Title: Nicknames.
Post by: Colin C No.3 on October 07, 2013, 05:05:46 pm
I can remember Alan Little being affectionately nicknamed 'The Animal' by Rovers fans when he played under Billy Bremner in the early 80's, due to his uncrompromising physical game & prescence in that midfield. Any others spring to mind?

Most embarrassing has to be 'Kiko' – what kind of name is that for a grown man? In Paul Dickovs post match after the Wednesday game you can hear him barely able to spit it out. Whats wrong with Fred?

He's not the only one says that Sam :) I say it. A lot. Dennis was an institution all by himself in my teenage years and early 20's. He could be bloody awful - especially on Boxing Days, but the man actually was a pretty decent keeper. And he had style. The only other one I remember with style, albeit different, was Kim Book. He had a weird way of standing, with one heel on the ground and the rest of the foot cocked in the air right on the edge of his penalty area.

But it's easy for Dennis.

Can't believe no-one's mentioned the one and only Clownshoes.

And for a while, Brian Deane was known as "Bomber". After one of the myriad dreadful performances in our 87-88 relegation season, the lugubrious Goldthorpe 50 year old who used to come to the matches with us muttered, "Bomber? He wants dropping out of a f**king aeroplane."

I think he plays for Bury, John "The Shop" Lewis.

Mark Duffy has to become "Duff-Man"

"Duff-Man is thrusting in the direction of the top corner!".  It'd be a good celebration too!

Joe Royle used to call Paul Dickov 'The Wasp' and 'The Pest' in his playing days.

Jimmy O'Connor was called 'Des' a few times.

Must admit, I've already given Duffy the nickname "Tintin" (after the Brum-based singer of 1980s fame, Stephen "Tintin" Duffy.) Not sure if anyone else has, though.
