Title: Gravity
Post by: IC1967 on March 05, 2014, 05:33:35 pm
This film has won numerous awards including 7 Oscars. Those of you that haven't seen it are probably thinking it must be a great film. I've got news for you. It's crap.

OK, so the special effects are ground breaking and worth a look but only if you are watching in 3D. Other than that it is an instantly forgettable film. The plot is rubbish and there is too much of the schmaltzy over the top insincere American type of 'I love you so much' b*llocks for a British audience. Sandra Bullock made me want to puke when she was going on about her private life.

So do yourself a favour and give it a wide berth.

Thought it was garbage.
Loved Wolf of Wall Street though. Best film i've seen for a few years, but i'm biased because I love Scorsese.

Any films worth watching IC1967 ?
the better the films do at these sort of awards the worse they tend to be !

I thought it was awful too.

My favourite film of recent times is Prisoners. Although it left me emotionally unbalanced for a little while.

I had thought about watching the other award winner, Twelve Years A Slave but I understand it is a very grim watch. So maybe not.

The picture I enjoyed most in recent years is probably Django Unchained.

I'd agree that Wolf and Django are great films. One I've seen recently that is also a great film is Captain Phillips. One that I strongly recommend is Untouchable. It's a French subtitled film but is brilliant. The Sessions and Flight are also excellent.

I'd still go for Les Mis, even if it could have been much, much better than it was.

Which version did you watch first? 2D or 3D?

Strange question but I will indulge you. 3D. No way would I watch that film twice.

prisoners was gripping. What a film.

enjoyed American hustle too.

So Mick

How do you know how gripping it is in 2D?
Title: Re: Gravity
Post by: IC1967 on March 05, 2014, 08:33:50 pm
So let's get this right. You have watched this film twice and think it is gripping in 2D. I'm glad you enjoyed it. However I have to say I won't be waiting with baited breath for any of your film recommendations.
Title: Re: Gravity
Post by: BillyStubbsTears on March 05, 2014, 08:44:23 pm
Mick

Your ability to draw a logical conclusion from the facts at your disposal is as poor as ever.

I haven't seen the film. I was asking how YOU knew what it would be like in 2D.
Title: Re: Gravity
Post by: IC1967 on March 05, 2014, 08:51:52 pm
So you think a film that would not have won any awards had it not been made in 3D that has a very poor storyline might actually be gripping in 2D. You have a very strange way of looking at things.
Title: Re: Gravity
Post by: MrFrost on March 05, 2014, 09:04:19 pm
At the end of the day, 3D is a gimmick, give me a film with a good story and interesting characters any day over on screen tricks.

Having said that, took the lad to see the Lego Movie at the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Title: Re: Gravity
Post by: IC1967 on March 05, 2014, 09:10:17 pm
Trust me that film would never have won any awards if it wasn't for 3D.
Title: Re: Gravity
Post by: BillyStubbsTears on March 05, 2014, 09:18:58 pm
Mick. Is there a problem with your screen? I haven't given any opinion whatsoever on the merits of the film.

You have a curious way of reading both more AND less into what people say than the facts would suggest.

Ooh. Touchy.

I was genuinely interested in how you knew that the special effects were only worth seeing in 3D, unless you'd also seen the film in 2D.

Plenty of reviews I've seen say it is pretty spectacular even in 2D. But I assumed you must have seen both to come to a conclusion.
Title: Re: Gravity
Post by: River Don on March 05, 2014, 10:55:26 pm
The thing with 3D in movies is there can be a tendency to set up shots to make the most of the technique. Basically they want to throw things at the audience.

In Gravity you can see that happening quite a lot in the trailer and action sequences they tend to pull from the film. That's not to say the action sequences aren't spectacular in their own right.

I do think the whole 3D thing is a bit of a gimmick. In some movies it's used to make up for a poor storyline in others it's not really required and can go unnoticed.

The only film I thought it really integrated well and was a great success, was in The Life of Pi. Another good watch if you haven't seen it.

See there's always films you forget about. Dr Strangelove and From Dusk til Dawn. Both fantastic movies in different ways, I'm not sure either would make my top 5 but they would be near.

Generally my favourite films are from before the 90s, I do think the golden era of British cinema was the 60s and American cinema the 70s. That's not me looking back fondly on my youth, I'd be choosing films from the 80s and early 90s if that were the case.

The Lego Movie all the way.. :)

We saw it in 3D and it was Awesome..lol..

give me a good animation any day. I don't like heavy, worthy films or films that leave me feeling depressed. life can do that I don't need to have it as entertainment too..
Title: Re: Gravity
Post by: MrFrost on March 06, 2014, 02:04:30 pm
Too many remakes doing the rounds these days.
You'd never get an original trilogy that's not remade or based on a book any more. For example, Back to The Future or Indiana Jones.
Title: Re: Gravity
Post by: IDM on March 06, 2014, 02:31:11 pm
Top 5?  I dunno, but I have a clear top 3:

The Good the Bad and the Ugly,
Life of Brian
Brief Encounter

All completely different!

I don't like 3D movies, it is like watching several 2D films in layers, rather than solid 3D.  Plus it gives me a headache like motion sickness.

I don't like how film makers shoot scenes that will supposedly look better in 3D - in 2D they are easy to spot yet do nothing for the film, in fact IMHO they detract from it.

A Short Film about Killing

Responsible for the finest line in film comedy in The Parole Officer.

Steve Coogan, brainy, nerdy parole officer trying to stall for time after the while talking to Jon Henshaw's hard man

Henshaw:"What's on the video?"

Coogan: "It's A Short Film about Killing by Krzysztof Kieślowsk. It's a simple story about a man who kills someone in the heat of the moment and it then follows the whole legal process culminating in the man's conviction and state execution, which is just a futile as the murder. And that's the point really. That killing is wrong."

Henshaw: "I've seen it. It's shit."

Too many and all for varying reasons or themes

The Shining is well up there though

For an old classic, The Third Man is awesome as is Wizard of Oz.

Lord of the rings are ace, so is Up

Exorcist

Django in recent years

I could go on and on

Thought Gravity was excellent myself. Properly gripping, really well-made despite having a really thin plot. The fact it won 7 Oscars despite being as far from Oscar-bait as it's possible to get speaks volumes to its quality in my mind. Really enjoyed all the Oscar nominations I've seen this year actually, Dallas Buyers' Club is probably my personal favourite, although I haven't seen 12 Years A Slave even though everyone's talking about it.

I was to tempted by this little homage to the Shining... It's the pattern from the carpet of the Overlook hotel.

It kind of shows up the pointlessness of the Oscars, that Amelie received nothing higher than a nomination for best foreign language film. The film itself, the cinematography, Tatou's performance and Yann Tiersen's soundtrack are all-time classics and will be remembered as such in 100 years time.

See, how do you 'rate' a good film?

I watched the Usual Suspects, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and Good Will Hunting for the first time the other week, I'd heard they were 'absolutley fantastic' films, don't get me wrong, they were enjoyable films and I would recommend them to people who haven't seem them, but, they weren't as 'compelling' (as they say) as I thought they would be.

I'm wanting to watch films such as; The Shawshank Redemption, Good Morning Vietnam (to name a couple), as I have Netflix, again, I've heard they're 'absolutley fantastic' films, but are they really compelling!?

Anyway, as someone above has said "It's impossible to pick my favourite 5 films as it changes a lot", but some good films I have seen over the years that are in my head are:

Rat Race
Taking of Pelham 123
The Simpsons Movie  :P
Borat
Deja Vu
Derailed (starring Clive Owen & Jennifer Aniston)
Taken

I liked Gravity.  I thought it was very good, but I am a bit of a sci-fi nerd, hence my top five are.....

1) Star Wars Episode V : The Empire Strikes Back
2) Star Wars Episode IV : A New Hope
3) The Thing (The John Carpenter one, not the recent prequel of the same name (which is actually half decent)
4) Raiders of the Lost Ark
5) Jaws

Sit me down in front of any of those 5 and you wont hear a peep from me for 2 hours +
Title: Re: Gravity

Rush would have been good if I didn't drink a jug full of Pimms whilst watching it and having to dash off to the toilet every 2 seconds missing the good bits....

I don't think I could name a top 5 if I am honest, I am not a massive movie fan, I don't have the attention span to sit still and watch something, any film that requires concentration on the plot line is normally not for me.

Most of the films on this thread I have never seen, one of my old colleagues was going to write me a list of must see films so I could broaden my horizons beyond chick flicks but that never came about.

I might crack open my One Direction movie tonight.
Title: Re: Gravity
Post by: River Don on March 07, 2014, 11:05:26 am
Rob,

Many people, well nerdy types will tell you Star Wars isn't Sci Fi. It's a high fantasy story that happens to be set in outer space.

It has a lot more in common with the Lord of the Rings, dragon like creatures, magic (the force), goblin-like creatures than something like 2001, which is real Sci Fi imagining the impacts of plausible new technology and the first human encounter with alien intelligence.

In that respect Gravity isn't really Sci Fi either as it is set in a present-day, amongst technology that already exists.

Anyway, just sayin.

The other thing Star Wars owes a lot to is WWII adventure films.

For a start the empire is Nazi Germany. The officers of the death star, the ones Vader (doesn't he play for Schalke 04?) likes to strangle with magic wouldn't look out of place in any scene from Downfall. A bit of trivia, George Lucas says the Word Darth is a variation of Dark while the German word Vater means father.

The attack on the death star is the Damnbusters raid, and the threat of the death star is basically Heroes of Telemark. They actually built Ti Fighters and At Ats in Bavaria, if you look closely you can see the BMW badges.

Anyway, what ever Star Wars is, it isn't really Sci Fi.

Yep and it looked terrible apparently, it gave the studio a bit of a scare when he first showed it to them.

The Thing is a cracking Sci Fi film BTW. Well... Sci Fi Horror but the genres often crossover.

My five Sci Fi movies today...

2001 a Space Odyssey
Bladerunner
Alien
War of the Worlds (Spielbergs excellent reinvention)

I watched Trading Places last night. A very good comedy movie from back in 1983.

The interesting thing was in that film the character Clarence Beeks (the bad guy security man) uses the phrase 'I'll tear you a new ass hole'

I'll bet that was the first time it was uttered and it's common usage has grown ever since.

Interesting how it's meaning has changed. In 1983, it was literal, a very violent, degrading action. Then in football it started to mean beat someone easily and in the post above, it means it was very good.
