The 2014 Winter Olympics, officially the XXII Olympic Winter Games, or the 22nd Winter Olympics, are scheduled to take place from 7 to 23 February 2014, in Sochi, Russia, with some events held in the resort town of Krasnaya Polyana.

98 events in 15 winter sport disciplines will be held. Both the Olympics and 2014 Winter Paralympics are being organized by the Sochi Organizing Committee (SOC). Sochi was selected as the host city in July 2007, during the 119th IOC Session held in Guatemala City. The Sochi Olympics will be the first Olympics in the Russian Federation since the breakup of the USSR in 1991. The USSR was the host nation for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow.
The events of the 2014 Winter Olympics will be held around two clusters of new venues; an Olympic Park was constructed in the Imeretinsky Valley on the coast of the Black Sea, with Fisht Olympic Stadium and the Games' indoor venues located within walking distance, and snow events will be held at Krasnaya Polyana
Twelve new competitions are: biathlon mixed relay, women's ski jumping, figure skating mixed team, luge mixed team, ski half-pipe (men’s and women’s), ski slopestyle (men’s and women’s), snowboard slopestyle (men’s and women’s) and snowboard parallel slalom (men’s and women’s).

Olympians who gain gold on 15th February will be rewarded gold medals with Chelyabinsk meteor fragments - it will become exactly a year after the pieces of the cosmic body fell into the Chebarkul Lake in the Ural Mountains in central Russia.

I think GB (not UK, DmC) has the best chance ever of our record medals haul. I read somewhere last week that the success of the Olympics in London 2 years ago led to increased funding for this Winter Olympics and we are now sending out the highest number of participants we've ever had. The full list of athletes going is available HERE (http://www.teamgb.com/athlete-search?field_games_term_tid=169&field_sport_term_tid=&name=&field_born_region_tid=All&field_lives_region_tid=All&field_winter_sports_tid=)
I'm looking forward to it.

GB (not UK, DmC)
They call it Team GB but it actually represents the UK (ie GB + NI).
If I was a Northern Irish athlete I wouldn't be right happy about that.

The US and China always seem to absolutely dominate. I don't expect that to change.
-
China haven't been great in the Winter Olympics.
Overall, its Norway, USA, Austria, Germany and the Soviet Union/Russia who have bossed it.
-
I modified the name in the poll. In my opinin USA, Austria and Germany will fight for the first place.

Of course, in Soviet Russia, Olympics dominate you, no?

Can someone make this topic stick? Until this competition is finished, then is nu more needed.
Thanks.

Austria or Switzerland will smash the men's downhill skiing. just google some videos of the hahnenkamm or lauberhorn ski races. Epic races by super fit athletes

Well we've just won our first ever medal on snow, a bronze in the Womens snowboard
-
Hmm, my country has only one bronze medal in all history at winter olympics. That medal was won in 1968 at Grenoble  So, to be honest, I don't think that Romania can win any medal at this edition. We are good at summer olympics, where our gymnastics team is the best in the world (not at this moment, but in history)

Got to say, I'm loving it so far. The Slopestyle events have been fantastic to watch.

Well we ended up in the top 20 so thats probably pretty decent considering we aren't really a winter sports nation ....nor a summer one for that matter

Finally, sports the Aussies aren't good at!

My country, Romania, didn't win any single medal  but this was expected
