most brands they manufacture in places like China. Its very sad that there is little link to the UK anymore, they've even stopped the sponsorship of Bolton Wanderers now. I used to like the little union jack incorporated into the Reebok logotype.

Walsh started out working for Reebok before branching out and setting up his own brand.

If I was forced to wear beach sandals again, I'd consider Adilettes because although they have the flipflop thing of always feeling like they falling off they don't have the toe divider thing  and have a much wider strap over instead.

Women don't even consider comfort when choosing footwear, thats why you see so many women carrying their shoes instead of wearing them

Much of women's clothing is designed solely with only consideration given to decoration or artistic form. Often it seems practicality is secondary.

Men's clothing is solidly rooted in military, work and sportswear. Practicality is everything or it should be.

Heat hear.  Women are there to look pretty for their gentlemen whilst gentlemen need to be functionally prepared to protect their women,  hence comfortable sports based products.

Or summat.
