At least his mob never raised the false expectations that they were going to put any significant money in.
"Discuss."
-
We didn't have many expectations then either.

Just had a thought, Standanista. I used to work at ICI Fibres in the 60's and a certain Bernie Boldry worked on the shop floor. I seem to recall that he was involved in the Doncaster and District Sunday League. Don't suppose you know if it was the same one?
-
No expectations then, all gone downhill since a certain benefactor stepped down after ten years of succes
-
Oh here we f**king go...
-
Nice bloke Bernie

Like he did two seasons ago?

Yes he did work at ICI and then he left and set up a compressed air company down the Greyfriars Road area
-
Bernie Boldry had the finest 'tache you ever did see, whether in the confines of Studio 54, a line-up of Starsky & Hutch extras, cottaging in Finchley Road, or at any other time.
Wasn't he a local solicitor or summat?
Any bugger got a photo of our facially-hirsute erstwhile chairman they can put up here?

Ah, many thanks JBR!
Greyfriars Road? That wouldn't be somewhere near the North Bridge, would it? I seem to recall going to St Peter's RC Primary School there in 1948...........4 years before my first ever Rovers match against Nottm Forest in 1952. Happy days :).

Thanks BST - judging by that pic, maybe Bernie wandered down Wheatley Hall Road from ICI and landed a job as test driver at Harvesters...
High time the Keepmoat had a "Bernie Boldry Stand sponsored by Gillette". Anybody second that?

Yes it was down near the old baths, I went for an interview there when I completed my apprenticeship at ICI, his company supplied and repaired pneumatic tools and compressed air related products. In the end I stayed at ICI until 1993 and never worked for Bernie but he was a nice bloke!

I wonder if anyone ever sent one of the young lads at work to his place for a bucket-load of the stuff?

Great stuff, JBR. Thanks!
I was at BNS/ICI from 1961-1967 before moving to Croda at Snaith, near Goole. I got to know Bernie through his involvement with local football. I was a referee on the Sunday League, and they wanted a Registration Secretary. I had a chat with him and other League officials re the job, but the interview was terminated when they found out out that we didn't have a 'phone at home! Not many people in Branton had a 'phone, to be honest!

Haha a bucket full of stuff, a long stand and a left handed screwdriver!!
My Dad worked at BNS and ICI in the 60's, most of the time in the staple area but he did a few other jobs in various areas. I didn't start until 1978 as an apprentice, really enjoyed it looking back, particularly the early years.
How long were you a referee as my ex-father in law was a ref. Also, reference referee's, I worked with a guy at ICI who was a ref and his brother was the Headmaster in the best film of all time.........KES ; ) That's my claim to fame!

I worked in the lab. at ICI testing nylon and chemicals and monitoring stuff like humidity, temperature, etc..
I took up refereeing in 1962, and carried on for the next 48 years or so! Never managed to ref. at FL level, but I did end up on the Conference in the 1980's. Never forget reffing matches such as Maltby Main v Denaby Utd, and the local derby between Woodlands Social Club and Highworth Youth. Bloody hell, talk about legalised violence on a football pitch!
-
I did a bit of contracting at Croda when I worked for Paragon Plastics, we thought that the canteen was brill as we got meal Allowances and always had beer money change. I was working late there and missed the Blackburn league cup match because of it. :(
I might have played in a match reoffend by you as I played in the Donny Sunday League between 66 and 73 . Happy days.

Did Alan Sowden work in the Labs then? Alvin was in charge when I used to control the RH values in the lab testing area and hopefully keep it within the tolerances set as I worked in Factory Services. Did you know Barry Speakman, he was a ref and my ex father in law?

Wow, idler, small world! I worked at Croda for 6 months from May - June 1967, in the Research Establishment in Snaith centre. The canteen in those days was the cricket pavilion at Cowick Hall, and we were driven there in the firm's minibus. Can't say that the food in those days was anything special, but it was cheap!
What team did you play for in '67?
Happy days indeed!

Yep, Alan worked in the labs at about that time. Physical Lab. I think. I believe that he was related to my boss, Walter Sowden, the Chem. Lab. manager.
Would that be Alvin Cayton? If so, he started a few months after me in 67/68, with a guy called Pete Coffin, sadly no longer alive. I think that the last time that I saw Alvin was in the mid 90's when we had a reunion in the club house. Terrific night!
I can remember doing RH's by having to push a clapped out trolley around the Staple and Beaming Areas (amongst others). Had to submit the results to Head of Factory Services, a Mr Jamsett, I believe. Crap job at the time!

Sorry JBR, can't say that I ever met Barry Speakman, but his name is vaguely familiar!
-
I played for Balby Rangers later becoming Balby Vine Rangers until doing my cruciates in September 1973.
That finished me for even running never mind football.
One lad who was very young to be a ref sits near me in the West stand. He's in a wheelchair now though.
My favourite ref was Bernard Shaw, you could always have a laugh with him, he was fair and always kept the game going.

We need Jr back ASAP to sort this utter mess out!
He was rarely here to sort the mess out anyway and much of what you see is of his making no doubt.
He spent money hand over fist that a) was not all his to spend and b) He didn't always seek permission to spend in the first place.
Yes he has a legacy of the McKay fiasco as well as much of the success we enjoyed over the last 10 years. The operative word being much not all of the success btw.
He is not the Messiah neither is he quite Judas when taking into account his disgraceful behaviour at Barnsley and his shady continuing involvement in the SC shenanigans.
Someone I once held in high regard has shattered that illusion sadly.
Ffs stop thinking that this man can come back in finance the purchase/loans of top players, sort out the 'none existent' mess that is the management of our club.etc .etc.
This Messianic mentality is getting on my nerves when it comes to the subject of John Ryan. It has become somewhat similar to the rats following the Pied Piper of Hamelin
Rant over.......awaiting writ.
Why is a lifelong fan behaving in such a way

Blimey small world or what, yes Alvin Cayton was the gaffer in the lab after Alan retired and Pete, did he live in Kirk Sandall on Elizabeth Avenue, tall guy with dark combed back hair? If that is the same guy they emigrated a few years ago, I think they went to live with or near their son in Spain. Alvin, haha he was a bit of a card, fussing around like a mother hen, nice fella though and always very cheerful!!
Can't remember Mr Jamsett, it was John Bailey and Henry Walters when I worked there............good times!!

Yes, top man Alvin!
The Pete that started with Alvin lived in Wheatley somewhere. He left Doncaster in about 1964 and moved down to the Hampshire area with his sister when his father died. I was best man at his wedding in 1969. Peter and Gloria eventually moved to Chandlers Ford, and sadly died about 11 years ago. A true gent, he was. I still keep in touch with Gloria and hope to see her in the next few weeks.
Alvin was one of a number of people who worked at BNS/ICI all their working lives. How about Dave Boothby, (now sadly no longer with us), Stan Threadgold, (ditto), Mike Smith and Dennis Jackson. I used to work with all these, in the 60's, in the Chem. Lab.

Fair enough! I can see that it was beginning to lose its relevance!
