Title: what's your car?
Post by: Bentley Bullet on August 16, 2013, 09:34:11 am
Discussing the most popular/common cars around at the moment. I reckon Vauxhall's will be up there.
I drive a Vauxhall zafira 1.9 cdti (150).
1 nil to Vauxhall!

2007 1.8 petrol Honda Civic. In red, because red is ace.

The wife has a 2009 1.4 turbo petrol Alfa Romeo Mito. Also in red.

The top 5 new cars by sales in the last year were supposedly Fiesta, Focus, Corsa, Astra, Golf, in that order.

I've owned 3 vauxhalls, a Cavalier which was a great car, an Astra which was ok and a Vectra which was that bad I kept it all of 8 months and left me with the opinion that I wouldn't have another Vauxhall given as their build quality is shocking. The engine management light was on more times than it was off on both the Astra and Vectra. Piss poor cars in my opinion.

Since then I've had 2 Mondeos and I wouldn't have anything else. I currently have a 1998 V6 estate which has nearly done 190000 miles and has gone through the last 2 MOT's with very little wrong with it. Absolutely bomb proof and like shit off a shovel if I need it to be. I will be gutted when she has to go.

Only 8 months? I used to think that was far too long to keep a car! I'm 30, passed my test just before I was 18 and I'm on my 12th car, mainly due to the fact of getting very bored of them very quickly when I was younger. I've kept 3 of my 12 cars for 2 years-ish so shows you how quickly I used to get through them! Full list is...

1989 1.3 Ford Escort
1991 1.6 Vauxhall Astra
1989 1.4 Rover 216 (Bought for the princely sum of £1 after my Astra was written off by a Rushden and Diamonds fan!)
1992 1.6 Ford Orion
1998 1.9 Diesel Peugeot 306
1998 2.0 Alfa Romeo 156
2001 2.2 Vauxhall Astra Bertone (the supposedly sporty 2 door coupe one)
1997 1.6 Vauxhall Astra (Bought off eBay to tide me over when the above started costing me too much in fuel)
2001 1.0 Vauxhall Corsa (Trying to be sensible with a tiny engined car. Didn't last long, most boring thing I have ever owned and wasn't worth the terror when trying to pull out a junction with the power of a Flymo)
2004 1.9 diesel Alfa Romeo 156 (My favourite car I've ever owned, had to get rid when I couldn't stop the exhaust smoking no matter what I tried)
2004 1.9 diesel Seat Ibiza (definitely shouldn't have got rid of this, never let me down, fairly quick and very economical. Just got the 2 year itch and stupidly chopped it in)

Then my current 2007 1.8 Honda Civic, which when I first got I didn't really like but it's finally growing on me. Love how big the boot is and the fact I can just chuck my bike in without messing around taking the wheels off (my bike, not the car), and it's also got a very good mix of power and economy, as well as quite distinctive styling. Should be fairly reliable (touch wood!) with it being Japanese as well, although the fact it was built in Swindon will probably mean it'll fall to bits long before the engine dies.

2006 - Vauxhall Corsa SXi - got rid after a year, engine light always on, worst car I have had....

2007 - Fiesta Zetec S - my favourite car out of all the ones I have owned, I had it coming up to 2 years when someone broke into my house, stole the car keys and was never to be seen again.

2009 - Fiesta Econetic - decided after the car stealing incident I should get something a little less desirable, so went for the green option rather than something sporty. Less than 2 years down the line I slammed it into a concrete wall at about 50mph and this happened

2011 - Fiesta Zetec S - decided that I was over my old one getting stolen and got another. Was having a mid life crisis when I ordered it so it is all kitted up, full leather interior and all the mod cons. I am bored of it now though, bored of being a car owner. Come next May my method of transport will be 2 wheels instead of 4.

I used hire cars between the ones being stolen/written off etc, and had a Corsa, Meriva and Zafira. All no where near as nice as Fords.

Can I claim to be the only person on the forum who has owned a car that has actually appeared on Top Gear? Not just that particular model of car, but THE actual car?

It depends which car it is as to whether it's something to be proud of. They seem to trash about 90% of whatever they have on!

I once had an Austin Maestro.

I once had a Austin Maxi that I taught the ex wife to drive in, she took her test in it and at the end the examiner genuinely said to her " if you can point this round town you can drive anything"  wiggle the gearstick and pick anything that feels like a gear.

Dodge Avenger 2.0CDI. Great car , Cheap as chips, drive with care 70 mpg, drive a bit hard 60 mpg, throttle back still over 40. Insurance cheap, Road tax more than manageable. had 3 years now . Only bad thing is Tyre size, they are meant for 4x4 so tad expensive.

I'm not a car expert so I don't know the ins and outs of em all but...

I started with my Dad's Left Hand Drive leyland DAF Sherpa minibus!
My own first car was a Vauxhall Nova (G plate)
Then a Ford Escort (E plate - given to me by my ex-girlfriend's Dad)
Followed by a Ford Sierra Cosworth thing (H Plate and very nice indeed) -but I didn't even know it was a Cosworth (told you I was no expert!)
After that I was in Australia for a year so primarily drove a Ute and a Camper Van (both were Holdens which I think is the Aus equivalent of Vauxhalls.)
Then a Seat Arosa (T Plate)
Then a Fiesta (which was a 54 plate)
After that was the top car I've driven - Toyota Celica 1.8 VVTI on an 03 plate - Top b*llocks Gorgeous motor - I want her back!
When I was out of work for a while I cashed in on the Celica and have since shared 2 Toyota Yaris' with Mrs4475.
We're looking at the moment at upsizing to a Toyota Verso, but I really want a Celica back or a Toyota GT86.

Very mixed bunch!

2L Estate version? thats the one I had 2 tone metallic silver and blue massive car with the back seats down,  the ex had it when we split up and within 3 months she wrapped it round the only tree in a car park.

mk5 VW Golf GTi DSG.

Love it to bits, so much fun, but getting nagged by the missus to swap for something more practical for our 1 year old (it's a 3 door). Considering a new GTD in five door, and couldn't live without the DSG gearbox.

I'm in a 13 plate BMW 320d SE Coupe.

Had a couple of 3 series saloons before but always fancied a coupe and finally got one even though it's not exactly practical with a two year old son!

Here's a rough run-down of my history:

H Reg Clio 1.4RT
V plate Golf 1.6 SR
Y plate BMW 318i
53 plate BMW 320d ES. I bloody loved that motor but crashed it into the allotments on Springwell Lane!
51 plate Jag X-Type 2.5 V6 Sport
3 Passatts (1x1.8 & 2x2.0 TDi),
Focus 1.8 TDi
56 plate Mazda 6 2.0 TS
A bloody awful 60 plate Astra!
59 plate Audi A3 1.8 TFSI

I've got an Austin Ambassador Y reg, Y reg, Y reg, don't keep asking me why Reg it just happens to be that year.

Have you ever been involved in an 'Incident' on the 'Snake Pass'?

OK. I poodle to and from work in an ancient Vauxhall Astra automatic... It was my Mum's. She gave it to me. I use to save the others....

I've driven an Alfa GTV for years and I still do. A nice upper class Fiat really - but nowhere near as much fun as some of the older Alfa's I've had over the years.

And I break the sound barrier from time to time in my Nissan 350Z. The Alfa is reasonably quick. This thing is is rocket powered in comparison....

I can't for the life of me understand why someone would spend the GDP of a Micronesian island on a car that has headlights that look like my eyes the morning after 17 pints of Alpine Ayingerbrau and a couple of Blue Bols.

Swapping the wife's Alfa Mito for the new Seat Leon tomorrow, looking forward to it, always nice to have something new! It's a 1.2 TSI SE, in red, amazing what they can do with such a small engine these days!
