Title: Can anyone answer these?
Post by: Chris Black come back on October 09, 2013, 07:31:40 pm
Three corkers from the vault to which I never had a straight answer at the time:

1. Exactly what happened on the trip to Spain I think which led to Steve Foster and Tim Ryan leaving the club. We can guess, but does anyone actually know for sure?

2. How much compensation did we get from Wolves for Dean Saunders? I remember it being mentioned by a VSC rep on here that it would come out in future. How about a rough guide: 0-100k, 100-200k, 200-300k?

3. Was Tomi Ameobi really a footballer?

Re- Ryan/ Foster/ Penney. I heard a lot of versions of the tale at the time so I'd be hard pushed to say which was the correct one. I'm pretty certain it involved (a) drink (b) a missed curfew- which was not a strict one by the way and (c) some fisticuffs, though unclear who struck whom.

Re- Compo for Saunders. No idea, but I doubt it was huge.

Re- Tomi Ameobi. No- he made Theo Streete look like Rio Ferdinand in comparison. Odd, because his older and younger brothers are decent enough footballers. Then again, I remember the three Smith brothers who played cricket for Warwickshire in the 1980s. The oldest and youngest both had good careers and came close to England selection at various times. The middle brother was hopeless. He was a grade-one c**t though!

1. Wasn't there also some problem with McIndoe on that trip as well, which ultimately led to him leaving the club. He didn't want to go - as he was frightened of flying - but they forced him to and then ridiculed him?

2. Enough to get them relegated and us to get Paul Dickov.

3. He was better than Michele de Piedi.

Ref Saunders,

It was  CEO Gavin who said "it will be shown in the end of year accounts" which, correct me if I am wrong Jenny, has not been done yet.
Which leads me to another question why do we buy players but the fee paid is undisclosed? Why the need for secrecy?

Year end accounts will be next year.

Undisclosed for tonnes of reasons.

Didn't both Foster and Ryan sign for Penney at Darlo not too long after they'd left us? Obviously it wasn't anything too serious if so.

Also recall Dave Mulligan being in a lot of hot water over his fondness for the sauce.

This is what always surprised me. Foster was our best defender and captain at the time. For him to leave it must have been major league serious yet he was back playing for Penney in a little over a year. Very odd.

Sounds like Tony and Rico at the Copacabana. Only wi'out the guns. And the showgirl. And your grammar is infinitely better than Manilow's

To protect spending power and competitiveness.

To protect the player so there is no pressure of a big fee.

Even thought i was gutted foster left.. FOR SCUNNY!!!

It did give me pleasure in singing "what do we do with a drunken foster to him" when beating scunny later that season, was also very nice of him to join in and wave his arms about leading us in chorus!

The second point made me laugh I can't remember any player other than Billy costing over a £1m, that wouldn't bother him, I know his fee was disclosed but Forrester and Duffy were not disclosed.
I did hear that the first offer for Duffy was £80,000 the final fee I never found out. I don't recalled prem clubs using the same expression on transfers. It creates the impression of brown paper envelopes but I am sure that's not the case.

At the time when I heard what'd gone off I thought they left because of something like not wanting to bring the club's name into disrepute to be honest (I say that after everything that's gone off in our past before that...), but God knows what the real reason is.
