Title: Govt. M1 Speed Limit Plan
Post by: Mike_F on January 06, 2014, 01:03:39 pm
I regularly use the M1 from J33 (M18 to J28 (Alfreton) on my journey to and from the office.  Look what those Kitsons at the Highways Agency wnat to do to my f**king commute: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-25619914

The complete set of utter bas**rds.

It'll put 3 minutes on your trip. I've got a mate with a little kid who lives at Kimberworth overlooking the M1. Air quality is f**king horrendous some days.

It's not that much of a price for you to pay.

It'll save you a few quid on fuel over a year too.

I do over 30k miles a year in my job and also used to live half a mile from the M60 so can see both sides but agree with BST, the air quality was dreadful where I lived.

I use the M62 stretch between the M18 and the M60 frequently and was aghast at them putting average speed cameras through there... but you know what it has improved things and whilst at rush hour the traffic isn't exactly pelting along it does move smoother than when it was a free for all and the Audi and BMW fleet drivers were still expecting to do 90 through the stretch at Leeds.

Not to mention the fact that nearly every day there is an accident North or South bound on the stretch between the Mansfield and Chesterfield junctions

It's the thin end of the wedge though. Ok, in rush hour traffic I barely get above 40mph on that stretch anyway but I do drive on it regularly at other times, cruising at 80. The pollution bit is a total red herring; it'll have a negligible effect at best. If they impose a 60mph limit on there without a fuss it'll spread across the motorway network. When you drive 35000 miles a year that soon adds up to a lot more hours behind the wheel.

And the motorway limit will be raised to 80? Or has this been scrapped?

I like how they do this up North because they don't have a pollution problem down South.

It'd be pointless down south though given most of the time you can't hit that speed.

Not the best idea in my view, but in reality it's not a lot of time lost anyway.
