Title: Bathroom extractor fan required
Post by: Filo on February 14, 2014, 01:23:02 am
I need an extractor fan installing in my bathroom, the bathroom is fully tiled and I don't want to spoil the tile work, so a core drilled hole is probably required, can anyone point me in the direction of a tradesman that could do this job?

If you don't want to spoil the tiles why not have one fitted into the ceiling ? Mine is as the 2 outside walls round the shower are tiled too. The steam is then directed out through a vent cut out above the ceiling line.

Just a thought

Never thought of that option, did you have someone fit yours?

Filo - We've had one put in the ceiling as well. There's now a duct running through our loft which exits out the back of the house, just below the bottom of the roof. What's nice about ours is that we had it put in where a downlight used to sit, so it was a fairly straightforward job electrics wise, and we got one with a downlight in it. Bit like this:

I'd give you the fella's name, but i'm down South so wouldn't be much use. Price wise, you're probably looking at half a days rate for a proper electrician, plus parts.

Be careful. I'm reliably informed that certain ceiling ones are not as effective as wall mounted ones at removing moisture. Check the rate of extraction before you commit. Also check if the fan carries on working after you turn the light off. Do you want it to just operate when the light is on. If you have an overrun it can be as long as 20 minutes every time you turn the light on. I have mine set up so that it only operates when the light is on.

I'm going better than a timer, a humidistat is the way forward according to my surveyor

We've got ours set on an adjustable timer. It's set to something like ten minutes which does the job.

When we moved in there was no extraction facility, and you could see where the previous owner had just painted over mould to get a quick sale. Since we've had the fan put in we've had no problems at all. It's well worth doing.

I like it. Makes a change for me to learn something off this forum instead of constantly dishing out expert advice.
