Here's another one, those Rovers players who enjoyed banter with the crowd & were loved for it.
I remember Jamie Paterson always made me smile through the 'dark days' of The Conference. Everytime he was lectured or booked by the ref, his 'party piece' was to make a winding action behind the ref's back interspersed by the odd pat as if to acknowledge the admonishment, then returning to 'the winding up' much to the crowds delight.
Andy Rhodes (an excellent keeper for us in the mid-late 80's) was also a hit with the fans with his facial expressions & general interaction with us. A Donny lad too so you could always 'sense' that bond & the feeling of ' I'd be stood with you if I wasn't on the pitch'.
It seems a long time since we've seen that type of character. Perhaps todays game just doesn't 'breed 'em' like it used to.
A shame me thinks.

Sean parish .....but that was in the pub as he used to pop in quite often for a chin wag as he was digging in cantley.
Would only drink half pints and never pushed the boat out to Get out Of his tree,Also went back to his digs Well before chucking out time.
Came out with a good story When he was playing for rovers against what ever team kevin hurlock was playing for,could have Been fulham?
Parish went up for a corner and was attacking the ball mid air and type Of shouted ....arrghhhummp...as you do When you leave the ground.
He flew passed hurlock Won the header and it went wide Of the post.
Parish picked him sen up and trotted back into position,then hurlock came along side Of him and said
..Next time you come up for a corner and attack the ball and go...arrrgrummmphhh... I will dislocate Your Knees next time we tackle....
Parish said that he had been given Threats from many a player as it was the norm to pick young new players on the scene,but hurlock was the only player who sounded like he really meant and would do what he said.

Gary Brabin was sumo. Remember him getting booked for lifting his shirt! A top guy to boot, has many a good laugh with him in town.

Gary Brabin got bloody sent off at Walsall before the second half even started! he made the whole sodding crowd burst out laughing doing his sumo impression. . I've never been so angry with a referee as I was that afternoon. Useless berk. It was Sumo having a laugh, entertaining the crowd. The natives loved it as much as we did. I think we were winning at half time too - and of course we lost after that. It took weeks for me to calm down afterwards.

Wasn't it also Gary Brabin who had a player pulling his shirt so on being given the foul proptly took his shirt off and handed it to him.....?

Brabs was a top bloke on and off the field, have been out in his company for the odd glass or two, Graeme Jones even came out of his shell at times

Colin Douglas loved nothing more than a pint and a laugh with fans . Maybe he liked two pints and a laugh a bit more and three pints a bit more still.

I can remember when we signed James Meera from Watford I think...He came into my local pub and we got chatting..He was a really nice bloke..told me how Taylor had told him he was the best player at Watford but didn't fit into his system so was let go...He was one of the first players to tell me that diet was everything to a footballer and drinking was never to be taken out of moderation (your going to love Dougie I thought.lol) ...Went home thinking we had signed a good un......
Of course it was Donny Rovers when we didn't have a penny to scratch our arses with,so it should have been no surprise when I watched him play and took me about 5 minutes to work out he was utter garbage...And any hope I had left for him was extinguished a few hours later when I saw him in the kebab shop leathered...sigh....lol

Always a shame to spoil a good story, but Billy Whitehurst had gone from DRFC before James Meara arrived.
I seem to recall that Sammy Chung realised pretty quickly he'd signed a pup and wanted to drop Meara, but Uncle Ken thought Meara had potential, so he stayed in the team. And of course the fans were asking "why the hell does Chung keep picking that clown?"

yes you are right mixing him up with some other youngster I cannot recall now.

Seems to have done alright out of it,although how he is classed as a Watford legend is beyond me...lol
