Title: Rovers fans in London - Where do you go?
Post by: Emma on October 21, 2013, 07:48:03 pm
I've been living in London for 4 months now and Friday will be the first televised Rovers match since I moved here. Is there a particular pub where any London exiles go to watch the match? Surely gotta be better sitting with Rovers fans than sat by myself in the Elephant and Castle local!!

I've been here 4 year now and whenever Rovers have been on TV I've tended to watch them at my local boozers in Putney, Clapham or Balham. Claphams not too much of a stretch from E&C, would recommend either the Alex or Belle Vue (possibly slightly biased towards that one!) Id make sure you check ahead to see if they are showing it though, a few years back we were playing Leeds on a Friday and I thought I'd be fine to watch it in a Walkabout in Temple. It was only after quite a lot of pleading that they put me in some pokey back room (with my own bar) and one small tv! If you want to go into town I've always enjoyed watching football at Sports Bar near Trafalgar Square - very lively albeit a bit Americanised.

Em,

You have my sympathy living around the E&C it is bleak!

I think Streatham Dave and one or two others meet up at the Coal Hole somewhere around the city? fairly regularly. send him a PM. Jenny was also working in London she may be able to advise.

the coal hole always seems to get a regular mention o here and previously when rovers have been in london some supporters have chosen it as an appropriate meeting place pre match.

Em,
Just looked The Coal Hole PH up sounds excellent and is very close to the Savoy Hotel and Charing Cross Station in the Strand. Simple to get to even from South London.

I'm in the same boat and was wondering where to watch it myself.

I know Clapham a bit, aren't The Belle Vue and The Alex are a bit lively on a Friday night? So might not be the best place to watch it. The Alex is probably more sports centred of the two mind.

Think there's a couple of decent places in Oval that'll show it, can't remember the names at the moment though

Does the Coal Hole show sport? I didn't think it did, and again in the City on the Friday night may not be the best option.

Thanks for the info...it would be handy if the Coal Hole is showing the game as that would be the most convenient with working in Waterloo. Don't know how to find that information out as the website doesn't give much away, how annoying. There are a few pubs in the Waterloo area but again its knowing whether the match will be shown  :(

Yeah I'm not sure the coal hole shows it. There is a pub in Waterloo which has TVs opposite the station, I think it's called the Duke of York (it's definitely on York road).

Coal Hole doesn't show sport it would be a treat if it did though. However a few of us rovers fans have beers on the first Thursday of the month and drink there pre-match for london based away games. The more the merrier!!!

Coal Hole is first Thursday of the month meetup + pre London away games. It has no TV. I tend to get a pub near me in Streatham (Horse and groom) to put games on but I am happy to meet people in Elephant and Castle or Clapham as people have suggested. Happy to go with the flow as long as we know whatever pub is picked will show it. I'll check back here in a couple of days.

City road 1 or city 1? On moorgate. 2 mins from moorgate station. Sports bar loads and loads of Tvs. Can have your own private room downstairs if there are a few of you. Beer is ok too

Elephant and Castle was a last ditch attempt as there is a pub over the road called the Prince of Wales, but it isn't great. I'd be happy to go to Moorgate/Waterloo Area/Duke of York somewhere around that area if anyone else is heading that way?

Emma, Viva, Scooter and others pick a pub with a TV in and i'm there. Will come in colours so you know who I am. Emma as it's your thread I think it's up to you to decide where.

I usually go to the Famous Three Kings in West Kensington - they show pretty much every game being played.

I'm down this Friday staying with relatives coz I'm off to the NFL game on Sunday. Driving down Friday lunch and staying Brockley/Camberwell area. Not sure if I'll make it out but need to watch the game somewhere.

The Kensington pub sounds good but unfortunately I'm tied to zone one as I have to dash off to Kings Cross straight afterwards. I'm going to find out if the Duke of York as suggested earlier in waterloo will have the match on. If not then I will try the pub in moorgate. I work in the Waterloo area so there are plenty of back ups around there which I can try if that is a convenient place for anyone who is wanting to watch? I will post tomorrow evening once I have found out where is definitely showing the match (with sound! As I went to the Wellington in Waterloo to watch the F1 the other week and they weren't putting subtitles or the sound on so pretty pointless)

Forgot about The Famous Three Kings, that's the pub of choice for unattendable Wales games, confirming that they will show any game.

I'm likely to be stuck in work while late on Friday so Clapham is out for me. Will be watching in either Farringdon's Sports Bar & Grill or Bar Kick in Shoreditch depending on when I can get out. Both should have it on, but neither are likely to have the sound on for a game on a Friday night unfortunately.

With my lack of knowledge on London pubs, I think I will go to the Farringdon bar and grill which VivaRovers suggested. Just phoned them and they are definitely showing the game but there will be no sound, which I can put up with.

The only pub I know will have the match with sound is the Camel and the Artichoke behind Waterloo which is a nice little pub but out of the way for people who don't know the area.

Good luck with it, due to the fact that I have a monopoly pub crawl on Saturday and money's a bit tight until pay day I will be watching at my brother's house in Balham.

Hope you manage to convert a few people wherever you go!

Will try to make it over to Farringdon then. Shouldn't be a problem.
